hckymeyer
I had two ideas for some future MGS Labs articles I thought would be interesting. Both around the golf ball 1. I'd love to see a test of New vs. Recycled vs. Refinished balls. See how distance and spin are affected in each case 2. Effects of cold weather on golf balls and if lower compression really makes a difference. BIG STU
That is a pretty good idea. I do know "supposedly" that they somehow test refurbed balls for OEM performance. markb
Both would be kinda hard to do without an iron byron, but I play all winter long down to about freezing. I'll volunteer for some cold ball testing as many of our local courses don't close. It could be done by keeping one set of balls warm and allowing the other set to cool to ambient temperature and then see what happens. I confess that when I play winter golf I heat the balls in a warm oven overnight, then keep them in my pockets full of hot pads all thru the round, changing balls every hole. I never let the little suckers cool down. And I play Wilson Duo's too. markb
I'd like to see a "True Distance by Loft" test. I'm so sick of reading threads where the "new" XYZ 7 iron goes much farther than the competition, then you read that the new 7 is 30.5 degrees as opposed to 33. How about we ignore the numbers stamped on the bottoms of clubs and just test lofts against each other? Some clubs may very well go longer with this kind of tests and we should really learn which go higher and are easier to hit at each loft. bag - SunMountain Synch with Ogio Synergy X4 cartdriver - Optiforce 440, Paderson Kevlar Green stiff 46.5"fwoods - Jetspeed, 3HL regularirons - Speedblades 3-8, 85g stiff steel, 2 upwedges - Scor 40, 45, 50, 54, 58putter - Ketsch 35" slight arc, SuperStroke 2.0 mid-slimball - ProV1x
wbealsd
Those are all good ideas! Not only are the numbers on irons "phonied up," but mfg's flex ratings for shafts are virtually meaningless. markb
I can't believe that article just came out! Now I'll have to think of another topic, because that one is answered. This confirms what I've been thinking of late: Most decent cappers only need modern GI shovels for their 4,5, 6 irons. It's the forgiveness factor that benefits us most with these clubs, not the jacked lofts. We all still need the precision and spin of the traditional irons at the short end, but if you want to narrow the gap differences to conform to your traditional set, get some GI trampolines at the high end and bend them a bit weak by varying degrees. Except for the + cap's, we probably should all be playing such combo sets. I'm glad he included the distinction of "distance overall when lofts are adjusted" and "distance by average when you include all the clunkers that you get more frequently with the traditional irons". When you do that, the modern GI shovels still kill because they save many more mishit shots than the traditional irons. bag - SunMountain Synch with Ogio Synergy X4 cartdriver - Optiforce 440, Paderson Kevlar Green stiff 46.5"fwoods - Jetspeed, 3HL regularirons - Speedblades 3-8, 85g stiff steel, 2 upwedges - Scor 40, 45, 50, 54, 58putter - Ketsch 35" slight arc, SuperStroke 2.0 mid-slimball - ProV1x
