Joined a Country Club

Took a "big step" in my golfing life today and joined my local country club. Beautiful place that has been open since 1921. Old school golf course that is tight with it's fair share of trouble. They've hosted some U.S. Open qualifiers which is pretty cool.

I know a grand total of two guys well that are members. One is a good friend and the other owns the local driving range that I spend arguably most of my life at.

I didn't grow up around a country club as my parents worked very hard just to give me what they could. I'm 27 years old, my girlfriend is 25 years old. We have worked hard for what we've attained to this point in our lives. I'm a fireman, she's a nurse.

My question is for guys that are members clubs or have been members of clubs. I humbly feel that we both handle ourselves well. However, I'm sure there are situations that I will encounter that I will be unfamiliar with. If you have any advice for a young "new guy", I would greatly appreciate it.

Just go with the flow and be yourself. I joined my first club at 22 and it was a bit of an adjustment for the first year. You will figure out what members (or groups of members) you get along well with and others that you really don't. It is all what you make of it and can be a rewarding experience for you and your girlfriend. I chose to not join a club when I moved to NY and now my wife and I are actively looking for a club since it is something that we want for us and our children to be involved in.

Try to not get involved in the politics as much as possible.  It will happen - hey its a club but keep it at arms length.  It has a way of killing your love of the club and game.  It's hard when you want to be involved and do as much as you can but it is possible,  Above all enjoy the hell out of it.  It is a privilege that life throws you that a lot of people never get to experience and as you say you've both worked hard to earn it! :)

Got a similar story. My advice if you are spending your hard earned money on your club, then walk to the beat of your own drum. I wear purple, pink, puma polos- colors basically. I'm young I don't care if I don't wear vineyard vines or Travis Matthew.

I am part of a club that limits itself to 500 and they get mired down on petty politics...

Suggestion is to talk with the head pro or whoever sets tee times. Find out if there are 5 or 6somes and what time they play. That way you don't get stuck behind them pulling your hair out if they don't let you play through. Happens a lot at my club. The head pro participates along with the club president, but they let me play through now.

I would say just get to know a bunch of the members, check to see if there is a group that plays regularly , and see if you can join them. Make some new friends, and have a good time. Most of the members that have been there a while will be Set in their ways, so don't go in trying to change a bunch of things, just go with the flow and have a good time.

Play Play Play...... do a few of the tourneys, hang out at the bar. Be aware that a lot of club members shun people who play with their wife all the time... be ready. Make sure your wife, if she plays, gets involved with the womens group who play together, frees up time for you to play with the guys! AGain, if your wife plays, hook up with other couples. Buy a round of drinks. Accept graciously when someone buys you a round. Hang for dinner with the couple you just plaid with. Learn to drink heavy, smoke a cigar you enjoy. Like said prior, STAY AWAY FROM POLITICS, CC's eat their own, just like churches. Simple, right?

Our local CC guys tend to be snobs.  They have their own game, and it's hard to break into it.  Don't try to force yourself in.  Be pleasant, get to know a few of them on the side, and soon you will be OK.  One guy joined the club and tried to join their gangsome right away and they shunned him.  He complained to the club pro, but the pro works for the club so he has to keep the members happy.  You may experience this or you may be welcome from the beginning.  I hope it's the latter.  Just be aware.

Best way to find a group is to talk to the starter.  When I first started at my club I would show up at 8 let the starter know I was there and ask him to find me a game.  If there is a league - join it.

Within a couple of months I was a regular in the game and by the next year I was running it.  You really only have to get paired-up a couple of times before you meet someone who takes you under their wing and introduces you around.  In the current economic climate our board of director goes out of their way to show new members around.  And its infectious.  I introduce myself to new guys as often as I can.

Anyway, best advice I can give is this:  If you want to stay at the club, make sure the Mrs. is happy at the club.  Because if she isn't happy there, you probably won't be there for long.

I'll echo what most of the others have said, find ways to meet and play with people.  Tournaments and leagues are great ways to be paired up with existing members and start forming friendships.  Another suggestion that I'll echo is to talk to the pro and/or starter.  At our club, we have at least 3 relatively large groups, with differing handicap ranges, that play together on weekends.  Our pro often introduces new members to one or more of those groups in order to help them make new friends.  The last thing, allow yourself some time after you play to relax and have a beverage (alcoholic or not) or a meal with your playing partners, to allow the friendship you've started a better change to grow.  One more last thing, play by the rules, post your scores, make your handicap accurate, get a reputation as an honest player from the start.

Usually, there is already a Saturday and Sunday game.  You just have to inquire at the Pro Shop and they will let you know.  I was a member of a private CC back in the 1980's while living in Louisiana. I was also a member of a club in the 2000....until the club closed.   Now I am a memeber of a public course, that also gives memebrs discounts in the Pro shop and the Pub. As members of both private and public, there are advantages to both.  Just enjoy your time while you are there.  If they have some social activities, enjoy them with your GF.

My brother-in-law is a member of a men's only club here in Houston. It's not something I would want to join due to $$$ but the overall makeup of the club is fairly typical. The whiter the hair, the more opinionated the member. Find a group of guys around your age group that just like to go out and enjoy golf. Most guys in their late 20's/early 30's are still in the 'wealth accumulation' mode so there won't be the big $$$ games the guys closer to retirement get involved in. I agree with others to stay out of the politics and stay away from the severely opinionated members. They will ruin it for you. Become friends with the right people (pro, starter and someone in the restaurant). Make it a point to know their name and their background. Invest in the people that will be serving you and they will be gold throughout your membership. Most of all, enjoy it!

Great suggestions.  Especially about participating in all club events at first.  This should hopefully lead to a couple of invites to join one of the 'groups'.  The others in the group will be more accepting of an invited member than a pro or starter plug-in.  Ditto on making sure the wife is getting accustomed and accepted as well (there can often be a lot more politics on the women's side).  As a new member, be especially diligent on your self-enforcement of the rules and not rolling balls and improving lies.  Until you get a feel for general customs, you don't want to risk being 'labeled.'   Finally, respect the staff, both pro shop and dining.  Once they see you are good folks, it can make things a lot more enjoyable.

We are in similar boats.  Every club is different.  If it helps I've made sure that I treat the guys that handle my bag, the guys in the clubhouse and the dining staff well. No one gets tipped at my club until Christmas, we are assessed at that point for a staff gift and any food or drink has an automatic 18 percent built in. But I'm polite and chat.  I've also joined in on the regular Friday game so I'm starting to meet folks there.  My wife doesn't play but she and Penny have been there to eat a couple of times and everyone loves Penny. :)

I've been away for a couple of weeks so it will be interesting to see if I'm missed when I'm back tomorrow.

If your experience is anything like mine you're going to love it - I love the idea that when I call my clubs are out of the range waiting for me along with a pyramid of balls.

Enjoy it!  Thanks to for putting your life on the line for we civilians.  You and your wife are awesome for serving.

I've been thinking about joining a private course recently. There's only one in town and way out of my price point at this point. I'll say this about my salary: the tv business pays you squat when you start out. I'm looking forward to the day when I can afford one and be able to join a group of golfers like myself and play in the tournaments and outings more. That's what I miss most sometimes about playing on a public course.

Thought about starting a social club at your public course there's usually other guys like yourself hanging out for a game just need USGA affiliation for handicaps and go for it.

Or you could start a weekly points game. No member dues, just a $20 game, with pins and skins. You could withhold $4 each week from each player and bank it toward a semi annual tourney. We started out with about 12 guys and now we average over 40 each week. We meet after every semi annual two day tourney and allow members to change the rules by majority vote. Currently, we average the stableford points by taking the top 5 out of the last 10 rounds. When we started we only paid 3 places but as we grew we changed and now we pay 5 places every Saturday with the winner getting over $100. All the stats are kept on an excel worksheet file. We now have 5 members on the Board who work to register and compute and payout each week.

I am actually looking into joining a local Country Club/Golf Club. Played there a little while back, right after all the rain. Want to play one more time once they have had a good chance to groom the course. Looking forward to becoming a part of the "good guys" that are at the club. Met a few of the less desirable members when I was there. But there was a lot of alcohol involved on their part. So looking to see if my next visit is better. If so, my wife really wants me to get a membership and join. We shall see.

Not sure if this is the norm but every CC I've played, maybe 4 or 5 of them, seems like it was designed to accommodate old old dudes. They are short and straight. Always in immaculate condition but don't seem like courses I would like to play regularly. Would get too boring,

Hey!  Watch who you're calling an old, old dude!  :)

With that said... this is exactly why I don't belong to an expensive, immaculate CC.  I play our CC here about 4-5 times a year.  It's OK, but it's not where I want to spend all my time.  My wife and I like to travel around Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and Canada by car.  We also take golf trips to AZ, CA, HI, and FL during the winter months.  By not belonging to an expensive CC, we can afford to do more traveling.  If I added it up, I probably pay more in travel and golf costs than I would paying for annual CC dues, but I get to see a lot of courses!

I joined my first CC last year at a special "new member" rate, knew a couple of people I enjoy playing with, terrific practice area and overall the course and the golf experience was great.  Seldom lost a ball, as the rough was a little higher than the fairway, but not excessively so and I could easily carry the water hazards and bunkers were consistent and good quality sand.

CC has a restaurant and bar, but no pool.

Didn't stay a member this year, as it's about 1/2 the price to play a local muni.  Rough is tougher, greens are inconsistent, bunkers are flooded right now and fairways are tighter, more hazards and lost golf balls.

Social aspect, for me is about the same.  I usually play solo, get know a few folks on the course for casual rounds, so there's no difference in that aspect for me.

Muni has a grill and sells beer, but no pool, either.

I can play at a lower handicap at the CC, but I'll become a better golfer playing the muni - lol

And I'm a Old Dude ;)  (Heck, before I retired, my ID badge at work actually said "Old Dude." - lol)

The practice areas are much much better at CC's, that is for sure. Almost would make it worth it. Although I bet if I just showed up at the one near my home and started chipping around no one would say boo. Maybe I'll try that out.

Yeah but you're not an old, old dude!

There wasn't enough space on the name badge, for that!

You have to ask kfilly.  He started it.  I was just pretty sure that he was talking about me!  ;)

I'd have to say if you're retired and you didn't retire early because you're rich you are old old. No offense, but I was saying I'd rather not play a course designed for guys hitting it 210 with their driver.

Gotten my butt handed to me by "old" guys enough time to know age is nothing but a number haha.

But I get what he meant by course layout; flat, 300yd par 4s, 400yd par 5s. But you still got to get the ball in the hole regardless.
