Fun Game

I know that we've had topics like this before and God forbid that I should talk about a form of golf that's not according to the rule book so lets say that we played a round yesterday and the competition committee for our group developed several "local" rules to govern our competition.

We had a 3 (me), a 24 and two 14's and we wanted to put something fun together for the day.

Here's what we did and it was a blast:

We decided on a scramble and moved me back a set of tees (I'm not that long but trust me when I write that I'm very, very steady and I'm longer than you think because for the most part I actually hit it the distances that I report - sometimes it amazes me how my 230 yard drives dribble past the 260 yard drives of my playing partners.)

Each side got to call back two of their opponent's shots per 9 - Imagine holing a 30 footer only to have to do it again or stiffing an approach over water from 180 and hearing - why don't you hit another one.

Our opponents got two mulligans a side to use as they wished and my playing partner got 2 - I got none.

I have to tell you that this entire drama was so much fun that it even led to my partner and I inverting the order on some holes - All mulligans and call backs had to be done immediately - you couldn't wait on the next shot but had to call it right away so by allowing me to go first it often put pressure on our opponents regarding the call backs and always let my partner know whether or not a mulligan was needed.

We won the front and the press, we won the match and the back but lost the press on both when I couldn't replicate my hole out from off the green on 18 after it was called back. :)

We used this format once last year with a different set of players - I would highly recommend it for a buddy round or when you have guys of disperate abilities playing.  Sometimes we'll play my two roomates against me but giving me a few little extras - like a couple of free tosses a 9 or a toss and a mulligan - It's amazing what those types of things do for your course management - Once I had a par 5 that I couldn't reach in two because of the creek 20 yards short of the green - but with a toss...... I hit it into the creek - they laughed, I went into the water picked it up and threw it right next to the hole for a tap in eagle - :)
