My first birdie!

jdiddyesquire

Recommended Posts

I hit my first birdie today. Par 4. Carried 170 off the tee, sweet 9 iron to the green from about 120 out. 6 feet from the cup and tapped it in.

I shot a 106 on the day, but who cares? I I had as many pars as I did triples. Admittedly every triple was because I teed off with a driver and put it into the trees. Once I stuck to my woods I was much better.

Oh well. Live and learn.

Well done!

As one who has carded far more doubles than birdies I know the excitement.

I remember my first. I was a bit stunned that it actually happened.

Good job!  I like what you wrote, the score means nothing what is important is you got your first birdie, and you realized that using the Big Dog where trees are present can bring big trouble.  Big Dogs like trees and water.

Great stuff, and a proper birdie as well. I had to chip in for my first birdie (I say chip, I think I thinned it and it hit the flag hard and dropped in).

Bogey. I shot par or bogey on every par 3 on the course. Was hitting my irons pretty well and the greens were so wet that my ball was just stopping dead and/or embedding in the surface. I'm sure 90% of those shots run off the back of the green any other time of the year.

Lots of dropped strokes due to that driver though. I probably would have shot 10 strokes better if I left my driver in the car.

Well leave it in the car!  I occasionally do this just to make me hit different clubs.  Once out on the course, I tend to pull the driver even when I don't want/need to.  My practice course is short enough that I can do this, and I have found that I can pull all woods/hybrids out of my bag and shoot the same score only playing irons.  Can't do that on longer courses, but Hey, it's practice!

Leave the driver out, and see what happens, even if it means laying up on long par 4's.

I think my mentality on it has more to do with the notion that "I should be able to hit with every club in my bag" rather than "I must hit ball far to demonstrate manliness". Ya know? I just hate not being able to hit a club well. I keep trying to hit lob shots for the same reason haha.

If your Driver is off at Olympia, your dead meat.  If it's on, you can reach 90% of the Par 5's in two.  I have dumped plenty of balls in the sand trap that protects the Green on #4 from the tee box.....

True of a lot of courses here. Part of the Hill Country style course charm.

Even the Quarry which is super wide open has that brutal wild grass. Very little playable rough.

I'm not saying stop playing the driver.  Just try something different once in awhile.

The driver will require lessons, as will the lob wedge.  Don't think you can figure it out all by yourself; I did that and it probably cost me 5 years of undoing my bad habits!
