RookieBlue7
Well, it's official... We're becoming parents again... We're going to pick our little guy up on Saturday. Driving to Nashville to get him as that's the half way point between us and where he's at in Indiana. Everyone, meet Hines "Chubb" Walker Evans. My son picked out Chubb for his name (after Nick Chubb)... Oh, you all thought it was an actual child? Nah, we're getting an English bulldog. markb
I've owned three and all had major health issues. What can you expect from a breed that cannot be born naturally? All come into the world via c-section and cost a fortune from birth to grave. But there is no breed on earth with a better disposition. Literally. It's as if they come in knowing, "Okay, I'm gonna need this human's help just to stay on earth, so I'm gonna treat him and all his kin as if they are GODS." You can't help but love them in spite of the drool, the shedding and the tendency to smell bulldoggier than other breeds, even after frequent baths. They don't have to have a C-section. But if you opt to go natural you have to be there to help the mom. Lady I work with breeds them as well (hers are too old now to have litters or I'd have gotten one from her). Her dams had 3-5 litters each and not one had a C-section. And they all lived between 9 and 13 years. The determining factor is if your dam has a narrow pelvis or if the pups have small or large heads. Hula Rock
Question for those with English Bulldogs. Any major issues with health problems as we were set to adopt a puppy a few months back and my wife talked me out of it. I know that they are sweet loving dogs and someday I will have one join our family just concerned about health issues. First, Kudos for going with the Adoption route. There are plenty of animals that need /deserve a good home. I own, foster, and spend a great deal of time with bulldog rescues. I always tell people that who are looking to own a bulldog "be prepared". Some of the common health issues with english bulldogs are cherry eye, skin problems, and breathing problems. I hate to say it, but Hip Dysplasia and ACL tears are also commom. For example: My 11 year old bully had Cherry eye, which had to be sewn back in place. Tore is ACL, and because of breathing problems he contracted Pneumonia which meant additional days at the vet post surgery. Tore his other ACL last year, the list goes on. Not to mention Medications, ear infections, yeast infections, etc........ Did I talk you out of one yet????? hahahahaha It's a great breed just takes some work..... RookieBlue7
I've ordered nearly a ton of stuff for him to be prepared when he gets here. Got a wire kennel for at night, an orthopedic bed for him, Royal Canin Bulldog puppy food, about 10 toys I think, stainless flat side and bottom food and water dishes and a mat for them to sit on until he gets big enough for an elevated feeder I'll build, his UGA leather collar and a few other things... We're as ready as we're gonna get other than putting the gates back up to section the kitchen off from him.
