Just got notified that MyGolfSpy was featured in the newest Taylormade commercial.  Was not aware of this so I asked for the reader to send along which one it was.

Have to be honest, at first I thought he was pulling my leg, then I read the fine print:

Oh, I am willing to bet that every major golf OEM has a couple of active lurkers monitoring this and every major (yes, MGS is hitting major) golf community on the web.  MGS has a heavy equipment bias that makes up for it's relative size.    They may not be active participants, but they are lurking, and they know the tone and feel the community has for their products.

Why?

It helps shape the marketing message.  In many ways, communities like these are the proverbial Canary in a Coal Mine.  When a community that is avid about equipment and the game starts to show indicators of poisonous marketing, they know to change it before it becomes pervasive beyond these relatively insular worlds of early adopters, but it also gives them good early indicators of things that are working both technically and socially.

People love to accuse MGS of being in TM's pocket, but as the long timers here know, that is anything but true.  The cause of that perception is that TM has actively engaged and and shown no fear of letting the equipment compete on it's own merits.  Ping deserves credit here too.  Who doesn't? Titleist.  It may well be a lose/lose situation for them to compete in this stuff, but at some point, they risk it damaging the reputation of being the best when they are not competing. The question becomes, fear or elitism.  I think to this point, we accept elitist, but I suspect a certain amount of fear is involved.  It is hard to demand premium prices when public perception starts to view your product as just another competitor.  ( this is why Apple has never competed on price/performance benchmarks, they compete on harder to quantify 'ease of use'/'it just works' ).

I expect this trend to continue and in some ways accelerate as the average golfer gets more comfortable with communities like this, and let us be honest, writers like Dave, Tony and X (and Matt in the past) have built a content base that has made the companies take notice.  This forum community hasn't hurt either, but even more interesting would be to see how MGS and it's forum has helped the little guys with exposure.

That right there may well be more indicative of the power that MGS is coming to wield in the industry.

TaylorMade is not the only company to take notice.  I went to a demo day recently and can report that Wilson is using MyGolfSpy in their marketing.  They had a little fold-out portfolio with all their 2014 equipment, kind of like a pocket map.  Well, when I got down to the bags, what did I see?

Here is another!

Palm Desert, CA - PowerBilt's brand-new Air Force One DFX driver hasn't even hit the market yet, but it's already received some media love. In its Most Wanted Driver of 2014 article, esteemed golf media outlet MyGolfSpy rated the Air Force One DFX fifth among all new-for-2014 drivers.

The article - located online at

In summary, the website reviewer wrote: "Surprise, surprise, surprise (I'm not actually surprised), here's the PowerBilt Air Force One rounds out our top 5. The numbers were excellent among our lower swing speed players, and we think we probably could have done better at the higher swing speeds too. You won't find many companies who offer a better selection of stock shafts, and you won't find many heads that perform better either. Joke all you want about the Nitrogen, this one is legit."

The Air Force One DFX features Nitrogen N7 "Nitrogen Charged" technology, a newly patented method to reinforce the clubface without adding any weight. The forged titanium body comes with titanium cup face technology, as well as aerodynamic clubhead shaping. It's available in both the high MOI and Tour Series, in lofts of 8.5°, 9.5°, 10.5° and 12.5°. Standard shaft length is 45 ½". The club is offered in several leading shaft models from the top OEM shaft brands, so that golfers will achieve the optimum launch angle and spin rate for their unique swing. MSRP starts at $299.99, and there is an upcharge for some shaft models.

"We're flattered that people are already taking notice of how well our Air Force One DFX driver competes with the market's biggest names," says Ross Kvinge, President of PowerBilt. "There's no question in my mind that this driver has earned that credibility, as MyGolfSpy's testing proves."

"Esteemed", even! Folks, I don't know about the rest of you, but I am finding this really, really fun to watch unfold. Many around here have known that MGS is legit for years. It's exciting to see the site and staff start to get the recognition they deserve. I'm sure this is only the beginning.

Absolutely love this. I can tell you from the outside looking over the last year this website has been a breath of fresh air. Real numbers. Real opinions. No filler. I think #datacritic is the one word to summarize this website. Nothing matters besides the numbers.

I know it's completely changed the way I look at the game of golf, and I'm happy to see other companies are finally starting to recognize that!

I sent y'all a tweet on March 15th after I spit my beer out watching a golf tournament and seeing MYGOLFSPY in the SLDR commercial credits. I got rid of cable so I couldn't pause/rewind. I had to search for the commercial online to see if I needed to send a tweet or stop drinking. Good thing I was able to keep drinking...
