Two new Hogan Iron lines?! FW15 and TK15

Recommended Posts

More new stuff to see and do at the Hogan site, in case you haven't seen it yet.   It appears they will launch TWO product lines of irons and wedges.

CORRECTION:   The FW (Fort Worth?) appear to be the Irons and the TK's appear to be the wedges.

I just completed the fitting as far as it would go (still not finished) and it gave very good recommendations for lofts in the FW's.  It's more involved and gives better results than the old Scor fit test.

It does appear that as rumored, they will sell BY LOFTS, not club numbers.   I for one, REALLY like this concept.

bag - SunMountain Synch with Ogio Synergy X4 cart
driver - :callaway-small: Optiforce 440, Paderson Kevlar Green stiff 46.5"
fwoods - :taylormade-small: Jetspeed, 3HL regular
irons - :taylormade-small:  Speedblades 3-8, 85g stiff steel, 2 up
wedges - :edilon-small: Scor 40, 45, 50, 54, 58
putter - :ping-small: Ketsch 35" slight arc, SuperStroke 2.0 mid-slim
ball - :titelist-small: ProV1x

I just saw this on the service-center page:

"Aftermarket alterations including re-shafting, loft and lie adjustments or re-milling/grinding voids the warranty."

So the warranty for the clubs lasts a lifetime but becomes void if you have the lies adjusted?  I understood that forged clubs can get out of whack and loft or lie angle may need periodic adjustment. This seems like a recipe for unhappy customers.

What's in the Bag:

Driver: TaylorMade SLDR 10.5 (set to 11.5), Kuro Kage Aftermarket Only Blue 60S, NDMC+4

Fairway: Callaway Big Berth Alpha 815 14 (set to +2,N), Speeder 665 Stiff, NDMC

Hybrid: Adams XTD-ti 20 (set to 19.5), Matrix hQ3 Red Tie Stiff

Irons: Mizuno JPX 825 Pro 4-GW, KBS Tour Stiff, 1* flat, Blue PURE DTX

Wedges: Mizuno MP-T11, 56/13 & 60/5, DG Spinner, Blue PURE DTX

Putter: Bettinardi Studio Stock 15, 34", 5* loft, 2* flat, SuperStroke Slim LITE 3.0

Bag: Mizuno Aerolite SPR stand bag

Ball: Wilson Staff Duo Urethane (summer), Srixon Q-STAR Yellow (winter)

That's pretty much standard for any product, any industry.   You mess with it, we won't service it for free.   Not unlike Ping.

That said, Scor has always been very particular about buying the right set up from the factory and not bending for loft afterwards.   The intensive fitting routine they display here says they intend to do more of the same.   Of course, they'll still service, they'll just charge for it.

I for one think that selling by loft and not by loft and number will add significant time to the length of a round.

Just what the game needs -

Sorry Mark -- not everyone is a low handicapper and for that matter not every low capper puts his clubs away properly every time - when you play in a place where you have to ride and are grabbing a couple of clubs out of the bag it's very easy to tell between a 7,8 at a glance - between 48,44,40?  Not so much - I'm not talking about once the club is soled behind the ball - I mean grabbing a couple of clubs out of the bag.  Once the club is soled I'd notice that I had 40 instead of 48 - by then my playing partner will have the cart in the woods somewhere or with the beer girl and I'll have a choice between taking the 44 and trying to force it or walking over to him and then back to my ball while the group behind me stands with hands on hips.

I do however agree that it would be nice to customize and have my lofts on my 7 iron - I don't care if they put the lofts on just so long as they put the number that I want to go with those lofts so that I don't have the aforementioned issue or even worse get stuck behind a group that has it.

Thanks for the links and the heads up on the updated website.  Getting very excited for the release.  Talked about it with the pro at Four Seasons golf today.

Srixon ZX5 MK II  5-GW - UST recoil Dart 65 R flex

India 52,56 (60 pending)  UST recoil 75's R flex

Evon roll ER 5 32 inches

It's our offseason so auditioning candidates - looking for that right mix of low spin long, more spin around the greens - TBD

But Rev you already do it with your 3 Scor wedges!  No problems distinguishing there, I trust.   We alreadly do it for all our wedges and our drivers and fairway metals and hybrids.   Why not do it for the 4 thru 8 irons too, which used to be called mashies and niblicks and still folks muddled through.

I don't think these Hogans will be for hackers anyway, so it's a moot point.   If they don't know their distances and all their specs, the Hoganfit system isn't for them.

UPDATE:  Sorry guys, but it looks like the Hogan site got bombarded by peekers today and they took it all down or blocked it off.   You have to move fast when you get a tip.  And sometimes as a spy, you get caught by counter-intelligence, what can I say.

I didn't save copies of the linked pages, but at least you have Hckymeyer's one screenshot.   Things are looking very good, I will say that, and in 3 days everyone else will see it too.

It looks like Ben Hogan has a great location at the PGA Merchandise Show, as well.  They'll be right next to the Equipment Test Center, in the "Fit to Win" one booth over from Flightscope.

Obviously, I'm hoping to get my hands on these while I'm at the show, but I imagine their booth will be packed!

It looks to me like the company has really gone all in on this, particularly since they're dropping the SCOR brand name.  Personally, that's a move I've questioned, since they've spent years building the value and name recognition of SCOR.

I looks to me like the Srixon Z-545 & Z-745 irons, forged and with their "Tour VT" sole, are directly comparable to the Ben Hogans.  I'm hoping to get a change to try them side by side, or at least one right after the other.

I suspect the Ben Hogan's are either going to make a big splash, or a big crash.  I don't see a middle ground here.

@Mark - we snooze, we loose, not your fault and thanks for the heads up.  In regards to the numbers I do have issues with my SCORS and they are 60,53,48 - it got really bad when I had the 44 in the bag.  They look a lot alike, when I'm playing for fun it's often with a parishioner or staff member - I'm way more concerned with their game and their enjoyment than mine and so I often will put my clubs back in the wrong spot, almost always go to their ball, grab clubs and walk to mine - it just doesn't work out well when I have 79 to a front pin and the 60,48 are the options - on the bright side I've learned lots of different ways to hit that 48.

I didn't have this issue before I got into SCORs because it was easy to tell what wedge I had by its bounce!

Regardless I agree with he concept, I have been tweaking my lofts since the advent of the hybrid - I had to tweak the lofts in order to get the set to flow once I started bagging a hybrid 10 years ago and have been doing it ever since - I know how far I hit each club by number not by loft number - I even think of my SCORs as L,S,G even through they have loft numbers on them.

Well, I'll concede that I probably have an easier time because I use a 14 cell divided bag and the clubs can only sit in one spot where they rest in little staggered stairsteps.   So I'm always reaching for the same spots.

But I've also mentally adjusted to thinking of the lofts first, I guess.  I know all the lofts of my Speedblades by heart now, probably because I've switched out everything at both ends and am dying to switch the 7 and 8 as well.   For me the Hogan fitter was exactly what I wanted to see because I know all the lofts I want.

On that note, I just got a 19 degree Jetspeed hybrid which I'm going to test against my 17 degree SB 3 iron and my 21 degree JS 5HL fairway.   My goal is to see if I can get rid of BOTH the 3 i and 5w using the one hybrid for all shots.   The 5HL goes 230 REALLY high and is great off the deck and light rough, but terrible in deeper rough.   The 3i goes 230 to 250 with a piercing, reliable flight, but I can only hit it off a tee.   Useless on fairway or rough.   In theory the 19 hybrid should go about the same 230 distance and be more versatile.  We'll see.

Here's a curious update.   A blogger on another site claims to have just seen the new Hogans on a course in Texas where they were being tested by Hogan staff.   They swore him to "semi" secrecy and did not allow him to take photos.   But this is what he said they look like:

"I SAW THE HOGANS TODAY ... They are clean and pretty.   I remember seeing a picture posted on here of a photoshop job someone did combining a Scor and Hogan and they were close to that.  The v sole was definitely there.  I think they closely resembled the Scor/Hogan picture with a combination of 1999 Apex Redlines.  I AM SO EXCITED!"

Well folks, that photoshopper was me and in case you missed it, here is the picture again.  (It is not a spy photo, it is purely a distortion of my Scor 41 stretched to about a 7 iron equivalent and with the Hogan Redline logo superimposed on the back after I removed the Scor logo.)

hogan scor.jpg

Here are the 1999 Hogan Apex's for further reference, but I believe the poster actually meant to compare them to the 1988 Redlines seen in the second pic below.

99 hogan.jpg

How close will they be to the FW15's?   We'll see in two days.   I, for one, think that the more they are like Scors, the more likely I'll be to buy them.

I just noticed that we have the exact same bag from the Scor 45 to putter, except mine are .5" long.   The Hogan fit will probably point you to FW 41, 37, 33, 29, 25, 22's like it did for me, so I'll be watching you closely.

I'm interested to see how it goes. My plan is for the 4* gaps like you have there but I've also put some passing thought into 5* gaps or a combination. I guess I don't know enough about it but what is the reasoning behind the 4* gaps that most companies use? My other dilemma will be whether or not I want to order the 4 iron or keep my Titleist hybrid in the bag.

As of this post I have not yet received any type of notification about the "sneak peek".

The Hoganfit will ask you about your hybrids, so it might only recommend up to the 5 iron.

Looks like they pushed the clock back 24 hours.   They probably forgot about MLK day.

That may have been on the website early on - but I don't think it's there now.  From my discussions with them, issues including warranty, loft and lie adjustments, who can do those adjustments and will it affect warranty are still being determined.  My guess would be they'd prefer you to go through an authorized Hogan fitter - but it's just that, my guess.  They did tell me that each club is  adjustable 2-3 degrees, which is standard for any forged club.

That's my guess too, as I know they allowed SCOR fitters to adjust their clubs "in-house."

So, I did their online fitting and the results seem pretty decent.  Unfortunately they do not offer left handed versions yet (and they were sure to let me know up front).  That hasn't stopped them from pounding my inbox with "buy me", "are you ready to buy" e-mails on an almost daily basis.
