Ben Hogan Fort Worth 15 clubs

Took my new Hogans to my course at Canyon Springs in San Antonio, TX. Conditions were excellent. The irons came with the KBS Tour 90 shafts, and the blue and red Hogan (Lampkin) grips. Since the grips were not offered in the size I prefer (oversize), I settled for midsize.

When I addressed the ball, I noticed the heads were smaller than my MP-54s. More like blades. And, as I previously mentioned, the grips were smaller than I was used to.   First club out of the bag was my 8-iron. As soon as I hit the ball (ProV1x), it shot, as if laser-guided - high and straight for the pin. Any worries I had about head or grip size were quickly put to rest. The same with the other irons. Breathed a sigh of relief and totally enjoyed my first experience with the Hogans.

The irons are sweet and smooth. Felt great in my hands. I hit the ball as well, if not better, than I did with my 54s, and they (the 54s) are considered a player's club. The feel upon impact was solid. My 54s had KBS C-Tapor Lite shafts on them. That said, I can honestly say I prefer the Hogan-recommended KBS Tour 90s. As far as distance is concerned... I'd say maybe about 7-10 yards longer. However, I think that will improve as soon as I get to the driving range and work with them.

What would I change? Nothing. These clubs are a keeper. Glad I ordered them, and highly recommend them. Bottom line: I am totally confident in my ability to play my best with these irons. Down the line, perhaps, to get a slightly more comfortable feel, I'll probably switch back to my preferred Golf Pride CPS2 grips. Love the feel, and I don't have to wear a glove with them. Everyone has their own preference as far as grips are concerned, and Hogan offers quite a few options when ordering. As a side note, I had no problem adjusting to the loft numbers on the clubs instead of the single digits.

That's about it for now. I'm not the greatest reviewer in the world; just wanted to make it short and simple. Any questions, just let me know.

Okay 2 questions.

1.  The reviews I've heard from guys who have hit these (our Barbajo and someone online) said that these felt like nothing they've ever felt before.  Would you agree?

2.  Solid strikes are solid strikes and I don't think it matters much what club you are using the ball will fly well.  My question is how do they seem on less than solid strikes?  How do they compare to your 54's under that scenario?

Thanks for the review!!!!!

To add the the Rev's questions - how do you find the ball flight with the different clubs?  When I visited Hogan a few weeks ago they told me their goal with progressive perimeter weighting and other design functions was to make a blade-looking club that a 15 handicap could play, and create a club that would create shots that pretty much all had the same basic flight apex.

Maybe too early to make any conclusions but I'd be interested in your feedback...

These look very much like the Mizuno MP32's with the cut muscle on steroids. I was wondering if they were similar if you had any experience with them. These are more of a blade with a cut muscle grafted on to it. Can you compare to the Mizuno? The Hogan, and I played Hogans for years before switching to Mizzies, but the Hogans felt "crisper" than the Mizuno. This is neither good nor bad, just different.

yes, they feel different. When I hilt the ball, I didn't feel a lot of tension in my arms. Pretty smooth action all the way through. Did not feel the ball as much as before with the 54s. Kind of like when you hit a home run; the better you connect, the less you feel the ball.

I've only taken them out once. I didn't have a problem with a miss-hits at the time, but i'm sure that will come. I'll keep your question in mind when I go out this weekend.

Barbajo: ball flight was pretty much the same on each club. I found I was getting a little more height than with the 54s I had previously used. The one exception was with the 28 degree - or six iron. The ball flight was similar. I'm anxious to get out and play with them 2-3 more times before I say much more. That said, I truly felt my first-time experience was great. I did have some concern about looking down at a club that was a bit smaller (like they say - more like a blade) than I was used to. After my first hit, that concern went away.

Rick: not familiar with the MP-32s, so I couldn't compare. I've had three sets of Mizunos, and all three had a thicker blade. And, yes, the contact was very crisp compared to my 54s.

Sounds like to me from what you have said they have built a perfectly balanced club. that may be why they do not offer the larger grips. By saying balanced club I mean overall weight and balance not swing weight
