How other sports effect our golf game

Recommended Posts

How do the other sports we play effect our games?

I played basketball and I feel it helped my mentality with not getting too high or too low when I make or miss a shot because I know there will be another. Also with my hand-eye coordinator which helps me get away with a lot more in my swing than I should.

What about you?

Baseball swing and the golf swing didn't always play nice together growing up.

Lotta hooks off the tee.

I won the table tennis champ in community college. LOL! Beat all the asian guys, they were impressed. So fun!

I played a LOT of different things growing up, not always the organized sports vein. Lotta pickup games that were pretty rough with guys that went on to varsity and college in football/hockey/etc. Broke the left ankle in a backyard football game at 13 and it was never the same again. Lotta pond hockey with those same frackers.

Athleticism/eye/hand translates to golf pretty well.

For a very long time playing hockey helped me to come in extremely steep.  This allowed me to take massive beaver size pelts with my irons and wedges and imparted a massive amount of spin on drives leading to a ball flight that resembled a 747 dipping a wing to the right.

In the past few years I've worked hard to take the hockey out of my swing :)

I played in college. I was a lefty though and hit golf righty. I had to sweep more in golf otherwise I'd start hitting snapshots with the golf ball.

Now I play racquetball. It evens out the pain in my shoulders after I get done with a round.

My uncle plays Racquetball. He hit the longest drive I've personally ever seen (350) and the snappiest hook I've ever seen (3 holes right) within 5 shots of each other.

I've never been particularly athletic, although I played some basketball and other team sports when I was a kid.  I was fairly tall and could rebound and foul, so I usually rode the bench until the 4th quarter - lol

Golf is really the only sport I've ever been passionate about, and I'lll probably always have more enthusiasm than talent, but I'm good with that ;)

I'm the opposite, right handed but played hockey lefty.  I also played in college.

I tried putting lefty for a bit two seasons ago thinking I played hockey lefty so maybe something would translate...it didn't :)

Ah. I'm actually a righty in just about everything. However, I played hockey lefty, but actually putt that way too.

I have putted lefty since I probably was 10-11. I have no idea how it came to be, other than mini golf.

I wrestled for 10+ years growing up and I would say it helped in no way at all with the golf swing. Possibly it is the cause of every horrible instinct I have when it comes to hitting a ball. On the flip side, I have tended to shoot my best scores in the tourneys/competitions. So there may have been a benefit when it comes to competing in an individual(not team) sport. Also, I feel there is certainly a benefit from wrestling in understanding how to manage weight and stay fit as an adult which helps in golf.

I would say coming to golf late in life after competing in three other sports (assuming we count bodybuilding as a sport haha) that I find they've had a bit of a negative impact on my game. Mostly because in just about every other sport putting forth more effort helps. Not really true in golf, right? Swinging harder, "bearing down", and all the rest just make the damn game harder.

That said, the hand eye coordination is huge, as is having a fit body. So I suppose it's a wash?

I play on 2 slo-pitch teams, and the swinging of the bat has hindered my golf swing alot over the years.  In fact I'm not going to play ball at all this year due to that.

I'm not sure if poker is considered a sport, but I've learned a tremendous amount of things that benefits golf.  In 2007 I decided I wanted to be good at poker and after 100's of hours reading books and practising daily, my skills improved greatly, at one point I was rated 300th in the world by Official Poker Rankings, and I was rated higher than 99.99% of others ranked on the site.  The bad beat is the most noteable, as in poker you need the ability to move on after a bad beat, and be able to make informed decisions in the next few hands (not go on tilt).  All the zen golf stuff I've been doing over the past year also goes hand in hand with both sports.  You just can't let things faze you, you just have to calmly move on and stick with your plan.  Just like poker stick with what you know.  its not a good idea to try win back all the money you lost on a poker hand in the next few hands, just like in golf if you drop a stroke or 2, don't try get it all back in a few holes, just stick to your game plan.

Now I've decided I will be good at golf, and 100's of hours later, I'm better going from 100-110 to 90's to low 80's in 2 summers.  I know I have along ways to go, but I'll get there. I've pretty much self improved myself the last couple summers, but this summer I'll be taking lessons weekly.
