TaylorMade staffer Troy Matteson isn't exactly a household name, but if he has a solid showing at the Valero Texas Open in San Antonio he might become (for a little while anyway) the poster child of TaylorMade Golf.

You may not have noticed but several more versions of TaylorMade SLDR Mini Driver cleared the USGA in the last week or so. For those not keeping track we're now at Version 3 with approved lofts of 10.5, 12, 14, and 16 degrees. Clearly TaylorMade has some plans for this club.

What makes Matteson newsworthy (sort of) is his decision to pull his driver out of the bag this week, and replace it (and a fairway wood) with 2 of these new Mini things. You could almost call it a reverse Mickelson.

The plan is to use the 10.5° off the tee and the 12° off the deck.

While we're not certain what the practical application of the SLDR Mini is for the average golfer (forgiveness is a constant point of discussion around here), a few of us who play on the same tight, and relatively short home course think it could have some application for us.

We're still waiting for more info from TaylorMade on if/when this is coming to retail.
