Triggs Memorial GC

Played Triggs Memorial in Providence, RI recently and found it to be a real gem.  An old Donald Ross muni it still has the blood lines of the original layout and has been been restored to some extent too.  Although not as flawless as some Ross private courses I've been fortunate to play, the routing, fairways and rough are all challenges and very enjoyable to play.  Don't be fooled by the fairly wide fairways as you can get in trouble quickly in the fescue lined bunkers or the false fronts at the greens, as well as the rolling terrain that tricks your eye.  The greens seem to have their original shaping but lack a little on grass quality, although it's been a brutal winter around here.  Not much in the way of amenities.  The course is right in the middle of a residential area of the city of Providence which is kind of strange, but I understand the area was a farm in the early 1900's.  Great course to play and especially fun to walk and enjoy the layout, routing and large trees that line the course.  I'll  be playing there again very soon.

Played Triggs a couple of years ago in an Oil Heat Service Managers tourney. You nailed it - great Donald Ross design, with some awesome holes on the back 9 especially.

Donald Ross did know how to make a fun course, but I'm pretty sure he hated golfers. Some of his courses have holes that are easy par or triple depending on where you tee shot winds up.

If I'm in the area I'll check it out. My favorite Ross course so far is the George Wright course in Hyde Park, MA.
