revkev
The swirling wind led to some curious shots. It was calm when we got there around 9, then it was as if someone shifted a switch on around 11, then it kept shifted here, there and every where in the afternoon until it laid down toward the end of the day. We camped out between the 4th green (a par 3) and the 5th tee, a monster par 5 for an hour or so while that fist transition occurred. It's was something to see and feel. Barnes was in the second group off of 5 after the wind came up. It's 605, you drive over a pond (non factor for them) to a fairway that's pinched by a bunker left (not a bad spot) and a bunker right that's 280 off the tee (very bad because of over hanging tree limbs). It's straight up hill after the bunkers and then straight down hill to the pin with two trees in the middle of the fairway over the top of the hill at about130 from the green. It's a tough hole for them if they miss the fairway, particularly if they miss in the trees or the right bunker. As soon as the wind came up they lost the ability to hit it past the bunkers and so most started hitting 3 wood off the tee - 3 wood, 3 wood to 100 was the plan. Barnes made the switch just like the group in front of him and his fellow competitors but you could see he wasn't comfortable. What ensued was the wildest pull hook I've ever seen - I couldn't tell if he hit trees in the woods or flew the trees and ended up in the 6th fairway - regardless it led to a 7 on a par 5 without a penalty stroke. The other crazy shot that I saw was Jordan Spieth hitting it in the water with a 5 iron when the water wasn't close to being a play under ordinary circumstances. He was in that middle part of the afternoon when the wind was dying, I think he aimed it right of where he needed to be, probably felt the wind die, laid off it a bit and that as they say was that. I also saw lots of great shots particularly when we made our way over to 1 - lots of balls on the green in 2, it may look easy on TV but from the fairway its uphill to a green guarded by trees and a bunker right and heavy rough and a bunker left. The only way to get it on the green is a high cut. Last observation is that the greens are heavily over seeded, I've never seen greens for a tour event so soft and slow without a serious amount of rain. They are perfect but they are shaggy. Having played there before I was shocked at how slow they were running. I understand that they are closing the course after the tournament and putting in new greens. That's sad because Copperhead was the last course on tour with old school Bermuda. revkev
I was primarily watching hoops, Badgers and Huskies . Nice of the Tour to go OT so I could see it.
