Myrtle Beach!

Krizar

Recommended Posts

We finally booked a week in Myrtle beach with the family in July. I'm hoping to get out for 2-3 rounds, and I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations for places to play there. We're staying at surfside beach - proximity is helpful, but we'll have cars there so a drive wouldn't be too bad especially if there's a course worth it.

Any hidden gems? Great bang for the buck? Also - how early should I be booking tee times?

Thanks in advance

John Daly's Wicked Stick is a fun, affordable course.

Founder's Club has tee to green waste bunkers along the side of each fairway.......also very affordable.

Its been years since I was in Myrtle Beach, but I loved playing both True Blue and Caledonia Golf and Fish Club.  I have no idea what the price might be, but both are Mike Strantz designs, good challenge, very scenic.

I have played about 15 different courses in Myrtle Beach and all of them were good.  True Blue and Caledonia are nice but a little pricey.  I do like Caledonia though.  Barefoot Resort has 4 courses; Love, Dye, Fazio and Norman.  I have played the Love and Fazio courses; they have had national amateur events there.  Kings North is a nice Arnold Palmer design; lots of sand!

Good luck and have fun.  Hope it doesn't rain; I was there in August and it rained every day!

I think World Tour was pretty reasonable as far as price is concerned.....

If you are staying in Surfside you will be right down the road from me. All the above mentioned courses are good. Caledonia and True Blue may be pricey though but both are great courses. Pawley's Plantation is a great course it will be about 30 minutes south of SSB but it is a great Nicklaus designed course. Right down the street from where you are staying is Indian Wells which is my home course and it must be good with the good weather lately they have been booked solid every day

I was just there earlier this month and played MBN West Course, Myrtlewood PineHills, Pawleys Plantation and Grande Dunes.

If you're looking for bang for your buck, check the first two. Pawleys was very nice, has an older style to it, and it's very difficult. The two holes where you hit out of basically the middle of the marsh to an island green are awesome! I guess it's more of a peninsula, but whatever.

But personally Grande Dunes is my favorite out of the ones I listed. It was absolutely gorgeous! Stunning views, beautiful club house and practice areas, fantastic design and it was in great shape. It is a premium course, but it's absolutely worth the money!

True Blue, Pawley's Plantation, Prestwick, MB National King's North, Tradition...  just a couple of the courses I have enjoyed. check out mbn.com for tee time ideas. Cannot vote for the J Daly course or Indian Wells as a destination -- if you are already there and want to get an extra 18 in sure those are good. Wouldn't drive across country though.

Have fun, though!! Wherever you end up.

Indian Wells is a fun track and the people are nice. A great "locals" track. Honestly though for someone from out of state coming in to do a vacation I might suggest another golf course with more flair.

A little follow up - it ended up being just my family that came down, and my parents met us here for a few days. So I only got out for one round. I ended up at blackmoor. It wasn't too far from our rental and the price was pretty fair.- $50

My wife joined me as my cart driver and we were really impressed from the time we pulled in. Staff was helpful and friendly, practice area was great (full range, chipping, bunker and putting) and the course was in good shape. The course itself is pretty challenging, tons of doglegs, a few blind shots to the green, and a really cool double fairway on 8. I'd highly recommend this course, but not blind. I was grouped with 3 players that played there several times, and it really helped.

Thanks everyone for the recommendations, I'll have to play those next time I come down.

Rather than Start a new thread, Ill just bump this one.

We are headed to MB in 2 weeks. I have a group of 14 for a 5 day trip , We are playing Blackmoor, Tradition, Long Bay, Pawley's Plantation, and Grand Dunes.

I have played Blackmoor and Tradition before. I love blackmoor, but agree it wasn't that fun the first time. Lots of blind shots.

What kind of games do you guys play when you go on trips like this?

Blackmoor is fun.  Did you notice the cemetery along side the par 5 #13 hole on the left in the edge of the woods? It is a pre-Civil War cemetery and is on the national registry.   I like the course because it is not so surrounded by homes.  It is sorta "back in the woods".

Tell us how you did on hole #13 at Pawley's and what yardage you played it from.  It is a par 3.   :)
