Conclusions we jump to

Was paired up with a stranger the last time I played and naturally sized him up before we teed off. I'm the kinda guy that likes to hang out at the car wash and guess who is in each car. Fun times.

 

It got me thinking about the conclusions we immediately jump to when we see someone new. For me, it's putter grip and putter grip. Nothing screams I have flatstick issues like a contorted claw grip or a massive flag pole 5" diameter grip.

 

What else makes you jump to an assumption?

I've seen so many people both suck and be pretty decent with so many different types of equipment I don't judge much any more.  There are a few I still have in my head though.

I've been proven both wrong and right so many times I just try to keep it to myself now.

So far I have found that anyone gaming the new Mizzy driver is either awesome for their handicap or pretty long (not both).

I don't get this assumption. I switched to a super stroke last year and it's amazing. Has it made me a better putter? A tad... but mostly it is a confidence thing. I know that I won't get handsy and pull it.  

 

Don't get me wrong I make assumptions based on what I see in their bag as well but not on their grips. I would be more concerned with a guy that has a 1 iron with a dime size mark on the sweet spot.

 

Or sit back and watch the guy with a chipper club.

I try not to make assumptions about others, knowing full well they're making assumptions about me.  Played last year with a father-adult son duo.  Not a crowded day -- first hole is a narrow par 5.  Wound up hitting my best drive of the year, put the second shot on the green and two putted for birdie.  They left-righted their way to the green and said, "why don't you go ahead of us, we don't want to slow you down." 

 

I stunk up the course over the final 17...

 

So much for their assumptions!

 

That said...if someone waggles more than I do (which would put them in the Judge Smails category), then we're in for a long day.  If they waggle less than I do, I won't want to bet with that dude....

As a group Leader, I set the pairings every Saturday for about 40 players.  Most of the regulars have settled in on a foursome, but then there are quite a few "singles" or "twosomes" that I have to pair up.  One guy in particular, we call him Bucket Hat, because he always wears one......is a retired mainframe technician that has a very quirky personality.  He's a nice guy, but nobody wants to play with him.  In order to not get the opportunity, you must be part of a foursome....LOL  This guy does not pay attention to the things around him and that is what drives everybody else crazy.  So I have to remember who I have paired him with so that I can rotate him through the others.  I do not want to sound cruel, but nobody wants to play with him.  When others yell at me after playing a round with Bucket Hat, I simply remind them to come to me with a foursome next week and that will keep him out of your group.

Past summer, buddy and I played TPC San Antonio.

 

We were paired with a two-some,  BOTH guys, Decked out head to toe Foot Joy, 100% Titleist gear, Naturally I thought Ballers.....

 

We are waiting for #1 tee box clear and I overhear "Tour Issue this, Tour Issue that".  I was preparing to see some tour quality golf.

 

We roll up to the box, they pull over the Tournament tees, and we let them hit. That is where everything went down hill.

 

Just for fun we kept their score on paper,  After 9, a combined 53 over.

 

They never showed up to the box on 10........   <_>

When i first started golfing all I cared about was being long and straight off the tee. I figured after that no one would pay attention to how much I sucked.

I only get worried when the person I'm playing with has some form of blades that aren't anywhere close to new and they all have the worn triangle on them.

 

I will not get into the money game at that point.

 

Other than that I assume nothing.
