Fittings are Great but are they "Comprehensive" enough?

Going to get a comprehensive retro fitting of my current gamers tomorrow.  Gonna hit the 915 next to my current R1 V2 and see what the numbers say.  Unlike some of the fittings I have had before,  this one should be very comprehensive and in depth.  I'm driving 3 hrs to Man O War Golf Center in Lexington in the morning,  which is a top 100 US fitting center.  They are going to review my current set up which I will suspect requires tweaking to the specs as well as different shafts for my irons.  I have had several fittings in the past,  but always left wondering a little if it was good enough,  did they cover all the bases?  At big box stores,  I have pretty much decided they only put you into what gives you good enough numbers to buy something.  That doesn't mean it's best.  The only "comprehensive fitting"  I have ever had was at the TMaG fitting center in Nashville after I won the MGS tour contest.  Although  the guy was very nice,  the only shaft I hit that day for the driver, 3 wood, and hybrid was the stock shaft.  He certainly tweaked lofts and flexes but who is to say another shaft might not be better and give me the best opportunity to play golf?  If they have the full inventory to choose from,  why not give it a shot?  I am hoping tomorrow is a different story,  I will post with my experience.  Anyone else feel this way?

Really on the TMag fitting? Mine was a totally different experience from yours. I don't believe I ever even had the stock shaft in a club that he gave me to hit. He also took the time to make an iron shaft recommendation for me after watching me hit some irons. I guess that goes to show that the fitter matters.

At any rate I do agree with you Matt, depending upon a person's budget a comprehensive fitting is most helpful. Given that we don't have equipment contracts that fitting could even include a brand recommendation. My teacher fit me for my irons. We had three sessions before settling on the right set for my game. Tried a couple of Mizuno offerings and Wilson offerings before settling in on my current set up.

Yeah,  kid was nice and I'm grateful for the experience but I still left wondering.  They had 50 shafts there and the Phenom TP is the only shaft I hit for any of the 3 clubs.  I even asked him about the other shafts and he said I wasn't going to get better numbers.  May have been correct but who is to say another may not have been 5-10 yards longer?  Concerning my irons,  I think the xp 105's most likely launch too high along with my early release.  Love the feel of the irons,  but I think I can get a little more out of them.

Totally agree. I've gone for fittings that were nothing more than swing two clubs of different lofts and see which one was better. A few tweaks here and there to the face and that was it.

Last fitting I went through my irons they did a size fitting and a shaft. Only bad part was they didn't have my exact specs in stock... so I had to order them and pray. Needless to say, the kid nailed everything bang on... I've gained anywhere from 5-20 yards a club.

The fitting I did this spring was completely different from when I hit a retail store.

I hit 6 different iron shafts and 7 or 8 in the driver.

I also hit two different iron heads and two different driver heads.

I had limited myself to a PING shop, but everything worked out great.

I will also say that had I not bought equipment from the fitter I would have had to pay him for his time.

Just went over my stats for the year and I'm down two strokes per 18 overall.

I can't imagine that - my guy, Avery Reed, spent a full morning with me and then took any question that I sent him after the fact with grace and dignity.  I can't recall now how many head/shaft combos we tried until we found the right one and we tried a couple after we found the right one just to be sure. By the time we got to fairway wood it took two attempts because he knew my swing.  Of course being at Sawgrass he's a very experienced fitter,  he had worked tour carts for four different tours before going to the Tour Performance center.   I'm pretty much dead on middle of the road numbers for an LPGA player and he has fitted tons of them so I don't think I was all that difficult to fit.

I will say that I've experienced across the board types of fittings.  I've always found that my best fittings have come from a fitter who was a good player or teaching pro.  That could be co-incidental but it is a fact for me.  I have had less success at big box places or with a fitter who wasn't really a player.  Thanks to MGS I'm at a point where if I were to go in for a fitting and be fed a line I'd know in a heartbeat - I like that other set of eyes and the differing thought process that a fitter brings but I know enough about my swing and equipment that I can pretty well match it up without the fitter if I need to.

For now my teaching pro is my fitter and club repair guy if I need one.  He handles Mizuno, Wilson, Nike, Adams, TMag and Adams at his shop so there are more than enough fun choices for anyone.

Put me in the crowd of folks who believe you only get out of a fitting what you put into it.   You have to come in with a purpose, a solid analysis of your own hiccups on the course, and your gamers in tow to use as a control, or you'll get spotty results.   If you go in and you have a sold knowledge of your typical miss, what sort of swingweight you like, general flex of shafts you like, what your typical launch angles, bs, and spin numbers are, then it's much easier to point you in a direction.   Otherwise, there are literally billions of shaft/head combo's that could be tried.   Most aren't worth the time to unscrew one head and screw in another.

Sure, I'd like to try a $500 Aldila Rogue in Tour X, but I have a 105 mph swing speed and I currently play a regular shaft.  It makes no sense.  At the same time, I know I have a low natural ball flight both with woods and irons with a late release.   A higher-launching, low torque shaft in both woods and irons suits me well.   I got those, and now I'm pretty much maxed out with my SS.   Unless I find a few more MPH, I'm not going to benefit from lower-spinning heads.  They fall out of the sky like wounded ducks for me.  There is a technological wall that we hit where there's little left that science can do for us on the distance side of things.   So I advise you temper your expectations.   Have a plan in mind, don't expect to find 20 more yards in the head or shaft not tried.

I think it really depends on where you go. All of my equipment was done at http://moderngolf.ca/ they have everything there and by far are the best in Canada and would rank with anyone in North America. What is nice the person/friend that does my fittings (Ian Fraser) also is my golf coach which is huge as he knows my game. Not inexpensive but like anything, you get what you pay for.

I was speaking to the fitter today an he said TM uses a club that tells them exactly what shaft you need.  Is that the MATTS system?  If so,  I must have used it because that would make sense although I don't remember it.  The fitting yesterday went pretty well.  It was about 52 degrees outside with a light rain,  I was hitting from a bay out into the range.  Started with the irons,  using my JPX EZ forged.  I love the feel of my irons so we just focused on getting the right specs.  My misses are slight push/fades and I launch it very high.  I suspected with my early release the XP 105's were adding to the problem.  The Mizuno shaft fit showed I needed the S300's which is what I have been told before.  Also,  needed them bent 2 degrees upright.  I am hoping this will give me some more consistency with my approach shots.

Driver we spent almost an hour and a half on using Flightscope.  Started with my current R1 V2 at 9* and compared the 2 shafts I have for it.  The Fuji Pro tour spec was all over the place for me.  I hit two long drives(for me) and everything else was high and way right which is my miss.  The Oban Kiyoshi white was more consistent.  Distance with the Oban was a little less on the good ones but not much and the launch/spin was better.  Dispersion was much better even though I still had a couple weak push/fades.

After looking at my numbers,  he had me start with the 915 D2 9.5 and the Diamana Whiteboard S flex.  I don't know if it fit my eye or I just put in some good swings but I was stupid straight with it and longer than my R1 by a few yards.  He liked the launch/spin numbers as well.  Still wanted to make sure we couldn't improve so he put the Rogue Silver in it.  I was hoping this would be the shaft that fit me with all I have been reading about it but it wasn't to be.  Just couldn't get in a groove with it,  dispersion was all over the place and I really didn't hit many good semi straight drives with it.  We also tried the Aldila Tour Green and same story.  Pulled like 5 drives in a row with it.  To make sure it wasn't a fluke,  put the Whiteboard back in and hit 4 beauties long and straight with one miss on the heel that still went straight.  So,  the whiteboard is what I went with in the D2 9.5 head.

I'm not very good with the spin/launch, etc but he is supposed to be emailing me the numbers and I will try to post them.  My good drives were around 260 yards(would be a bit farther in better conditions) but the consistency with the whiteboard/915 will hopefully save me a few strokes along with the iron adjustments.

Yes, yes, I did. Matt you would remember if you went through their MATTS system. They do have a control club that everyone hits. It's an older TMag not even a 460 cc with a stock stiff shaft. Even their touring pros start with the control club. They then dress you in special clothing with probes all over the place. That turns you into a golfing avatar. If anyone wanted to see what all of that looked like it's still under forum member reviews. Before that we filled out a questionnaire about my game for half an hour. By the time we were done there was even a recommendation for the type of arch support that I should have in my shoes.

I totally agree with Mark. A good fitting must be interactive between the player and the fitter.

Sounds like you had a great day Matt I hope you end up with a stick that makes the game more fun for you to play.

I have to agree with you on the part about the fitter. I am very fortunante that my fitter happens to be probably my best friend and we have played a lot of golf together. He is also an accomplished player and one of the top teaching pros on this beach. we were hitting balls last Sat with another friend and that friend stated I was striping the ball with those irons. I told him that out of all the sets I had ever played with these hit as good as my MP-33s if not better. My fitter friend said they ought to you dont know how many shafts I went through tuning those clubs! It does make a difference

OOH dont know about those wires I would be jittery like I was when in the sleep lab testing me for sleep apena. I asked the doctor how was I supposed to sleep with all these wires. They had me wired everywhere but my yazoo. I told them I hoped they had a good grounding system if not if we got a thunderstorm I would be fried!! But I did get over it after the 3 rd trip to the lab
