How are you a spy?

During the day, I'm a lobbyist. At night, I'm a freelancer writer, blogger, and podcaster for several major book publishers. My freelance gig pays me two ways: either by check or by paypal. My wife know about all the checks. She does not know about any of the paypal.

 

I just ordered new wedges, a new putter grip, and a few other on course sundries using my hidden freelancing money.

 

What spy-like activities have you utilized in your golf addiction?

I used to try and pay cash as much as possible and keep all my new toys in the locker at my club.  That just became too much so now I just deal with the grief that she gives me when I go overboard, but for the most part she just lets me go and get what I "need" to feed my golf habit.

I just tell my wife I've got a box coming. I'll order her something occasionally not golf related and when she says you've got another box I tell her to open it. No need to hide stuff

Yeah, I don't really hide it. I'll let her see it and tell her its new. But, it saves me a lot of grief if the money doesn't hit the credit card or the bank accounts.

 

My wife... she is... thrifty. Except at Neiman Marcus.

No secrets required. She loves golf just as much as I do. I just got her 3 Mizuno T5 wedges with her name stamped in pink... and she loves it. Her handicap is lower than mine lol

Just marry someone with a similar consumer approach.  Neither my wife nor I like to shop, and we're rarely out to buy something new for ourselves.  In fact, when the occasion comes up for either of us, we encourage the other to go for it.  Not that we're scrooges or pennypinchers--you ought to see our monthly bills for dining out and afternoons at the Tiki Hut at the beach!

The best thing you can do is get yourself some custom head covers ie stitch, iliac, Jan Craig, etc. first thing a woman will notice is a new bag or headcover. They'll never notice a putter, irons, or wedges. As long as you keep the same headcovers you will rarely get caught.

 

Always get things shipped to the club, your work, a friends club/work, etc. never a friends house if he's married though and your wives are friends. That doesn't work. Many guys will out you and then the wife will for surely out you as well!

 

If you're shipping to your house, step up your game. That's just bush league.

Sneaky sneaky tactics happening around the world.  I just do the old "what? That.  Had it for ages babe. It's newish I guess."  My money though and my habit.

I'm not worried about the equipment spending.  I buy and sell a lot so usually it's a net-zero game.  I use paypal so it rarely hits our account.

 

I do have a credit card that I use at the course though.  Too many bar bills and questions start to arise.

The real answer for me, is that she plays too. In fact, at 7 1/2 months pregnant, she is counting the days until she can swing clubs again. So like Hula Rock, she has had a long break from play and is itching to get back out there. So much so, in fact, that she tols me last night that she wants a new bag and to go ahead and find a putter I really want.  So she totally understands.

Same here.  I met my wife on the golf course; proposed on the first tee; got married on the first tee (by a jazz musician with a mail order minister's license).  She can beat me if it is a short course, she plays well and I play crappy.  Hey!  It's happened!  And since she is 9 years younger than I am, each year the possibility of it happening increases!!

 

I do tend to buy stuff, whereas she is happy with her same old clubs from 10 years ago.  She doesn't mind, but I do get the occasional eye-roll.

Same. I make sure I'm fair though. If she's been asking for something for awhile I compromise and let her get something instead of me.

 

Edit : My wife is ready to pop with our first child any day now but a few months back she committed to learning how to play. I'm excited and hope the bug gets her too.

I told my wife the day i met her that I work to support my golf habit, and I would be getting packages from time to time with new toys. Soon after that I bought her a set of clubs and taught her to play and said she was free to join me on Saturday and Sunday mornings to play golf.

 

Now 7 years later she rarely joins me, and I still play every weekend just about. It's worked out pretty well, she has her stuff she is interested in, and occasionally joins me at the course, and only occasionally says, "Saturday...such and such date.... you can't play golf because we are .....but you can on Friday and Sunday."

Actually, I enjoy playing with her, but the funniest thing was the first time I took her I drove to where I thought my ball was, and asked her to look down and see if that was my "Pro V1". She said know. After spending a couple of minutes looking else where, I asked her if she was sure that was not my "Pro V1". She said she was positive it was not my ball, that ball said "Titliest" (Pronounced Tit-lee-ist).

 

It was the funniest thing. To this day, I always say Titliest vs Titleist.

Over the last 10 years I have really enjoyed having a wife that loves the game as much as I do.  We love to travel to play golf.  The only downside is that this already expensive habit, especially when traveling and playing nice courses, is doubly expensive!!  But it's worth it!

I play golf.....my wife (19 years next month) weaves baskets.  We each have a hobby.  If I could only get her to sell some as they are worth anywhere from $50 to $400 apiece.  She has more baskets than I have clubs....LOL

I dont have a problem at my home front.  She gets more boxes from Ann Taylor, Macy's, and Amazon Prime compared to "random" boxes I get here and there.
