Central Texas shootout.....

Bogey in The Woods

Recommended Posts

So I am in no position to call for the Texas Open 2015. However, with all the recent posts back and forth in and amungst us, I feel perfectly in a position to suggest a weekend shindig.

I know there are a ton of great courses in Austin and San Antonio that we could decide on to fit play styles and finances.

The weather is finally looking favorable, and I think there would be no time like the present. If we can get an idea of interest and schedules, I woukd be happy to run point on setting up a deal with whatever course is decided on.

So what do you think?

I'd possibly consider it. I have two "Hill Country" dates coming up already. A driver fitting in Kerrville and then on to Austin the 27th of March. Then on April 24-25 me an a few buddies are playing Horseshoe Bay. I would be unable to play your Texas Open during those dates. The Austin/SA area is a 5 or 6 hour drive for me. Have you considered a more central location? Abilene? Diamond Back, Fairway Oaks. There's many good courses around Weatherford too. Sugar Tree, Split Creek, etc. Just a suggestion.

The population center of Texas is in the Killeen/Temple/Ft. Hood area, there's a few cool courses around there and it's day trip doable for San Antonio, Houston, DFW and Austin. Abilne on the other hand is in the middle of nowhere, literally.

Most weekends in April/May work for me.  I'd prefer Austin / San Antonio or Houston.  There are 3-4 of us in Houston and the same in the San Antonio / Austin area I believe.

I am open to any and all. I tried to edit this thread to add a poll, but either I am not smart enough or it cant be done (smart money is on the first one). So I will keep an informal list of the votes. For counting purposes, so far I have votes for:

Abilene

Austin/San Antonio

Houston

Killeen/Ft Hood/Temple ( I have made inquiries about getting us on the Courses at Clear Creek if this should win the vote.)

Weatherford

So lets hear it gang, What course do we wish to bring down our wrath upon?

I must admit I almost feel sorry for whatever course wins. All I can picture in my mind is the Caddy/Pool seen in Caddyshack. Replace the caddies with MyGolfSpy-ers and the pool with whatever course wins (loses?) the vote.

I'd vote for SugarTree up by Weatherford. Actually it's a little south and west of Ft. Worth.

From Austin it's about 193 miles or 3:14 hrs. I live in Midland. It's 268 Miles or 3:50 hrs. I'd personally opt for more than one round. Perhaps a Friday and Saturday round.

I vote Aye.

I don't care where I have to drive, as long as the course is reasonably priced. What I mean is it does not really matter if I have to drive 3 hours or 5 hours the difference in fuel prices for that can easily be eaten up in Green Fees.

Oh, and speaking of Precision Golf in Kerrville, let me know how it goes. I walked into his shop a couple days ago and got a 15 minute talk about how he does things. He then went on to express his lukewarm feelings for the work done by the SATX fitters at MK Technologies.

I'd consider using him too if I had a personal rec from someone.

I am watching more for the dates; it has to fit in my schedule, butI am staying out of the course selection.  The course doesn't matter to me because I have only played in Amarillo, but to be fair, I think it should be a course that is generally unfamiliar to everyone.  No home games.

Glad you chimed in. Everytime I post, I keep intendingg to invite non-Texans. This is, in fact, for anyone who wants to come and raise hell with the rest if us.

I have another suggestion. Why not plan on later in the summer or fall. (or maybe next year sometime) That gives many people time to plan and budget if necessary. Pick your courses and dates. I can tell you from planning and putting together past golf trips it's not as easy it seems. Hell, I have a hard time getting 8 guys to comment to a weekend trip that's coming up in April. And these are all local guys. Just depends what you really want to do. For a spur of the moment thing you might want to stick with guys in your neighborhood. Ya know?

Currently I have 4 golf trips planned for this season. So far. April at Horseshoe bay, May - Santa Fe, NM, Sept - East Texas, Oct - Hot Springs Village. And that doesn't include perhaps 2 local tournaments.

FYI Example: We're doing our HSB outing over an extended weekend. 3 rounds of golf and 2 nights at the resort hotel for $402.80/man.

I've played Bandit a couple of times. It's a fun course.

As for this year I think I'm going to have to bow out. If you start something for next year I might try to get in on it. Hopefully it'd be for more than one round. I'm not much of one to travel 4-5-6 hours or more for only 18 holes.

Echoing what Hla said, if anyone wants to lay in the area on a weekend just let us know. I'm itching to play. My boy is 3 months old and I haven't played in 4 haha!

Edit: as for area courses, there's a couple of city owns tracks that are decent, Avery Ranch is always great. ShadowGlen just east of Austin in Manor looks good each time I drive by when visiting friends. Star Ranch in Hutto is also a nice course, and if you want pricey there's always WolfDancer.

I agree whole heartedly. Have played all of those courses. Would gladly play them again. Shadowglen is as great as it looks. Probably the best kept greens in the area (second to Wolfdnacer).  For those of us with......lets just call it wandering ball syndrome (hook/slice), Starr Ranch is a really wide open course thats kept pretty nice as well.

So I do , in fact, agree with what PlaidJacket said. I really think we should plan a big group get together. We all know that not everyone will be happy, regardless of the selected course. I also agree that it should be a multiple round get together. Personally, I see a three day weekend outing, with tournament style foursomes. 54 holes of golf anyone? So if that type of event is not conceivable for this summer/fall, so be it. Next year isnt that far off.

As for local guys: I would love to have a group of us get together whenever and play. Since leaving the military, I work in a mostly blue collar crowd that doesnt do a lot of golfing. So mostly, my playing partners are my wife, my brother, or an old coworker. I would like to broaden  my group.

So I guess I should have originally entitled this thread: Would someone please take pity, and play some golf with Bogey?

I'm pretty much available any weekend. Week days are usually a no go for me.

Can't ever please everyone.  I trust Hula & TXST.  Pick a date, pick a course.  Those who can and want to....will be there. In the end playing together is what's remembered. Where and when are forgettable details.

Although I DO remember last years weather.....ugggg.

Canyon Springs. They don't want to cancel. We're pushing them to cancel. It's great fun.
