Bogey in The Woods
So my buddy JDiddyEsquire came north from San Antono and joined me for a round at BlueBonnet Hill. I met him on the range about 25 minutes prior to out tee time. Now I am 6 ft and 220. He towered over me. So as we are warming up he takes his first few swings...... worm burners all!. No biggie, I am a 20 handicap, so I have NO room to talk. Then, the cobwebs fell off. BOOOOOOOM!!! He starts bombing them! Some straight. Some to the right. As a habitual slice master, I am very familiar with the extreme left to right ball flight. We both finish out bucket, load up in the cart and head to the first tee. At the first tee we are paired with John. Young guy, maybe mid to late 20s. Decent guy. So the front nine goes as expected. I am playing bogey and double bogey golf. Most of my tee shots are off to the right, but normally found. JDiddyEsquire is hitting em long and mildly right. John is hit and miss. Each of us are having good and bad holes. The highlight of the round for me was the 308 yard bomb off the tee slightly downhill and wind aided. But it was STILL 300+. So i will take it. It was a perfect playing of my fade off the tee. For John, probably an unbelivable approach shot on 12 from about 190 that lands on the dance floor and rolls to about 2 feet. My buddy, JdiddyEsquire: Approach shot to 15, lands short in the right greenside bunker. Ball is slightly down in the sand and 30 yards from the pin. As if Phil was in the bunker guiding him, the ball pops out, lands soft and rolls out 15 yards to fall in the cup. So we are all feeling pretty good as far as the round is going. 16 was nothing special, or horrible either. Bogeys all around if memory serves. Now we pull up to 17. Nothing special. Par 3 over water. 163 yards to green center. We are sitting on the tee box with a 4-5 mph wind in our face. For me, this hole was always an 8 iron. With the wind in my face, I clubbed up one. Swung a 7. 5 yards short of the green in the water. I step aside. Dont remember the club, John swings. Plenty long, WAAAAAY right, landing in the driving range. He steps aside and JDiddyEsquire tees up. Ball 15 yards short and wet. I step back up. One club longer. Samurai slice 30 yards right of pin and 15 short in water. John: skulls it for a three hopper across the pond, hit the rocks on the edge and take a swim. JDiddyEsquire: 25 yards OVER the green and into the driving range. I step up: at this point holding my hybrid. shank! John: pulls WAY right into the woods! JDiddy: Carries the water, over the green, over the bunker (I could keep this up for all the shots, but you dont have that much time. and my fingers are getting tired. Lets just say it seemed the golf gods were frowning upon us on 17. From initial tee shot to this point was probably 5 balls for each of us.) Finally, Jdiddy lands one just off the right edge of the green. The three of us cheer the fact that we can all finally see a shot and it isnt in the water. John and i swear that we will just drop from JDiddy's ball if the next shot wasnt playable. John skys one than comes down left side green and deep. We cheer. I finally step up with my old trusty 8 iron that I would normally use. If I am going down, I am going down swingin what I know. Launch looks good, line looks good. I am feeling good about this. Then out of Tin Cup, a small gust hits me in the face and I am getting ready to dig out a ball from my dwindling supply so i can drop at JDiddy's ball. Mine finally comes down as close to the water as it could possible be without being in the water. I am fairly sure that we all probably finished the par three with somwhere around Roy Tin Cup McAvoy's famed 13 at the US open. Needless to say no one was smiling. The only thing we could do to salvage the round was something a guy I was paired with a few months back got me to try. We all teed off at 18. Then we all teed off again: Happy Gilmore Style. I played my Happy Gilmore tee shot. John was just happy to find his. JDiddy: played his first tee shot and we all worked to come up with a good story to explain how he almost sprained his ankle to his wife while playing golf. Needless to say. I dont see us going back to Bluebonnet anytime soon. That boys and girls is why JDiddyEsquire, your Member of the Month, does not like the number 17!!!! jdiddyesquire
GRUMBLE. Honestly, Bogey has modified some facts to protect the innocent. Seriously. I think 5 balls on 17 is being generous. We were committed to getting that s*** over the water and it was so deep into our heads it's silly. I pulled the God damn 5 wood at one point and ended up in the water. Ridiculous. -Justin- @jdiddyesquire Driver - Speedline Super LS 9.5*, Matrix Red Tie 6Q3 X stiff3 Wood - Tour Edge Exotics CB4 Tour 13*, Aldila NV Protopype 80X Irons - 3-PW rac LT, KBS Tour XWedges - MP-T4, 50.6, 56.14, 60.5Putter - Odyssey White Hot Pro Rossie Bag: Daltrek Carry-Lite Stand Bag Shoes: Lunar Swingtip Suede Ball: Wilson Staff Duo
Undershooter
Thanks guys for the laugh. It was not as you but rather with you. I, as a 2 handicap at the time once topped one 5 yards off the box to start a 3 man scramble tournament earlier this year. Bad thing was, I was 3rd to go and we had to take the shot bc my partners were both left in the hazard. The group we were playing with had 2 guys who saw me shoot even par 4 days earlier and good luck promising It wasn't a fluke after that... Thanks again for the story boys. Yall bring a lot to the site. Fyi I thought bogey was only sending the story to the winner so I was pumped to see this post! Txstcatman
Haha! Oh man do I lvenplaying Bluebonet! I especially love #17! Best experience on that hole was the pare I've made but the one I almost made. Playing in a random foursome, strange Texas weather day as wind was opposite of what it usually does (little out of the north this November day). Group was playing the back tees and I think I lasered the pin to about 170-173. With the wind helping it was the first time in a while is have to club down. Normal shot would be a 6iron to clear water but not go too far past the front edge. I pull the 6 thinking I'd go 80% and get nice results. Scalped that ball so bad into the water it was ready to offer me land in New Mexico! Walk back to the bag and pull my 7, because dang it I'm getting a ball on the green! Set up looking about 10y right of the flag. Hit the most beautiful high draw that is ever been responsible for. It comes down and CLANK! hits the flagstick! Wind up 15 feet away for bogey and miss, taking a 5 on the hole. Should have gone with the guy that day. Jmikecpa
The 18th at my former club was a long par 3 over water that played 230 from the back tees. Watched enough guys in my ten years there as a member empty their ball pockets trying to get on the dance floor. Trust me, you are not alone.
