Why Spin Control?

Recommended Posts

I am in no means a great player but have been playing for years. I finally came to realize I can't spin the ball the way the pros do. In fact over my career I have yet to play with someone that has the spin mastered. Why are we so infatuated with spin. Wouldn't getting past this vice help to lower costs for the average golfer IE: cheaper golf balls?

Interested to keep up with all the happenings on the site.

Thanks

There's a lot of things the Pros do that I can't - lol

Seriously though, I just try to play within my capabilities and work on self improvement.  If I need to bump & run, or hit my approach shot to roll on to a green instead of hitting the green and spinning to a stop, there's no shame in that.

There's definitely no need for most players to purchase the most expensive golf balls, just because "that's what the pros play."

Like I said I just gave up trying to "think" I could do it. I'm now different than any other guy out there that want the latest and greatest. I have turned my attention away from the ball and am trying to focus more on equipment. Most recently figuring out how to lower my spin rate on drives down below 2200 rmp. I actually prefer to flight the ball low on the second or third and let it run.

Spin gives control so even if you cant spin it back like a pro the spin from a premium type ball will let you control the ball a bit more around the greens.

First, welcome to MGS, langesc88. Happy you joined us!

With my ss I don't generate a lot of spin, but I can't stop the tour balls on the green better than the cheaper balls. What Theoo said... I can control what the ball does from 150 in and around the green. I typically play on smallish greens, so the feel of a ball off the wedges and putter is important to me. Harder distance balls tend to not stop as quick and run off.

I think for most people the ball is a personal thing that you get used to and play accordingly. If you like the pricy balls, there are cheaper ways to play them than paying full retail.

I'm a relatively low-spin player too.  Full wedges rarely roll back unless the green is sloped towards me.  Around the green I use loft to stop my pitch shots more than I use spin.  I play the Pro V1 for mid to long iron shots because no matter how much you spin the ball....the tour balls spin more.  My 7 iron typically rolls out 5-6 feet.  If I use a ball like the E6 or NXT that same shot will roll out 20-25'.  That lets me aim for the center of the green and know it will stay there, even if I hit it a bit too hard or too soft.  The other ball will bounce and bound over if It's hit too far, and if it's a front pin to some sort of elevated green I would have no chance.

Welcome to the Forum!  One thing you'll find is that you'll get lots of feedback and thoughtful opinions here, with none of the "attitude" you might find on other sights.  We're the "Who-Ville" of Golf Forums, without the Grinch!

I'd be very curious to find out how well Taylormade's "a" ball sold this year.  That was supposed to be a "spin" ball that was more suited to amateurs' games and priced around $32 a dozen.

I strated using the "a" ball toward the end of the season. I love it! It will be my ball going into next season.
