Justin Hicks Ball Change

Just a quick little tidbit for ya - Justin Hicks quit his ball sponsor contract (Titleist ProV1X) on Monday in favor of the Bridgestone Golf B330. The interesting part - Hicks doesn't have a contract with Bridgestone Golf.

It's really interesting to me when players opt away from the money for what we can only assume is performing better for him. He certainly had a good round yesterday at Pebble Beach - with an 8-under 64 and tied for 2nd overnight.

Its nice to see that for some golfers its NOT all about the money. They want to win and will do what they feel is necessary to do so.

I'm a little surprised that there's really that much difference between balls - but I guess for the Pros they operate in a different world in terms of the smallest advantages in performance gains and/or feel.

I doubt that anyone on Tour is playing equipment solely because of the contract offer that they were made - performance has to play a major part in it as well. But is anyone aware of others on Tour who are playing equipment solely because it works for them - without a contract to do so?

I think there are quite a few.   I believe that McDowell and Snedeker both don't have complete bag contracts and that they are free to choose some of their clubs based on preference alone.   And as it turns out they have very mixed bags with 4 different brands in the bag for Sneds and 5 for McDowell.

I know Sneds has an older TMAG driver I forget which model but he has had it for some time. I know Freddie Couples still carries an old square Nike 3 wood and can knock the crap out of it!

Plenty of players have a club or two that's not from their sponsors, in the main a fairway or hybrid.

I don't think any decent sponsor worries unless it's their flagship player like Rory. Obviously they aren't so keen if the player is using someone else's driver or putter.

Rest in peace long sticks - I'll remember you

Ryan Moore doesn't play with many sponsors...the most he's really had is a ball sponsor.

I think there's a huge difference between the B330 and the Pro VIx. The B330 launches much lower, I suspect it would be a better fit for lots of player characteristics. I can play with the Pro Vix, not so much with the B330, it doesn't fit with my swing speed. The B330 RX works for me, I noticed that a recent LPGA winner was playing that ball.

Rev I noticed in the press that Stacy Lewis has switched from the Pro v to the Bridgestone B-330. As far as equipment she is still with Mizuno and they don't market balls so there you go. I have not tried the RX but I may since you stated you use it because like you have pointed out before our games seem simular

I forgot about Stacy although I believe she is playing the B330 not the RX. This was a recent winner on the LPGA who is playing the RX.

I have to say that the first iteration of the RX did little for me. Just shows that if an OEM is willing to stick with a concept and develope it rather than blowing with the wind they can move forward. Bridgestone has now had the B330 330s and the RXs through 3 cycles.

Of course with balls it's easy enough because you have to be patient if you are really going to crack the Titleist junta.

I'm sure having a dog club or iron set is another matter.
