Kids and Golf

I'm starting this thread for those of us who work with kids in the game of golf in some way or another.

I coach golf at a small Parochial School in Stetersburg FL. The kids on our team are between 5th and 8th grade. We generally have between 4 and 10 kids participating in golf.

Our season runs from March through May. We spend the bulk of our practice time at a public facility that has a par 3 course adjacent to an 18 hole par 72 course. It's an ideal set up for the kids. How many of you are involved in kids golf in so,e way or another?

Srixon ZX5 MK II  5-GW - UST recoil Dart 65 R flex

Evon roll ER 5 32 inches

It's our offseason so auditioning candidates - looking for that right mix of low spin long, more spin around the greens - TBD

I volunteer each summer at my 9-hole practice course.  The pro puts on 5 kids clinics each summer; $35 for 3 days Tue-Thu 9am-noon.  Kids range from 5-13.  We normally have about 40 kids per clinic, but have had up to 70.  We break them up by age, not skill level because all of these kids are brand new to the game.  It's an introduction to golf and if they have an interest then the next step would be The First Tee, or other formal instruction.  We try to have no more than 6 kids per "instructor".  I use the term instructor rather loosely.  Except for our pro all of the rest of us are volunteers and not teachers by trade.

On Tue, the pro introduces them to the activities and the instructors and provides a safety briefing; believe me, they need the safety briefing reinforced each day!  Remember, they have weapons in their hands!  We have lots of clubs to use if they don't have their own, but surprisingly most kids do have a starter set. The groups by age are positioned at 3 stations:  driving range, chipping green and putting green; and they rotate from one to the other on the first two days.  On Thu each instructor takes a group out on the course and play as many holes as we can get in for the time allotted.  Younger kids start at the 100 yard markers; older kids at 150.

We have some kids that come to several clinics during the summer and some that come back each summer.  All are really good kids; well, except for Alex.  What a pain in the ____!

We don’t stop playing the game because we get old; we get old because we stop playing the game.”

I've been thinking about doing something around here but haven't worked up the courage to do it.

I work with my daughters when they want to, but other than that I have declined when asked to help out others' kids.

While I am an average golfer and understand most of the mechanics, I don't want to get into a situation where someone claims I told their kid something wrong.

Maybe I'm just paranoid, but it doesn't seem worth the hassle.

Just so you know I always direct the kids to the local pro who runs a great summer program for kids. I teach etiquette and the love of the game. @ Kenny I didn't realize my grandson was out your way.
