Swapped my Covert Tour 2.0 with a guy for a Tour Edge Exotics XCG7 with an X Flex Speeder shaft.  Delivered today and here is what I received.

box.jpg

A crushed box with no golf club inside.  The mail lady said it arrived to Owensboro like this and she already spoke to her supervisor about it.  I have no doubt she was telling the truth,  she is always very nice and I could tell she sincerely felt bad she had to deliver it.  Her supervisor said I need to file a claim on USPS but I'm pretty sure it's gonna end with me being out $250.  I think the guy only had the standard $50 insurance for priority mail so I'm gonna get screwed.  Needless to say,  I am a very pissed off individual this beautiful Saturday.

It was only insured for the stock $50.  Who is responsible for the insurance?  Should I have requested it or is the shipper responsible?

IMO it is the shippers responsibility to deliver the club as advertised. Until you take possession it's still their responsibility. Hopefully he makes it right with you.

I would agree but I'm not an attorney. Regardless it stinks.

I called the postal inspection to file a complaint and the lady basically told me it was pointless to file a complaint because nothing would be done about it since it was only insured for $50.  I always insure high dollar items but I will insure everything above $50 from now on.  I also told her it's "no wonder the postal service is going bankrupt" and she didn't have too much to say.  I will stick with UPS from now on,  Fed Ex has given me problems before as well.

ALWAYS fully insure USPS packages.  Their track rate of damage/lost is about 3% for me.  In other words...I have a problem with 1 out of every 33 packages.

Did you contact the seller? Also curious if it was a WRX transaction? If the guy isn't coming through post a story in the deal or no deal thread and he'll get fried pretty quick

I don't know what site you swapped the shaft on, but I'd ask him to at least cover half the loss.  Bottom line is: you did not receive the club.  eBay transactions, the seller is 100% responsible until item is delivered.

It was through Golf WRX.  I buy/sell/trade a lot through their classifieds.  So far,  the guy seems fairly concerned and responsive.  I messaged a moderator on the site and asked how the situation should be handled.  I am very fair,  don't want the guy to get screwed but don't think it's fair that I take total loss either.

It's the seller/trader's responsibility to ensure that the item gets to you safe in transit. He chose not to insure it, that's his problem. He needs to pony up the monies to cover it. Post a thread there in deal/no deal

He did the right thing and shipped my Nike driver back today.  I hate it for him because he was very easy to deal with,  just didn't insure.  I'll be honest,  I did not usually insure unless requested for items less than $300 but I will insure everything from now on.  Lesson learned,  I'm just glad he was a good guy and took responsibility.

The seller should offer you a full refund.  Its the seller's responsibility to ensure that your item arrives intact and is in the condition that they described it as being in.

All in all though, I much prefer shipping with USPS over shipping with anyone else, especially UPS.

Tough issue.   I've got about 4000 ebay transactions under my belt, 95% shipped with the Postal Service.   I've filed 1 insurance claim in 15 years.   I've also eaten, or split the loss with trading partners, about 3 or 4 times.  Last time was with a customer who got a well padded fragile item that his postman had intentionally crushed to squeeze into his mail slot.  I'd given him free shipping and it was destroyed, he said it wasn't my fault and I gave him a small discount on his next purchase.   Most customers are extremely reasonable.    The ones who are not are always newbies.

I don't think I'd agree with the premise that it is the seller's entire responsibility to get the item to the consumer.   The consumer can alter or improve the shipping method if he chooses, he can opt for free pick-up if he chooses, he can insist on insurance if he chooses.   The worst case scenario that unscrupulous buyers use is the ol' empty box trick.  They claim that the box arrived sealed and intact, but there was nothing in it.   This trick is the primary reason I won't sell to new ebayers.   This isn't what happened in your case, but it does happen.   I always ship with tracking and if the package shows as "delivered" (especially "delivered and signed for") then I'm not going to be sympathetic about further customer complaints about loss or damage.   Stolen off your porch is your problem.

It's hard to know when to insure or who should pay for insurance.   Anything over $200 I insure without asking the buyer.   Anything under $100 I do not because the generic $50 covers it and if it's a club, it can be sent back if damaged.   If I insure, I pad the shipping to cover it and tell the buyer I'm doing so.  I'm constantly amazed at how many customers do NOT want insurance.  They'll piss and moan about that extra $2 that they don't think is necessary.

I'll say this though, for a single club in a triangle tube, the USPS is fastest, cheapest and best.  For a full set of irons, FedexGround.   Packing and padding well really helps minimize shipping problems.

The guy shipped back the Nike driver last week and it was supposed to be here yesterday.  But,  it's been sitting in Dallas since Friday.  Hopefully it arrives without incident.  Got a $50 check in the mail from USPS yesterday.  Gonna paypal the guy the $50 plus the return postage for my Nike driver once it gets here.
