How do I get fitted for the proper Cobra Fly-Z shaft?

About a month ago I purchased a Fly-Z driver, and I am very happy with it. However, I am curious - would it be an even better club if I had one of their custom shafts, as opposed to the stock offering?

From what I can tell, you can only get the other shafts online, so how does somebody like me know which one to purchase? Shouldn't golf retailers like Golf Galaxy (I bought the Fly-Z from them) carry all of the shafts and let customers try them out to get the best fit?

If I could, and found one that worked better, I would buy it. However, I don't want to just take a chance and order one online based only on reading the specs.

Suggestions?

Like Bones said, you can pay once to get fitted properly, which is the way I recommend.

Or if you don't have a reputable fitter in the area, it takes a lot of guesswork and reading and testing. You'll be spending a lot of time and money buying stuff, trying it out, then selling them and buying something else. And this also considering you have access to a launch monitor where you can compare your data.

I was really lucky with SuperTuna's (not sure if he still visits MGS) recommendation a couple of years ago. I described my problem with spin, trajectory, miss, etc.

He suggested my current gamer. Got it cheap off the bay new. And haven't found a driver combo that is able to kick it out of the bag. I visit a lot of demo days, take my gamer with me and hit them side by side.

I know a fitting is very important, and if I could get access to some of the shafts that Cobra offers, I could do it myself!

The problem is that nobody around here has a Cobra fitting cart where I could try out their various offerings. Consequently, I'd have to buy one, try it out against the current stock shaft, and go from there.

That is far too expensive and time consuming.

Nobody around Columbus Ohio?

Ever heard of any of the following?

Muirfiled Village

The Lakes Club

BlackHawk Golf Inc Galena

All within about 20 miles of your location and all equiped with Gig Bag advanced level fitting products and professional advice. See this link for other locations:

I'm really sorry that you think this is too expensive or time consuming, but if you aren't willing to put in an effort to find a proper fitting, then you'll have to settle for wondering what could be.

Dude, if you have any doubts and I mean ANY, go get fitted. I'm having doubts about my irons lately. 98% is me - that I know. But I still have this doubt because I bought them online and I want to remove all doubt. I'm going to have to drive 2 1/2 hours to find out but if it removes all doubt, it is worth it. A proper fitter will have all the tools to tell you if you are fit or not.

Muirfield and the Lakes are private clubs, so I'm not sure if they would work with me (although if it means making money for them, maybe they would!).

Blackhawk, I believe, is a public course, so maybe I will look into that.

Thanks for the tip!

Generally speaking pro's at private clubs have deals where they can give lessons to non-members at the club at certain times or so long as it doesn't intefer with their other duties. I know because I once had a teacher who was a pro at a very exclusive club and he accommodated me there, generally on Monday when maintenance was going on. I would imagine that the same thing holds true for fittings. I'd call whichever place is closest and go from there.

Best of luck.

The obvious answer is to go get fitted.  Some places have specials if they fit more than 1 person.  One somewhat close to me was $100/person, but like $75/$80 if you brought someone with you.

However, I am a hypocrite because I have never been fitted!

What was the stock shaft?  When I got my Bio Cell, I requested the Project X shaft and there was no upcharge.

The stock shaft in the Fly-Z is a Matrix VLCT SP.

Cobra offers several other choices to "upgrade" at no cost, but Golf Galaxy didn't offer anything, except to have one of their "pros" watch my swing on the analyzer, then recommend that I downgrade from a stiff shaft to a regular, because the first few swings I took faded to the right. He said that the stock stiff shaft was causing that, and switched me to a regular.

However, I am a poor "cold" player, and had just hopped out of my car after a 25 minute drive. My normal driver swing speed is around 95 mph, and I have always played with stiff shafts. My Titleist 913 D3 has a Mitsubishi Rayon Blue Diamana stiff shaft, and it works quite well.

I echo everyone's recommendation for fitting.  I would not trust GG's "fitting"; they probably had a bunch of regular shafts and few Stiff shafts to sell.

My experience is that a stiff shaft will not be a cause to fade the ball over a regular flex.  Depending on swing speed, the opposite may be true.  I have always hit stiffer shafts straighter than shafts with more flex, but have to find the one that optimizes launch angle and distance while still hitting straight!  Good luck in your fitting, and please let us now how it goes.

Golf Etc. looks pretty cool! Plus, Jason used to work at my father's country club, so I have an "in" right there.

I'll check it out this week (although I am a little confused - they seem to have 2 locations, but I'm sure a phone call will straighten that out).

He used to be by Polaris but moved a few months to Delaware. I think he said Google still has him at Polaris for some strange reason. Definitely only one location in Delaware now.

I've never played North Star GC but I've heard it's nice (fathers CC?)

Actually, my dad is a member at Westbrook Country Club in Mansfield, which Jason lists as a place he has worked in the past.

As far as North Star, I played it years ago when it opened up, and really enjoyed the layout.
