In an thread that I started a few weeks back I mentioned that my teacher currently has me working on my grip.  This thread comes from a personal observation so bear with me.  I hit the ball great on the range yesterday.  Frankly its been several years since I had such a good session.  I took very little time to get warm (the weather is perfect which always helps) and shot after shot I had control over my ball flight despite us being on a part of the range that was noticeably sloped down hill to the target.

Today I was teaching Bible Study for a senior group and my normal practice is to have them read through the text out loud that we will work on.  During the reading I will stand on one leg alternately (something that my chiropractor recommends.)  I had rock solid balance on either leg for as long as I wanted to stand on it.  In fact I started on my left leg which is often a bit of a problem for me and I was so stable that I thought I had started on the right.

I think that the two things are inter related - the fact that my balance is very stable right now is related to my exceptional (for me) ball striking yesterday on the range.

Do any of you work on your balance and if so what do you do?  Besides the Flamingo stance I've been working lots with my balance ball of late.

I have terrible balance.  It is probably the most common of my many faults and is likely the cause of poor ball striking days.  I find that I can still hit the ball straight without maintaining balance, but my miss is distance.  Not solid contact.  I am glad you brought this up.  Maybe now I can finally motivate myself to work on it.

I for one have always had terrible balance even when I was young. Now it is worse because of a pin in my ankle and being big. I tend to do the foot shuffle like Patrick Reed does. that is one of the reasons why I wear either the Chucky Taylor Converse or flat bottom skateboard shoes to play in. The high tops help support my ankles and the absolute flat bottoms help my balance

Have either of you ever tried the Gary Player walk through while practicing?

I seem to have an frequent issue with getting out on toes too much which defiantly creates a balance issue. Just the other night I caught myself too much on the toes and settled back into a more centered position. Man did that improve my ball striking. Poor Balance is not an issue with me except when I create it.

Izzo Balance Discs.

Awhile back, when I played college golf, we used to do a lot of conditioning work. One of the things I loved, because it was so difficult for me, was any work on the balance discs. We would use two blue balance discs that were made by Izzo Golf. Making imitation swings while holding a medicine ball, weighted club, or hitting balls while standing on these is extremely difficult! I still have two of the discs and also have a balance board. The best part about the discs is that you can feel exactly where your weight is at all points of your golf swing.

What size are the Izzo Balance Discs?  I can't find that brand available and all the ones I see on Amazon appear to be 14" in diameter.  Is that the correct size?

This sounds like a great (and inexpensive) idea!!

If you can't find those and the step through won't work with your swing type try swinging a club on one leg and then reverse the process. I'd do not hav particularly good balance and so am always working on it. It has life benefits well beyond golf.

I play with a Samoan guy who is REALLY long and he plays in flip-flops with no spikes.   Guy has incredible balance.   In an effort to emulate him, I try to practice in spikeles shoes.   It's tough, but when I finish on an even keel I note that the resulting shots are long and pure.
