Clean Bottle: Kickstarter and Shark Tank

We live in an interesting time for fledgling businesses, and Clean Bottle is a prime example of this. I don't usually watch Shark Tank, but sometimes it sucks me in. I'm typically a bit more interested in the hopes and dreams when I watch it as opposed to the your product is garbage brutality that comes in to play occasionally.

Anyway, Clean Bottle was on Shark Tank Season 3, promoting their idea of a bottle that unscrews both at the top and the bottom. It seemed like something so obvious that it should have been done before, but we all missed out on that idea. Clean Bottle thought of it, got funded by sharks, and has since done very well.

They even had the Clean Bottle mascot at the Tour de France.

I've got a couple of the squeeze-type Clean Bottles here around the house and they are great. Perhaps a bit heavier than a traditional water bottle, but being able to take off the bottom to actually clean the bottle properly is a huge benefit.

On to Kickstarter and The Square 2.0

A few weeks back, I was contacted about checking out the new Square 2.0 bottle that Clean Bottle is crowd-funding through Kickstarter. Having used their bottles before, and being Kickstarter-curious, I was eager to check it out.

Here's what the new Square 2.0 is all about:

•                Removable Bottom for easy cleaning

•                Iconic square shape so the bottle won't roll away, but still fits in cup holders

•                Quarter turn lids for easy opening and leak proof seal

•                BPA free materials

•                Lifetime guarantee

•                25% larger than the original square (now 25 oz)

•                New Modules for water filtering and fruit infusing

•                1/3 the original price -- Now $15 shipped for the basic bottle

I bolded the last three because those are the new aspects of the Square 2.0. Cheaper price is great, but I think that the fruit infusion module, and the carbon filter module in particular will be useful additions for the golfer.

Fruit Infusion Chamber Module

Fruit and vegetable water infusions provide a healthy and tasty alternative to sugar-based drinks.  Simply chop up a handful of your favorite fresh fruits, place them in the infusion chamber and fill with water.  In minutes you will have great tasting, naturally sweetened water.  And because the Fruit infusing Chamber is located at the bottom of the Square, it holds the fruit down, maximizing its exposure to the water.

This one is for those who like a little something extra in their water. I usually prefer my water to be hop and malt infused, but some of the Bloom Infusion Pods that Clean Bottle will be offering do look tasty. Of course, you are welcome to cram anything into the chamber that you like. Fill it with lemons and sardines if you want, it's your water. The chamber will keep whatever you add in place so you can chug a lug without choking.

Fast-Flow Carbon Filter Module

The Fast Flow Water Filter turns the Square into a portable water filter.  Just unscrew the bottom and fill the Square via the fast flow filter, and in 30 seconds you have a bottle of great tasting, clean water.  Traditional filtered water bottles use a filter inserted in the nozzle of the straw, adding resistance and making them tough to drink from.  The Square filters water on the way into the bottle, so that the drinking experience isn't affected.

Each filter lasts for three months and the 100% natural Activated Carbon filter removes chlorine, disinfection by-products, herbicides and pesticides, and many other organic and inorganic contaminants that lead to bad tastes and odors.

This is actually the feature that I am the most interested in. Let's face it, some of the on-course drinking water that we encounter is questionable, if not downright nasty. This filter takes away some of the junk in the water, and does so quickly. I am already planning on making this my go-to golf bag water bottle just for this reason. If it keeps me from buying bottled water, it'll pay for itself in a few rounds. If it keeps me from drinking the on-course yuck, that's a huge plus for me.

It's Fully Kickstarted, and Still Available

Clean Square-1.jpg

I've checked out some stuff on Kickstarter before, but usually by the time I find what I like, it's all gone (Knox Wallet) or the funding time has passed (Device Brewery). The Square 2.0 project has been fully funded, but you can still pre-order bottles and modules for delivery in April. At $15 shipped for a bottle, and $20 for a bottle and a module, you are looking at a pretty solid deal. It would make a great (insert your celebration here) holiday gift if they were available now, but the pre-order of one as a gift is still not a terrible plan.

You can wrap up the pre-order slip in a box. The recipient may not be totally stoked when they open that box, but they will be very happy when the other box comes in April. You will be giving two gifts for the price (and effort) of one. That's winning 2.0.
