70 Yard SCOR

Recommended Posts

No, it's not a 70 yard lob wedge.

It was raining yesterday, so I thought I would stop at the range on my way home and hit a few.  About a third of the way through a small bucket, I hit my 42* SCOR 70 yards; the head, that is.  It did not snap off; just flew off!  Nice and straight though.  It was really embarrassing because I had just been showing the guy next to me the wedges, and telling him how much I liked them.  I had to yell down the range for everyone to stop hitting while I retrieved the head.  Looking at it, there is almost no epoxy in the hosel and very little residual on the shaft.  I cleaned the dirt and grass out of the hosel with just warm water, but haven't touched the shaft.  I can slide the shaft into the hosel fairly easily.

I ordered a 50, 46 and 42 from SCOR last fall, and it seemed that they may have been hastily built to fill the order.  Now I am wondering if the other two wedges will do the same.  One of them (can't remember which one) had the red SCOR grip on upside down so the choke down marks were on the underside.  Didn't matter to me, because I removed them to put on the PUREs to match the rest of my set.  My 54 and 58 have been in my bag for almost 2 years and have had no problems with them.  Poor quality control when transitioning to the Ben Hogan brand??

This is disappointing. I was hoping for you to say that you made an eagle from 70 yards out with a SCOR. I see no valid understandable reason as to why that should happen. I did see it happen last year to a buddy with an older Callaway 8 iron on the course but we had to search a creek to find it.

I regripped my new to me Mizuno JPX800 Pro's last night and noted that they only contained one strip of double sided tape.  Most other grips usually have had at least two pieces of tape.  Does this mean they were made hastily?  I don't think so.   A few years ago the 3 month old Powerbilt graphite shaft on my 9 iron snapped while playing......Does this mean they were made hastily?  I hope not, they instantly replaced the entire set at no cost to me.

What I am trying to say is that sometimes SH%& happens.  As for Edel, I surely hope that the new Hogan's are built well.

Other than letting them know, I don't know what good that will do.  I won't be sending it back.  I will fix it tonight.

Well, my first thought is that they'd offer to fix it for you. But if you're going to handle it yourself that's not an issue.  But any half decent manufacturer would probably want to know if a head on a year old club came flying off and would welcome the chance to make it right.  I work for a manufacturer in the HVAC industry and if one of our products malfunctions, we want to know about it directly.

I ordered them through Barry at SCOR and I have his Ben Hogan email, so I will send him the pics.  I think I will always have it in the back of my mind that the 46 and 50 heads could come off on the next swing.  Debating with myself on whether I should pull them off, or just wait and see if it happens.  My problem is that I always seem to lose.

Personally I would pull them and check and then there will be no doubt. Sometimes mistakes happen after all we are all human and we all make mistakes. Yep I would pull them and glue them myself and then you will be sure.

From what I have experienced that one piece of grip tape is SOP on most mass produced clubs. I can remember about 10 years ago or so Callaway used like some kind of rubber cement on assembling grips. think about it on mass produced products saving a buck here and there= profits

LOL. To me it's always funny when a head flies off. Yes, it's a drag. I've had it happen before too. Kenny, I have to say though... I just love the look of those wedges. I really wanted some but the closest fitter back at the time was at their shop in Victoria, Texas.

Me too, but I gambled on eBay for "new to me" and they arrived in great shape.....only needed to change one grip. The other two came with new GP grips on them.

I have had the experience of 2 other clubs breaking during a swing. In 1992 it was about my second or third trip to the driving range, ever! Didn't have any clubs. Got a bucket of balls and they gave me a Redbird wood of some kind to use. The head snapped off at the hosel and I had to go get it. In 2005 I went to Myrtle Beach with 3 guys from ABQ for 10 courses in 6 days; rained every day and the clubs never dried out. I played the next week at home and snapped my lob wedge at the bottom of the grip. Water had collected around the grip for a week and it rusted through. Not a problem anymore with graphite! :)

I saw an article a few minutes ago on Yahoo sports news. Phil Mickleson actually had a head fly off today at the Valero Texas Open during the stipulated round

Most of us guys here at the beach when our clubs get wet take them out of the bag and literally hang them up to dry making sure the drain hole in the grip is open. I also use a hair dryer. The salt air here is real corrosive anyhow but then again I have seen guys that have clubs that are 10 years old that do not do any maintenance at all and have had no problems. I have seen it happen though with some clubs 20 years old or older

Definitely pull the other heads off.  Use the slow cure epoxy and you'll never have to worry about it.

The 42 is fixed and played with it today. When I cleaned the hosel and shaft tip, I noticed something èlse that wasn't right. The shaft was not aligned the same as the other SCORs; that is the Genius 9 logo was rotated almost 90 clockwise. All the others are aligned perfectly on top. I never noticed it before. I aligned it like the others, then I had to rotate the grip to match. Easy to do with the Pure Grips! So, that makes a mis-aligned shaft, the head came off, and I am pretty sure that this was the club that had the grip on upside down.

I will be pulling the shafts on the 46 and 50 when my schedule quiets down a little. Not going to do the 54 and 58. I have used them a lot for almost 2 years without any issues.
