[Proposal] MGS Forum Tour

A couple of us started batting the idea of doing more get togethers for the forum members around the country while we were out in Cali last week. In 2013, we had two events and they were good starts, but didn't get the traction they could have. Well, I had a bit of time to kill during the flight home and did some thinking on the subject.  What follows is nothing more than an idea/proposal at the moment.  

 

MGS Forum Tour 2014

 

What Is It?

 

A 3-4 event Mini-Tour encompassing locations around the US to get MGS members out to play with and against each other in order to put names with avatars and further promote the community that MGS embodies.  

 

Since weather around the country tends to be a little iffy depending upon the season, we should pick 3-4 dates and then select the venues based upon the weather.   In addition, looking at the location concentrations of volume posters, we would want to disperse the events fairly east, central and west.

 

Tentatively, an early year event, in the March/April timeframe would be a good time for a south Texas event, or perhaps south/central florida.  A June/July event in the northwest (Vancouver) and then perhaps a Sept/Oct event in the East/Southeast. Perhaps in the South Carolina area.

 

I've got more ideas noted, but not much consolidated into anything detailed yet.  Thought I would put this out there to get the thoughts going first.

Great idea dru -- I know several MGS'ers who would love to have one here in Minnesota. Bunch of us got together last summer and had a ball!  Don't think the March/April date would work, tho...

 

And summer in Vancouver?  Yeah baby!!!

The only problem with Central I can see is timing/access.  It would be the ideal 4th event, but you'd almost have to target August, and finding an easy/cost effective destination is a bit tricky.  Any thoughts on good time/location?

Texas is very cheap to get to for a lot of folks, so that's a good place. I assume the same would be true for Minnesota.

 

I think before we plan this sort of thing, we really need to know where everyone who realistically would go is. Then we could find a central location. I'm guessing only a very small percentage of the forum would be able to attend due to budget or family/work.

 

Also, I'm all for a grand opening party in Saratoga if that winds up happening.

We will probably be having a Texas Open around the first of March and as much as I love the idea of having them all in Texas, how about my home course, $2 per hole,   I thing events in Missouri offer central driving.  A lot more folks can go when they do not have to spend $1000 for plane tickets, and rental cars etc.

Missouri sounds fair.

 

Zinger, barbajo, and hckymeyer, I could fly us down. Well, maybe three of us plus bags, to Missouri for probably what it would cost to fly commercially anyway. Plus, it would be waaaaay cooler.

Houston is also very cheap to fly to. Most other places are about $500 from Boston

Except there isn't a reasonably priced course anywhere near Vegas. I had to drive all the way to California (Prim Valley) to find a good course for a good price.

Yeah, I could imagine golf courses are expensive to maintain in the desert. Good point.

I missed this earlier. Actually Sulphur Springs wouldn't be a bad option. Flying to DFW is pretty cheap. $350 or so round trip from Boston, and that includes a checking in my golf bag.

I like Vegas.  We always go to Desert Rose - about 10 miles off strip.  Not a resort course. But good enough.  roughly $40.

The original Texas Open was planned for a resort not far from Dallas.  It was very reasonable. But Texas has many golf resorts.

 

I am not for Vegas.  Vegas is a place that it will become about Vegas not about golf.

 

It is considerably easier to ask the wife if I can go to Missouri for golf that Vegas for golf.

Tim and I have been talking about doing an event at the Running Y Ranch in Oregon in the first week of June or so.

Helps for us out west/northwest.

It's always good to know someone in the air force!  That'd be fun.  I travel a lot for work and would can schedule around MGS dates.  Have always loved golfin' in the rockies, and company HQ is in Rhode Island.  Based on last year's experience - best to see who wants to volunteer to organize and do the groundwork.  MPB worked extra hard to make the Vancouver Open happen, and the Texas Open I'm sure was a project, too.  I'm sure the MN contingent could work together to put on a show here!

I'm psyched on this! I'm really broke though. I will definitely be trying to make the March deal in Texas work out. I'd love to go someplace else too though.

I'm pretty sure I just used up all of my "leaving the wife at home with a newborn and 3yr old" days last week in Carlsbad.  Plus I have a buddy trip in July that I want to go on, but not sure if that will happen this year either with already leaving once.

 

I'd be down for just about anything in MN that would be a day trip though.  As for timing I wouldn't go any earlier than June after the past spring.

When I get on the wrong side of leverage,  I clean the house.  Makes my wife happier than anything I can buy her.  Don't ever remember getting a no asking that night while she is still under the trance. Lol
