Wish Me Luck for This Month! (Updated)

Well, my two students who work off campus are about to go on break, and I haven't been able to spend nearly the time with them I should. Fortunately they're pretty self-motivated and don't need nearly as much support as others I work with. It's given me the opportunity to focus on a couple other things...

First off, I have my Braille midterm this afternoon as soon as we get back to campus. Ten sentences to transcribe from text to Braille, a word list to transcribe, and ten sentences to read and identify errors in the brailling. I actually lolly enjoy this stuff haha! Cramming these last few hours before exam time has helped me keep my mind off something more important...

So my wife and I are waiting to hear back from our fertility specialists office on her blood test to see if we're pregnant or not. We have been trying on our own the last two years before January to start a family. Unfortunately, routine treatment from her doctor didn't help us out at all. We started seeing our specialist, who has guided us through what is now our second cycle of treatment with stronger meds. I will likely find out during my exam if my proctor is nice enough to field the text/call from my wife. If we aren't, I think we're going to try IUI, but I'm really hoping it comes out positive for us this time. It would mean so much to my wife to finally be pregnant, and I can't express enough what it would mean for me.

So basically, wish me some good luck/juju/karma or whatever! Hopefully the whole afternoon is a success. Thanks for reading guys!

good luck, and if it doesn't go your way then keep going. I'm so glad we kept going after considering stopping a few times.

As anyone else who's been through it on here will tell you it can be a very long and emotional journey, we were successful with drug treatment eventually but it was no fun to see my wife month after month injecting herself with this that and the other.

It was 6 years of treatment to have our little boy, we'd given up and were on a skiing holiday drinking plenty of wine and jumping off silly things (my wife is very brave....well foolhardy) and she suddenly said I think I need to go and get a test. In France, small mountain resort - I don't speak any French.

We'd love to have more but we now can't and have blown our savings on IVF. Not that I can think of a better thing to spend money on, I hope you don't have to go as far as IVF though.

Fingers and everything else crossed for you.

Rest in peace long sticks - I'll remember you

Thanks everyone for the good thoughts and prayers.

The midterm wasn't so bad, I feel I nailed two-thirds, and the other part I don't feel bad about either.

Unfortunately, the preg test came back negative. I knew as soon as my wife got in the car. My heart did just about everything... Stuck in my throat, fell to the floor, an of course went out to my wife. Lately we've seen so many friends and coworkers turn up pregnant, and I know how much it hurts her to not be able to experience that. I'm hoping this little girls weekend will help her cope, as the golf outing will for me. Looks like we'll be trying IUI later this month. Thankfully our specialist offers discounts for patients going past the second cycle.

Good luck bro... As for the treatments, good luck with that.  Two of my wife and I's good friends were going through treatments and when they stopped, we took them out and got them drunk.  6 weeks later she found out she was pregnant.  We had 4 or 5 friends that every time we took them out and they got drunk, they ended up pregnant.  LOL. Even happened to us with my almost 5 year old.  It'll happen when the time is right.  Good luck.

My wife and I went through the same thing. It took us 3 1/2 years to get pregnant the first time. Turns out all I had to do was help my brother put his lawn in and drink a lot of beer in the process. When I got home, I was feeling no pain and we had a bit of "fun". My oldest turns 21 on the 7th. My youngest will be 18 in May. Keep the faith........... it will happen for you.

I do have to say, I'm not sure how long a chance my wife will give treatment... Had this been us 5-8 years ago, I think she'd be able to be patient, but methinks her biological clock is ticking with all of her work related success. We have talked about adoption, though. My wife has albinism, and she would love to adopt a child with albinism from a country where they are persecuted against and abandoned, such as China.

I will throw this out although I'm sure you and your wife may have already considered it. Adoption is a good thing. Lots of great kids out there in the world in need of every day families.

My story is like the Westy family. We tried and tried. Long story short we went hiking, not in France, but in the hills outside of New Haven CT. She fell, they put a vest on her for the X-rays and we laughed. They also did a pregnancy test on her and when the results came back, we cried. Little did we know that our two adopted children were already born and God had a little late in life surprise waiting in the wings for us. So it's 4 for us and 7 grandchildren one of whom lives with us. Alex brings so much life and vitality to our household.

Hang in there, who knows what wonderful thing is waiting for you.

Thank you again, to everyone for your kind words, prayers, mojo, and especially anecdotal stories.  It does make me feel better knowing that the situation isn't specific to just us.  I don't mean that to say I'm glad others have gone through it, but I am more at ease not having this feeling of my wife and I being alone on a desert island.

I also keep trying to tell myself that "reproductive windows" have vastly changed in the last 20-40 years with average life expectancies and overall health having improved.  I just fear being that 40 year old "first time dad" thinking how I'll be past 60 before my child graduates from college.  Plus, I want to be physically able to teach this crazy game of golf to my kid(s).

Haha! I was thinking that same thing. My mom always told me and my wife "Look out for number one, or else everyone else will treat you like number two!" My wife and I work at the Tx School for the Blind, she's a teacher and has been turning heads with her excellent work ethic, involvement with advocacy groups, and ability to handle tough situations. I'm transitioning from having spent six years as a music teacher to now being a job coach on our campus while also being enrolled in a Teacher of the Visually Impaired certification program through Texas Tech, so I can be more like the little woman. Perhaps we'll have our one, then adopt a second!

  • 2 weeks later...

Good Morning MGSers!

Just thought I'd give everyone a heads up on the process my wife and I are going through.

So last month was a dud.  It seemed like things were promising given that the medications prescribed for my wife were really getting her body primed for successful fertilization.  I think, however, that the 2 day window to achieve conception was a bit of a mood killer when it came to actually making things happen. Everything felt forced, like a job.

Our specialist gave us the option of continuing with the same course as last month, or to move to another form of treatment.  We opted to go with intrauterine insemination (IUI) this month.  We are currently about 6 days into what appears to be a 10 day process.  We have had a visit already to check follicle growth after two days of meds and will have another this Thursday to check for further growth of the three main cells.  If all goes according to plan (and based on the last two months of my wife's physical response to treatment, it should) we will have a late night trigger shot on Thursday, followed by IUI on Saturday.

I've been trying to be the cheerleader my wife needs.  I'm doing my best to assuage her doubts and concerns.  We have a lot of support from coworkers, and thanks to you all, I feel the support in my non-work life.  Hopefully in the coming weeks we'll have good news.  We've done a little research and have found many cases where couples were successful with IUI and the medications we are using.  It seems that many started the process of IUI without any sort of help, which thankfully our doctor didn't agree with the practice of.  Keeping my fingers crossed!

Exciting time thanks for sharing it with us. BTW I'm 57 and raising one of my grand kids. It's invigorating. I already have a cut down club for him. Also have a 12 year old biological child. You will have no trouble at the young age of 40. It's the new 30 anyway. :)

Haha, sriracha will be a must, my kid's gonna grow up with the ability to beat the heat. I'm determined to teach myself to hit the draw with driver and fairways while keeping the fade in the irons.

  • 4 weeks later...

So and update for you guys....

This past Monday the good woman and I went for our post IUI appointment. Basically another blood test for the pregnancy hormone levels to give us an indicator. As Maury would say, "the results are in!"

And... WE ARE PREGNANT! HCG levels were above baseline to indicate early pregnancy last Monday, and they more than doubled by Wednesday on our follow up test. Our fertility specialists office will monitor the first 9 weeks of pregnancy, followed by our OB/GYN monitoring the rest of the way.

So what could possibly be the hangup in all of this, surely Catman is totally stoked by this wonderful news... And yes, of course I am. We go in Wednesday to find out HOW MANY of these pint sized human beings we've actually created. As with all fertility procedures, the chances for multiples are high due to the standard practice of attaining at least two mature follicles before fertilization. The wife has some family history of twins but we aren't sure yet what we'll be looking forward to.

TL;DR - We're pregnant!

Just wanted to share the happy news with all of you! Sorry to say that Hula is the first of you to know; we played Plum Creek in Kyle, TX yesterday, and I had to share the news with him. Glad to report we both had good rounds on an unfamiliar course. Think I'll have to play there again, especially since it's the course my alma mater has adopted as their home track.
