I took a personal day yesterday for personal reasons (I had to attend to a legal matter for a man that I have custodial guardianship over). The net result was that I got to watch much of the tournament and now today I've begun my vacation that will include lots of golf - weather permitting. I have to say that I am very disappointed by today's coverage. I guess it's always a no win scenario but I started watching at 6 and did not see Justin Rose (the hottest player in the world) until 7 and never saw Martin Kaymer once. I should have switched to the European Tour coverage, I'm guessing I would have seen more of those players. So far in the afternoon wave I've yet to see Dustin Johnson and he's only 3 strokes off the lead - I have him in a pool that I'm involved in, along with Rose and Kaymer. What channel is broadcasting the Open Championship? Why ESPN of course! So I am trying to keep track of it via the The OPEN App on my iPad. At the moment, Rory has a string of 2 Birdies and is now -7. Sergio is thru 9 with -5; and Woods is thru 8 at Even Par. I am angry with Direct TV. I've always thought that it was crazy to reward such aberrant shout or even encourage hitting it into the stands. What a great move IMO. I was amazed by fowler's scrambling and Sergio had some real moments but in the end Rory hit it so long and straight and when he didn't chipped, pitched and putting like the champion he is. Following the precedent of Palmer and Nicklaus his last one will be at St Andrews. He hand the misfortune of playing at the same time as Phil and Tiger. That was my beef with the coverage Jondagcl. Camera work and shot tracker were awesome and much of the commentary was outstanding. They didn't show enough of the other players IMO. That was my complaint. Because of my vacation and the morning times I got to see lots of the golf. I also wish that the USGA would always hold the USOpen on the West Coast but I know that wouldn't make everyone else happy. THEN on the weekends, the afternoon show by ABC allowed a full recap of the day's activity. The course was in terrific shape. I liked the rough for the drop areas......don't make it easy for these guys. As always, Driver was key to a good round. Down the middle was sooooo important. Glad that Fowler & Garcia gave Rory a challenge on Sunday. I hear you, sometimes I wondered why more players weren't shown as well. I'm with you on the shot tracker, but especially on the commentary. Insightful, relevant and worthwhile would be the words that I would use to describe their commentary. I was pretty disappointed in the coverage. Apparently, Sergio is the slowest player ever. For 2 hours, we watched Rory and Rickie hit every shot. We watched Sergio hit every shot. But then we also watched Rory and Rickie walk to the next shot and wait. Then we would see Sergio hit. No one else was shown. DJ apparently walked around and watched Sergio because we never saw him hit but was in the back ground. I was just thinking that everyone else must be sucking it up when they has a cameo appearance by Adam Scott on 18 who shot a 32 or 33 on the back 9. They also had a shot of Darren Clarke walking up 18 but don't know if he actually played because they never showed that. I am glad Rory won. He, Rickie, and Sergio played great. It is just other than the final 3 no one else made the coverage. This is so true that it is ridiculous that anyone regards what they see on TV as news. I have a dear friend who's wife is the CEO of a somewhat major media outlet. She used to be the number three person at ABC. She's always reminding me that the news is entertainment. I would say that it's helpful entertainment but it is as BK says what they want you to see. I switched over to the European Tour's coverage of the Open a couple of times. There was a lot more golf being shown there but the commentary wasn't as insightful IMO.
