Cleveland Wedge Analyzer

So I got an email announcement this morning from Cleveland Golf about their new Wedge Analyzer fitting program.

 

 

There are obviously limitations to it - i.e. its only going to spit out recommendations for Cleveland wedges and I don't know enough about the SwingByte to have a good idea of how accurate this is, but my guess is the majority don't know what bounce/lofts they should be playing in their wedges, so this is a good start for getting an idea - even if then you go and purchase a different wedge brand. Thoughts?

I consider myself an educated golfer, but I'll admit, I'm completely dumb when it comes to knowing what bounce I should be playing.

I don't know if that's really a good idea.  As a "senior," when I hear the term GI I don't necessarily think "Game Improvement."

That's me too and one of the reasons I like the SCORs and their v-sole.  Seems to work pretty well from just about anywhere and I can just keep being dumb.

After hitting the edel wedges a few weeks ago I now know I need to take a serious look at my wedges before I buy any other clubs. I waste and lose too many shots cause of my short game. I may have to try this tomorrow when I go in for my lesson.

Wide ranging philosophies when it comes to fitting wedges. 

 

Generally speaking, bounce is your friend. That's why you're starting to see higher bounce wedges in more lineups. Edel has been doing it for years, and the new PING glide stuff has some higher bounce options as well.

 

While most companies are really only starting to make a push to educate the golfer on bounce, PING has started to talk about fitting based on sole width. Obviously with any wedge ground conditions come in to play (softer conditions = play more bounce), but the general rule of thumb is the steeper your angle of attack, the more bounce you need. It's the old digger/driver/slider thing that Scratch used.

 

For PING it's basically the steeper your AoA, the wider sole you should play. Now that said, you can't discount versatility. You need to find the bounce/width/grind combination that allows you to play the type of shots you play with each given wedge.

 

It's this universality that plays into the SCOR V-Sole, as well as Renegar's sole grind. Bob Renegar is one of my favorite guys to talk to, and his philosophy is your wedge should allow you to play whatever the course throws at you. Your lie doesn't care if you're a digger or slider.

I use higher bounce in my wedges because it was my understanding that higher bounce is better in softer bunkers?

I have 3 wedges... I 60 58 and 52. All three have different bounces... one is primarily a short game wedge for use around the green and bunkers. The other two are full length shot clubs. I've gotten pretty decent at knowing distances, just wish I can actually be consistent.
