Then vs. Now

Recommended Posts

Looks like another boring day stuck indoors when a man should be out on a golf course somewhere. I thought it might be fun to show you guys one of my old persimmon drivers. I'll bet some of you have a few of these old warriors laying around somewhere. This particular one is my H-B Louisville. I bought this club one spring afternoon in 1976. I was 21 years old then and had a pretty sorry set of clubs which didn't even include a driver. I walked into the muni Pro Shop to pay my green fee and noticed they had a large trash can stuffed with used clubs. Hmmm? I rummaged around in the can for a minute or two and found the H-B. It was pretty beat-up and ugly but I bought it anyway. Probably didn't pay but a few dollars for it. Later on sometime a friend of mine told me his Dad did club refinishing so I took it two him and the pictures below are what I got. I think he charged me $20. I played this club successfully for a lot of years until sometime in the 80's when metal drivers came along. Just for comparison I took a few photos of the Louisville persimmon next to my SLDR. In one of the photos (especially you younger guys) you'll understand where the term “hitting it in the screws” came from.  I always liked the face inserts used back then. Some were more decorative than others. This particular persimmon driver has the shaft bored-thru the head to the sole. A small screw is set at the back of the hosel near the sole and driven into the shaft.  Whipping secures everything in place. Anyone else got a club to show off?

Yep I have the 4 wood that matches it that I gamed until 2003 no joke. I did not switch to metals until 03 or so. I actually still play that wood in my vintage gamer set (note on my profile) I still have lots of persimmon woods from a 1950 Macgregor to my mid 90s Toney Penna model 59 driver

My dad still plays with a persimmon. He uses like a 3 wood and hits it low about 200 yards out.

There's nothing like the sound of a purer wood shot. That thwack gets heads turning all the time.
