Tmag SLDR that makes rattling noise only with full swing?

Recommended Posts

Ok I wasn't sure where to post this. I recently bought an 8* SLDR head off eBay for hoing purposes and it looked pretty good. I borrowed a buddies spare shaft for his jetspeed so I could try It out before my adapter gets here. I put the shaft in At the course and take a few dry swings. When swung at close to full speed there is a rattling sound in the club head. I can't get it to make the sound unless I am taking a full swing. I've checked and the weights and everything are tight. Any idea what this is? I'm going to send it to Tmag to get checked out. If it weren't adjustable I would say it's a piece of adhesive that came off in the club head but obviously that isn't it. Any ideas?

Is the rattle in the head or at the end of the shaft?

Also check the toe plate and make sure it isn't loose.

I can't tell the exact place of where the noise is coming from. The sliding weight on the bottom is tight and I've tried to tweak and shake the Hell out of it and I can't get anything to make noise. I take it outside and make a full swing and it rattles again. -_- I am becoming very frustrated

Don't know thought at first it could be a piece of fused weld slag but then again you said the noise only occurs when you hit a ball. I do know that when I was at a TMAG demo the slider screw on the bottom kept coming loose. I am not no Hercules swinger any more so it should not have kept coming loose but it did. I do know if I ever end up with one when I get it set the set screw will be set with at least green Loctite. If you find out please let me know because you have gotten my curiosity up

Maybe it's a bit of epoxy rattling around in the shaft?

I don't have to hit a ball for it to rattle, just make a full swing. It's strange and driving me crazy because I've tried to get it to rattle without going outside to swing it an no noise. I take it outside and it rattles the first full swing I take.

Its a very metallic sound so I don't think it's the shaft. And if it were it would be at the very end close to the head.

Ok I would think I were losing my mind if my buddies hadn't heard it rattling as well but I just walked outside to swing it for the 10th time today and it has stopped making the noise and I have no idea why. I'm gonna take it to the range and see If I can get it to make the noise anymore. This is very strange. I'm debating sending it to Tmag even if it has stopped.

I would consider trying a different shaft in it, just to narrow down the possibilities and confirm it is the head.  Did you check the little toe plate (the one at the end of the sliding weight track) just to make sure it wasn't loose?  The tour issue ones have a screw in that now, but the older retail heads don't.  Another possibility is the SLDR badge on the sole.  Some can start to peal up and maybe it got very loose?

Other than that it's either in the very end of the shaft or something inside the head is loose.  You can also take the shaft off, hold it vertical and drop it on the grip a few times.  It could have been a piece of glue at the end that was loose and then got wedges tighter when you were swinging.  Bouncing it a couple times might knock it loose again if that was the issue.

Also was it a stock head, any chance hotmelt was added at any point?

I've removed that shaft and tried it with another head so I don't think it's that because it's never done it before. I can't get the toe plate to move but it is one without a screw so it could be loose I suppose. There is the slightest ding in the SLDR badge so that could be it. The head is used so I am not sure if the previous owner used hotmelt or not. I hit balls on the range with it Monday and the rattling has stopped for some reason. I'm not sure if the badge readhered itself or what happened but I am still confused so this thing will be getting sent off to Tmag for further inspection. Hopefully they can give me a better answer. I think it has to be one of the things you suggested hickmeyer or a piece of the inside or the head has broken off and gotten stuck somewhere and now won't rattle anymore.

Will do! Hopefully Tmag just replaces it. I don't like the idea of something rattling around inside the head.

The head will have a little rat glue in it from the factory, just about all of them do. Hit it with a hair dryer for about a minute to warm it up, shake the entire head several times until it cools off to the touch. If there's something inside the head, it'll catch it.

If you're handy, you can install a screw in the toe plate. The hole is there and threaded. If it's something you want to try, shoot me a pm with your address and I'll send you the screw. You'll just have to drill a hole in the toe plate. I may have a toe plate already drilled. I'll look when I get home. If i do, I'll send it to you if you want and you can just send me the one that's not drilled when you get it
