Edel Fittings

Severtheties

Recommended Posts

So Mr_Theoo and I caught wind of a brand new Golf Galaxy opening up here in good ol' Ohio. Since its still like 2* outside (I saw 50* for the forecast next week!) there wasn't much else to do so we decided to go check it out. Mr_Theoo will have more info on the store and some of the other things we tested.

It's funny that any of this happened today. Theoo and I met up for breakfast before we went to Golf Galaxy and most of our conversation revolved around the putter that xMassacrex recently bought and posted from Edel and how we wished there was an Edel fitter closer to us because we both loved the look and the story behind xMassacrex's putter. I'm also in the market for new wedges and really wanted to try the Edel wedges too. I know that Edel has been getting a lot of coverage on MSG lately and after my experience today I think they 100% deserve every bit of it they are getting.

So we show up and Theoo was talking about the putting green he had heard of and that it was huge so we start wandering over in that direction. In the distance I see a very nice display with the word Edel on the side. I look at Theoo and ask him if he sees what I see. (He didn't. I swear I had to point it out to him about 3 times before he finally saw it.)

So in our excitement we head over there to check it out.

We were met by a gentleman who had an Edel shirt on who smiled and introduced himself. His name was Bobby Dean. So we start talking to him (at this point the display was still buttoned up) about putters and mentioned xMassacrex's and he knew exactly what we were talking about.

Side note – I starting talking to him about xMassacrex's story and he said that the person who posted it was really not supposed. I mentioned how cool I thought it was that xMassacrex saw his putter, thought how he wished it was his, only to find out that it was.

A little about Bobby directly from the Edel website:

Bobby Dean

Director of Business Development

Bobby took up the game of golf at a very early age in West Texas. He began his career in golf in 2002 by studying under Golf Magazine Top 100 Instructor and Golf Digest Top 10 Teacher Chuck Cook at Barton Creek Resort and Spa in Austin, Texas. Bobby was recruited by Edel Golf for his expertise in instruction, club fitting, and club design. Bobby became an Edel Certified Fitter in November 2004 and has since trained and developed over 90% of Edel's fitting and sales accounts worldwide. Bobby continues to play the lead domestic and international business development role at Edel in addition to serving as head club fitter and overseeing the training and development of new Edel Certified Fitters across the U.S. and the world.

Anyways – after talking for a little while he asks if we'd like to get fit. Uhh yes please!

Theoo was up first. I took him a total of about 20 minutes to fit him. They look at many components while fitting. The first thing Bobby did was have Theoo grab a putter that was a close comparison to the one he games. He puts a mirror on the face of it and has him line up facing a green laser as in the picture below. The laser reflects off the putter face onto the black backdrop to show where you're aiming at alignment. From there he adjusts the actual putter head type, the lie angle, the hosel, the offset, etc. Once he has the laser directly in the center of the backdrop its time to weight the putter. To do this Bobby had him hit a string that he had laid out and the goal was the stop the ball at the string. When everything is said and done he gives you your measurements and you are free to order from them. It's a very cool process.

Bobby did the same thing for me although it took him about 30 minutes to fit me. I was apparently more difficult.  I haven't felt a putter like that ever (granted I've never been fit).

However, that's not where the fun ended. We also told him that we had always wanted to hit the wedges but same story, because there isn't anywhere close we couldn't. Luckily for us, he brought a few along just incase anyone inquired. He took about 20 minutes or so with us on the range to help us figure out the grind we should be looking at based on our swings.

I have to say that I'm in love with the putter and I will (once the funds are in place) invest in an Edel putter sometime soon, however, the wedges are what really won me over. I've hit all sorts of wedges but I've never hit a wedge that felt as crisp and right as this. I'm a very steep player so I tend to take beaver pelts with most of my wedges. I also have a tendency to chunk my wedges quite a bit as well.  He put me into the digger grind and oh man that thing is amazing. I can't wait to purchase a few wedges from them as well.

It was a very eventful day and I will say that Bobby from Edel is an absolute gentleman and a scholar. If you ever get the chance to work with him at all you will not be disappointed. I will also say that if you are in the market for a putter or a wedge anytime to try and find a fitter. If you have to drive I'd even say that its worth it at this point. I'm really not trying to sound like a homer but everything they do and put they name on is really top notch.

The only thing we weren't able to hit were the irons. We're trying to talk Bobby into bringing them back to Columbus at some point but we'll see if that happens. If they are anything like what I hit today I have to image that they are awesome!

YES! They're addicting. The entire experience. I've been in sales all my life and in my opinion the art of "sales" and "customer service" have long been dead. I will say thought that Edel really seems to have a good grasp on both. While a lot of people I know wouldn't consider spending $400-$500 or more on a putter I do believe that if they had something like this they would.

I'm so happy to hear about your experience!

It's so funny because reading through your article, something that the guys at Edel told me popped into my head that I forgot to add to my thread!

So their head wedge guy over there runs the social media site, and apparently Rob told him NOT to post any pictures of my putter because it's a surprise, and to his dismay refreshed his Instagram and saw the picture on there by mistake. Ironically enough it went down where I had no clue (but saw the picture and hoped it was mine) just another thing that brings these people down to earth and adds to the memories.

I have to say, it's pretty damn cool to hear this dude from their company was familiar with the situation. It just shows they care about what's happening.

Anyways, the beautiful thing about this whole write up that so many people gloss over is the consistency in what they do. Do some reading, try and find Edel fitting reviews on any site over the last five years or so and consistently you hear the same happy stories, and the same process over and over. Ensuring a proper fit is a huge part.

It's also damn cool you guys got to meet their head fitter. How badass is it to know you had this guru fitting you for your next putters? Gotta be pretty cool I'd say!

Anyway, it's very ironic as well that you mentioned your swing style and the corresponding grind. Did he happen to go into bounce with you at all and cover the experience and what you'll feel when you find the right club? Or take you through a whole wedge fitting? I would love for people to know what really happens. Because getting to experience that, is just simply amazing.

How ironic we'd both be in sales? And it's funny that I connect so we'll with a brand that encompasses those ideas when in my day to day profession that's what I also try to present to the customer. Experience. Customer service. Positivity. That's how you sell and make people happy. I've never thought of that before!

But consider this, I know $400 is a lot of money. But think about how much is wrapped into a Scotty Cameron plus fitting? We are in the same category and you get a much higher level of customization with Edel...

Bobby was awesome. Very down to earth and I think this goes without saying, knew his stuff.

The wedge fitting wasn't a complete wedge fitting per say. He watched us hit a few shots each and quickly came to a conclusion on what we need. Not that this was surprising with his resume. He told us the difference about all the grinds and bounces and why the ones we liked worked for us. He's also honest as heck. At one point Theoo said he liked a different grind than what Bobby recommend and his immediate reaction was "yeah, thats because it feels "normal" to you but it doesn't mean its right."

After hitting that grind for a little while longer I think its save to say that Theoo was sold. I'm still blown away by the feel i got with the different grind. I hit my irons very well and have struggled for a while with my wedges and now I completely understand why. Theoo was hitting the 60* on average of 100 yards.............

Bobby was telling us that he has gained almost 2 clubs with the irons. Most peoples thought would be that they are lofted down but its actually the opposite.....I can't wait to hit these.

I agree with the price. PLUS think about how many putters a lot of players go through trying to find the "right one." I'd venture a guess and say that its well over the $500 mark that you could spend on one putter and potentially play that putter forever.

I like the look of the Ping's and I'm sure they're good putters. The only thing you didn't get was the service from start to finish. Thats where the real money is as! Plus - who couldn't resist letting a creative person like Shannon at Edel go crazy and make you something one of a kind.

I think I mentioned in my original write up and I'm trying not to be a homer. But the more I think about this stuff and read other peoples experiences I am. I'm a homer. Haha

Its worth the drive. As xMassacrex mentioned the fitting process is the same thing from each of their fitters. They are all trained by Mr. Edel himself and are held to a very high standard.

I'm getting a 60* at least. My short game is a huge hole in my game right now and to have a wedge that I feel 100% confident in always a plus. The thing that sold me was being able to hit a flop off the tight lie of the mats. I can never do that with my current wedges.

Jbill,

Check my thread out in the putter section. The top contender for me besides the Edel was a Ketsch. I really considered it, but due to all of the variables the Edel takes into consideration, and best of all the confidence it gave me it was the best choice.

Wbealsd,

please do yourself a favor and give that fitter a call! Powerball or no, these things are worth checking out.

But what I really want to talk about is the wedge fitting. severtheties, you alluded to it but it sounds like you went through a rough fitting for the system. It's really quite amazing to go through it, and when it comes time to pull the trigger on a new wedge, do yourself a favor and please go back and go through it. So worth it.

That's what I hope more people can do in this forum. Give these guys a chance. You see a wedge or putter thread all of the time asking for recommendations, and NO ONE throws out Edel. It blows my mind. I honestly wouldn't consider another brand for my next ones because of the fitting.

Edit: Theoo,

Isn't that awesome? I'm not a superhero on the course, and honestly I have distance I could gain. But being able to hit these things consistently two clubs longer that your last wedges, and to have to control to flight it/shorten the yardages is amazing. Wedges are about control, and these provide a top notch level of that.

Yes the customization is awesome, but it's all about the fit. If you are fit properly for your clubs you can maximize your abilities. And no matter your skill level who doesn't want to do that?

Well that should be an absolute blast!

Do yourself a favor, trust what the dude says and roll with it. When I went for my fitting he said some things that I just thought were a little unrealistic, and then realized during the process he wasn't lying.

They are some of the coolest fittings I've ever been a part of. And I've done a number of fittings at this point. I just love their system!

So, I had never even heard of Edel before (and I read a lot of golf stuff).  So, I searched this forum for some info and input from people who have or tried their stuff.  Other than today's, only one topic back in 2011 on the wedges.  If they're so good, why no reviews, feedback, discussion of them?  Certainly sound interesting from their website.

Nonchalant putts count the same as chalant putts.

My guess is lack of fitting and demo options. For me to get fitted I'll have to drive 3 hours to Toledo. Before this wouldn't have seemed worth it but after yesterday its a no brainer

I'd have to agree with Theoo. You can but wouldn't really want to buy a putter or really anything of theirs without being fit for it and with there being very few filters in the scheme of things that can be hard.

Not to beat a dead horse here but as Theoo also stated - after our experience yesterday I think it's a no brained that if you have the option to check these guys out and get fit that you should do it.

I have to echo what the other guys have said.

Having been through a fitting for their wedges, gaming the wedges last season, and now being fit for a putter and putting it into play this coming season I have some decent experience with the company.

To be honest with you, their lack of exposure is one of the most mind blowing things I've come across being on this forum, and ghosting around others online. It doesn't make any sense to me.

I know it sounds like three guys who've "drunk the koolaid" in here, but once you go through one of these fittings and actually look at the science on what they are doing, it makes sense to consider these guys.

Actually, once you understand the reasoning for what they do, you'll wonder how you can consider another brand. Honestly, I wouldn't game another set of wedges or putter because of how they do their fittings. The high bounce options are something you won't find in another brand, and when you consider that plus the customization options and being able to support a smaller company, it's a no brainder.

I'd be happy to answer any questions you have to the best of my abilities.
