So you remember Travis Johnson, right?  No?  Maybe if I used his full name, Travis Matthew Johnson.  You know the guy I'm talking about now, right? The guy that took the clothing trends of Southern California and merged them with contemporary golf attire.  Unless I am mistaken, Travis Matthew was one of the first modern lifestyle brands in the golf apparel market.

That term, lifestyle brand, get's thrown around a lot too nowadays when it comes to golf apparel.  What does that really mean anyway?  Basically, it's a brand's way of telling you that you're going to get more mileage out of their apparel than golf specific brands.  The selections look good in almost every other aspect of life where participation requires clothes.  Oh, and yes, they'll look great on the golf course too.  For the most part, they won't look like a golf uniform either.

Well, as things happen in business, Travis Johnson isn't working for his first and middle name any longer.  Now, it's really just a fancy version of his first name.  Under the creative branding firm, Haus of Grey, Johnson has collaborated with design partner, Kelli Riley, to create Matte Grey (Men's line) and Heather Grey (Woman's line).

In the Spring of 2013, Matte Grey was born and bridged the gap between “mainstream fashion and modern athletic wear.”  A year later, in the Spring of 2014, Heather Grey was launched as the “feminine counterpart” to Matte Grey.

MyGolfSpy receives a lot of requests for editorial reviews from apparel manufacturers.  This is especially true for new brands emerging into the golf apparel landscape.  After all, let's face it, there is not an empirical way to properly measure or “review” apparel.  We can discuss fabric quality and construction, fit, finish, style, and cost.  But, to properly review a piece of clothing, it should really come after a season of wear and wash cycles.  That said, when I receive a new garment for editorial purposes I ask myself the simple question that has stood the test of time: Would I purchase this exact piece in store at the retail price.  Time and again, that answer is no.  When considering the Matte Grey collection from Haus of Grey, the answer is, yes.

The Badge Short

The Badge Short shown in Dark Taupe is a remarkably light pair of shorts.  They are a flat front, wrinkle free pair of shorts.  They fit true to size with a tailored appearance, and are water-resistant.  Constructed of 100% polyester, they are an excellent choice for extreme heat given their weight and fabric.  The Badge Short has an MSRP of $70.

Castro

The Castro polo has the look and feel of the classic cotton, oxford pique.  However, it's constructed of Polyester and Elastane.  As a result, it provides styling of cotton, with the easy care of the modern technical fabrics.  Haus of Grey describes this as a “Extremely Durable, mildew and abrasion resistant.”  In hand, the Castro feels like just that, a well constructed, durable shirt.  The Castro fit true to size with an MSRP of $50.

Although Haus of Grey is a new fish in the sea of golf apparel, it's being led by a man that's been there before.  So, it's no surprise that Haus of Grey is such a well designed piece of high quality apparel.  On or off the course, you can expect to wear it well in almost any setting.  Matte Grey looks cool, it's well constructed, and it fits appropriately while being priced accurately.  Give them a look, I would pull out my wallet for more.

Long sleeves? Loose fit?

I need short short sleeves. This style and those sleeves.

That buckle logo is terrible ny the way. Looks like AAA. People will stop you if your car breaks down in the UK.

Classic style...John Barry, I chuckled at your comment after seeing years of how you roll on the course (and want to add that I've always enjoyed your take on golf fashions) . I like the new line but when I see the golf centric clothing going for double what I pay for quality shirts I look elsewhere. Can't say I'd ever buy anything but the hats...I like it more than the TM line if only because it doesn't look quite so slim fit.  I'm in decent shape but the high end stuff often looks cut for stick figures. The womens stuff I think will do well. Not all pink and cutesy. Looks good but real world functional.
