That is my private hell....I can't hit a low draw and if I fade the ball it is an accident.  Best hope for me would be over it with the driver.

Here's my entry for the WTF award.   Sadly, I can't show you photos from the course since they closed this abomination last year, but here's the google aerial with colored lines draw in to show you what is easily the worst-designed 9 holes of golf I've ever played.  The back nine at Cascades Fairways.    Actually, I quit and walked off after 14th, I'd had enough.

11 was about a 420 yard PAR FIVE.   How could it be a 5 and so short, you ask?   Because It was straight up hill and so steep that you had to hit your high lofted clubs just to get up the slope.  Driver and long irons were merely pounded into the hillside.  I hit 5w, wedge, wedge.  Completely blind second and third, of course, which is a good thing because when you get to the top of the hill, you see a double green with people putting on the back half of it which is THE NEXT HOLE.   Then you had to walk about 120 yards backwards to get to the 12th tee.   You can just imagine the multiple crossing shots that zing past your ears as two foursomes, one of them coming up to a blind mesa, and the other slicing its shots at you to the right, are aiming at the same general area.   It was like a shooting gallery.

Then the real beauty was the 13th, a short downhill par 4 aimed straight thru six fairly low slung Hi-voltage power lines (see blue lines).   Your drive and approach passed through these lines 4 times on the way to the green, which sat directly in front of one power tree.   That gave you at least 24 chances to hit a line and get to re-hit (mandatory) while playing the hole normally.   No wonder I walked off.

wtfaward.jpg

Actually, the final straw was the next par three.   We went to the tips and saw yardage markers and the scorecard that said 185 to the center of the green.  Our laser and gps had the same yardage at about 125.  Who to believe?   We then paced it at 125 and after that we got in our carts and drove home.

Here's another WTF I saw for the first time on Sunday, courtesy of a pair of homeowners who decided to pool together to "protect" their homes.   It has ruined the finishing hole on the front nine and now the course has to eliminate the back tee boxes and move them forward, putting the green in driveable range over the marsh.

I play a course where there are low hanging power lines 100 yards off the tee box all the way across it. I don't know what the course rule is on it, but we just re-tee if we hit them.

The bermuda triangle at Chippewa? I belive the local rule is you get a free drop.

Gastonia Municipal in Gastonia NC has power lines running across the entire length of the fairway on one hole. In fact I hit those lines in a High School golf match. Cut a balata Titleist darn near in two it was nasty had blue goop squirting out of it. Got to replace the ball and replay the shot with no penality though.

There are a lot of homeowners here that have done that but I don't recall any of the safety nets altering the playability of the hole

That almost reminds me of a local executive course we have here. The second green was the most dangerous green I have ever seen on any course. You were subject to be hit from the 1st hole, the driving range and the 9 th hole. They finally erected a net around it. On the same course they had to put a similar net around the 14th green because you could be hit from the 13th tee or 15 th tee.

I guess it just wasn't meant to be a golf course.

I guess it just wasn't meant to be a golf course.

You got that right.   It actually was a recent 9 hole addition to a old-style orchard loop that had to be built in back of the front nine in the hills.   The owners had a 99 year lease and earth moving equipment, so they basically did it themselves.   It was never a success and finally the owner of Overstock.com went to the city and said, "Look, I'll buy it for a nominal fee and turn the front 50 acres into a city park while I develop the rest into executive homes."   City said "Sure" and no golfers objected.

As to the second "Net" case, there was no need for homeowner #2 to even erect the net in his yard, because his house is tucked behind the willow tree on the left, not in the line of fire.   The net actually protects two homes that sit about 240 downrange to the left.   But by erecting a short two-pole net here, they save themselves from having to put up a much longer 4-6 pole net around their backyards.   Needless to say, all the golfers are livid.

Can I rant for a minute about folks who buy homes on golf courses, only to wake up SHOCKED, SHOCKED I SAY, that they are living in a home on a golf course.

We have a course here where the poles are on each edge of the fairway and the lines hang low over the fairway. They are certainly in play, yet I've never seen anyone hit them. Local rule is it's a re-tee if you hit them.

There is a course here like that and the first time I ever played it I said no way anyone can hit that. Well on the 14th hole I nailed the power lines with a shot and couldn't stop laughing when it happened

Someone told me once that in Florida when the build a golf course, then put houses around it, that the homeowners have no recourse if a ball hits their house; the course was there first. Don't know if that's true or not. He probably said that so I wouldn't be worried about hitting them. There sure are a lot of houses there! I hate golf courses with houses on them.

We have that a lot here in this area and from what I have been told here a golfer is not responsible for hitting a house. The insane thing about here is that a lot of retirees that live on the courses don't even play golf in fact they hate golfers. From what I have been told most of them bought on the courses in the hey days of the real estate boom to try to resale for a profit

Yes sir!

Figured that was it. My best shot on that course was 2 seasons ago. #17 par 3, hit it solid, straight as a die towards the flag, hit 6-8 inches in front of the flag and rollllllled...2 putt par. :(

I feel your pain. I've had a couple of birdie opportunities on that hole and always found a way to get par instead.

OK, I was waiting to see what other people had to put up with on their golf courses.  But you have to see where I play.  This is my practice course, and there are shots I have to use just to avoid obstacles.  It was originally a hay field with a road running through it.

Hole#2 Par 4 from the tee

Hole#2tee.jpg

Hole #2 from 100yards (I am usually right behind the pole)

Hole#2at100.jpg

Hole #3 Par 5 from 200yards (only really a problem if you don't hit is this far)

Hole#3at200.jpg

Hole #5 Par 4 tee

Hole#5tee.jpg

Hole #8 Par 4 tee (Hazard left and right, fairway over the trees)

Hole#8tee.jpg

Hole #8 pole close-up (As you can see, this pole has been hit many times and I have contributed to the total.)

Hole#8pole.jpg

It's a free drop when hitting either the wires or the poles, but the second shot is never as good as the first shot was going to be!

This course has some challenging shots, but the course conditions are not that good.  My wife and I play here after work since Hole #3 is at the end of the airport runway and her business is located at the airport (only private planes and medivac).  Easy after work play in the summer.  The best part is that membership is cheap and we can afford to play other courses in the area, or what we really like to do is travel throughout the Northwest with the occasional golf trip somewhere.  If we joined the local country club, we wouldn't be able to afford it.

We don’t stop playing the game because we get old; we get old because we stop playing the game.”
