Bridgestone J815 Driver

I think it's fair to say that this will be a polarizing one - it's different, certainly from Bridgestone Golf who have traditionally gone the, er, traditional route with the aesthetics of their golf equipment. I actually really like it.

Bridgestone's J815 Driver is touted as targeting Professionals to mid-hdcp amateurs and features:

  • Power Rib sole provides increased rigidity for 460cc F.A.S.T. (Flex Action Speed Technology) Crown to flex against:
    • Maximum ball velocities through increased repulsion
    • Highest launch angles through increased crown deformation
  • Power Milled face provides incredible spin reduction
  • Low and deep center of gravity produces forgiving high launching distance
  • Variable Adjust System lets the user choose their desired face and lie angle setting
  • Lofts: 8.5°, 9.5°, 10.5°, 12°
  • Mitsubishi Fubukiâ„¢ ZT Driver Shaft

“Firming up the sole with the Power Rib structure gives the crown something to grip onto and flex,” says Josh Kinchen, Bridgestone's marketing manager for golf clubs. “We used simulator technology from Bridgestone's tire division to prove the theory.” The additional crown flex provides a driver that launches higher, with the additional benefit of more draw bias as weight has been shifted more toward the heel.

There is a black version which is being released for the Japanese market - which also looks sweet - just waiting to hear back re whether this will be available to the North American market as well. [uPDATE] - At this stage there are no plans for other colors in the J815 for the US.

What are your thoughts? Like it? Love it? Loathe it? Want the black one? I think it'd make me feel like Superman swinging it - I could dig that!...

Interesting that Bridgestone is releasing something this wild.  I think most people here would chose the black.  I like the design, but the red would would take some getting used to unless you are coming off a Nike or Cobra.

I like it. There's a lot more room to play around with design on a driver. Not talking size, but with regards to what golfers accept/like/tolerate/love.

It's a good move from Bridgestone if they want to play with the big boys.

That's a wild paint job, but I bet it performs.

Optimus Prime, reporting for duty!

Wow. Not what I was expecting of Bridgestone. Not liking the mention of intentional draw bias.

I remember having a Srixon W-506 from maybe 8-10 years ago that already had a crown that flexed like this without any grooves or ribs or anything, and it hit pretty darn great. Good concept and it works, but definitely not new.

Their iron lineup looks great...
