Hello from Sydney OZ

Recommended Posts

Great site and great approach to golf.

I took golf up more seriously five years ago, after only occasional rounds over 30 years merely intended to maintain a handicap.

Unfortunately, my only consistency is my inconsistency.

2015 is to be the year I get down to A-Grade, or close. Currently, am 17 which means playing to somewhere between 10 and 25 on any given day.

Best purchase last year was my Bombtech Driver. Great effort by the little man to come up with something different and effective. Hopefully, it will go well in the 2015 testing, too. Otherwise I am a Titleist man with AP1 irons, fairway wood and hybrid plus Volkey wedges. Experimented with other wedges, but back to the Volkey.

I use a "red dragon" stamp on my balls, hence my moniker.

One minor gripe is that a site like MGS fires you up with an introduction to the latest gear and models as they are released in the northern hemisphere. Then, we have a wait of two or more months before they are released in Oz, sometimes barely able to contain our desire for the newest and latest. For my birthday in March, I hope the new Ping Ketsch will be available as my present to myself.

In Australia while it is too cold for golf in much of USA, we swelter. I prefer the cold, where you can always add another layer even if it means ending up like the Michelin Man. In the heat, there is a limit to how many layers you can shed.

Still, I have no excuse not to practice, if I want to be committed to reducing handicap.

May 2015 be the year I go from caterpillar to butterfly instead of embracing the Chinese Year of the Goat.

Scarlet Dragon.

Welcome mate.

Well, I'll take the sweltering like I was used to over the frigid cold and not being able to play any day...if only it wasn't so expensive back home.

Welcome Dragon,

Love the enthusiasm and keep working at it.  I have always wanted to visit Oz; love the people and the golf down there.

I think I might have to go back and add this to my post on the "bucket list" thread.

Good to have you aboard!

Thank you for the responses.

I was particularly delighted to see Sully from Bombtech in on the site.

Great to see the international responses, too.

As the sun shines into my study, I commiserate with those of you in northern part of USA coping with the snow.....unless of course, you are also skiers in which case, it is heaven sent.

Our snow fields are small, relatively speaking, and so our season is short. (If we are serious, we go to the Northern Hemisphere for skiing and enjoy the hospitality and welcome Aussies manage to get. At least, that has been our experience in Colorado, Canada and Italy).

Part of the golf course in Thredbo NSW becomes ski trails in the winter season.

One ski trail on the golf course is called "Funnel Web", after a very venomous spider native only to Australia.

In summer, I think the name still could apply to that hole because of its narrow fairway, trees and "rough".

The other feature of that course in summer is that it encourages everyone to be very welcoming. Not really, but that is the appearance as everyone waves their hands to be rid of the irritating little bush flies that fly around your face.

As our dollar gets worse against your US$ or Euro, I encourage you to visit.

You will love the golf and the climate and most importantly, the people.

Cheers and thanks for making me feel welcome.

Sounds like you're around Thredbo maybe? I grew up in Sydney and played for 1 year when I was about 18...gave it up until I moved here in 2005.

I never made it to Australia but I live in NZ for 6 months. Was an unreal time..Maybe I should have stayed!

Hey Dragon!

Nothing says come to OZ and play golf like cheap dollars and irritating bush flies that fly around your face.

I would love to come visit.  I belong to a timeshare that has about 15 condos along the eastern coast with the following locations in NSW; Sydney near the business district, Pokolbin, Port Stephens, Salamander Bay, Port Macquarie, and Coffs Harbour.

Maybe when I finally retire... which could be later this year!
