Golf companies on MGS

Bogey in The Woods

Recommended Posts

So I read the thread where X and Krank had a little give and take about the Krank products. The entire time I was reading, it felt weird. Then it hit me: We have a golf equipment manufacturer as a member on MGS.

To me, the big draw to come to MGS, was the filtering out of propaganda from the big names. maybe I am just looking into this too much. But I did a quick search and saw a member named Callaway Golf. No posts. so no biggie. But Am I reading into this?

MGS is the place where we take pride in the exchange of info and data not influenced by the equipment companies. Is that changing? I realize that if we said that they were not allowed, it would be just as easy for a company to register a member without identifying themselves as a company man.

Does this feel wrong to anyone else?

(I am going to assume Krank will read this. Vinny, nothing against you brothe,r at all. i will suggest that if you are going to make claims in a thread, be ready to back it up all the way with EVERY possible piece of data. The guys here WILL ask for it.)

Honestly - as long as they're not spewing propaganda that seem to bother most people here - I welcome them.

It's nice that manufacturers like Krank and others on here to help and give their own input as well. I agree they should be ready and willing (aside from maybe giving away the secret that they feel gives them an edge of their competition) to share data and facts. And obviously be willing to take both the good and the bad opinions with and open mind.

My 2 cents -- and this opinion is my own - I don't have a problem with a manufacturer belonging to the forum, or even contributing to the forum.  I would think any marketing mumbo-jumbo would be sniffed out pretty quickly by our members.  And I think our members are also savvy enough to pick up on personal vendettas or agendas some  may have against certain OEM's.  We do tend to be self-policing here.

I'd give Krank credit for coming back - they had a pretty rough go here a couple years back, and it wasn't pleasant for them.

Hopefully I can try an address your concern Bogey, although maybe I am not answering exactly what you are asking.  But here goes:

The main purpose of the forum when I launched it was education.  I actually never wanted to start a forum.  Most of the guys I knew on them talked of the horrors that came from them.  The fights, bickering, etc.  I was not a forum guy prior to starting MGS so I just chose not to start one when first launching.  After many readers asked for one I went out and tried to figure out how we could solve the bickering part and the OEM problem too (have not addressed that yet).

So, after consulting with others on other forum both members and advertisers I though I had come up with a solution that recitified this for the members.

I would base this purley on educating the consumer in the forum to the best of our ability with out making a total bore for the members.  What this meant was I was going to allow ANY & ALL golf companies to participate for free on the forums, BUT their posts had to be based on educating the member.  It was part of the moral codes like below:

5. Product Advertising - (PLEASE READ) this is a touchy subject and one not easy to moderate for companies that advertise with any forum. I have thought about this and consulted with many companies about how we can resolve this and make it beneficial for all involved (advertisers & members). The MGS forum wants EVERYONE to feel like they can be a part of this forum and I encourage all companies to take part. In the end it will only make for a better forum and better content for the members. And therefore our forum will not turn away any Non-Advertising companies from posting like other forums do. However...we are sure you understand that it is not to fair to have the exact same posting privileges as a Advertiser on the forum. So we have come up with the following criteria which we feel both encourages both Non-Advertiser educational posting and promotes the Advertisers product promotions.

ADVERTISERS - Will be able to post promotional info, run contests, post both pre-product and current product release photos, display contact info (with banners), provide educational posts, promote coupons and discounts to members and highlight new product releases.

NON-ADVERTISERS - Will be able to post any and all educational type posts and also display contact info in your signature (without banners).

If you read the "NON-ADVERTISER" section this is where I think your concern is addressed.  Therefore Krank and others can come on here but only to the benefit of the reader in those ways.  It's not somewhere for them to come promote and shove stuff down your throat.

This cuts to the chase.  What you find is that they all say they want to come in here but once it is based on simply educating and not promoting, well, unfortunately they all go away.  Vinny pops in from time to time I will give him that.

Problem is it is generally to only address an issue one of the members has had with his product or customer service.  In the vast majority of the members experience with Krank it has not gone well, either service or performance wise which is unfortunate, but you guys come first to me.  So when someone similar to Vinny comes to the forum to talk about his product but in my opinion offers contradictions that otherwise would just be passed over and trusted because they are a manufacturer, I feel it is my duty no matter who the company to address this for the reader.

At the end of the day I would LOVE all of them to be on here helping you guys, but after all these years I realize that not a single one has ever taken us up on the offer.  They all say they will but in the end none do.  Unless it is to promote.

But the goal once again is education, not matter if you are an OEM or a member.  Hope that helps Bogey.

Personally, I don't mind it a bit.  Krank is open about who they are and their posts can be read with as much or as little skepticism as the reader sees fit.

Just a different question X: I know how you are big on not censoring people, what would be the situation where a company has to be told to back off from advertising through their posts without actually advertising with you?

Krank isn't a TaylorMade, Callaway, Titleist or Ping. Not the same.

But Krank are also a registered company that make (amongst other things) golf clubs and associated equipment. They also actively promote their brand and products - so they are the same, depending on your perspective.

For my money, if a company is on hand in forum discussions to put the record straight or answer questions about their own product line, then fair play. True Temper do the same in other forum and they manage to do so without turning it into an infomercial about their products. This is perfectly acceptable IMO.

What is unacceptable is someone pretending to be an independent consumer while blatantly plugging a product from a company they represent - there is a big difference.

Until such time as companies start using the forum to make the usual marketing claims about how their specific product is better than the competition for X reason, then education and enlightenment shall rule.

I don't see any breach so far, but I know it when I see it.

I don't have a problem with the free exchange of data and opinion so consumers can make an informed choice about products, but I do have a problem with companies flouting the generally accepted rules on what is or isn't acceptable in terms of advertising and/or an underlying agenda.

Yes, and I didn't elaborate, but Krank used to be an advertiser here and has had interactions with us in the forum on and off for some time. I didn't mean it like the size of the company determines whether it's ok to participate, but it did sound like that. MGS' position on where ad dollors come from does follow that criteria I believe. Krank can be a sponsor, but not the big boys i.e. That doesn't mean they would be excluded from contributing comments to the forum though. Correct me if I'm wrong about that.
