Should have said no as he's a piece oh shite as a person in general. But anyways I let him borrow them. I go pick them up yesterday and he's like "Oh, I played pretty well but I owe you a few balls." No big deal I say thinking it might be 3 or 4 ... I go look in my bag and he probably lost 12-15 brand new ProV1X's. Now thats like $50 or more.

 

There is also crap all over my clubs, mud grass, sand etc .... Maybe I'm a bit anal about keeping my clubs in good condition but still. Bad move on his part. 

 

On a side note I'm also raising his 12 y.o. son because he can't find the time even though he gets off of work at 3 pm everyday.

A few years back I had a buddy of mine who was in town and came to play my course, but didn't have his clubs. I let him use mine. He's not a great golfer but playing professional baseball, a pretty good athlete and he was a casual golfer playing about 20 rounds a year. He calls head covers "hats for bats" like Pedro Cerrano from Major League.

Anyway, I see him pull up to the halfway house and there's not a headcover on a single club. I go out there and I'm looking at the clubs. I said "hey where are the head covers?" He replied "oh am I supposed to leave those on the whole time? I thought they were just for decoration!" I just stood there . He said he threw em in the basket because he didn't want to lose them 🙈

Woods, hybrid, and putter had dings in them that I wouldn't have put on them in 10 years of normal play. I said hey how do you like the clubs? He said he loved em and was looking for new ones. Told him he could have mine for a great price! Went back inside and ordered myself a new set.

Never made that mistake again!

Doesn't seem to matter who they are, but people that borrow your stuff never seem to hold in as high regard as you do.  My sons are the apple of my eye and do they respect my clubs the way I do - no.

I'm still struggling with the 12 year old thing. What's up with that? We have a 17 year gap between our oldest and youngest and I could never imagine asking one of my kids to raise their sister. If I died or became disabled but healthy, working, no way.

I made that mistake too. Once. I loaned a "friend" my 5i because his was broken and he had a tournament coming up the next day. When he returned it I noticed a gouge on the sole and inquired. He said sorry but that he was hitting a shot next to a cart path and accidentally hit the concrete. He did offer to replace it but I turned it down. I have several other older set and I should have given him one of those. What was I thinking? Lesson learned.

I do not loan my set of clubs. I did once and got away with it, but now I've invested too much time money and expense to keep them in their condition and keep them from getting damaged. Go rent some from the golf shop.

In hindsight I think I'm most annoyed with him losing $50 in balls and just giving a half assed "oops".

People know better than to ask me if they can borrow my clubs.  My brother asked me to borrow them for a golf outing one time and I flat out told him, "no".  The last thing I need is drama with family because one of them put a ding in the crown of one of my woods.

I have gone on business trips to Albuquerque where I didn't think I was going to get to play golf on the weekend.  I had a buddy that lived there and we had a chance to play so I borrowed a spare set of clubs from him, but I NEVER used any balls from his bag.  I thought it was an unwritten rule that you were responsible for the balls you use.  I always buy a sleeve at the pro shop.  That way I get to play the ball I am most familiar with.

I've done it before. But, I would never call that "playing pretty well."

Well, I've lost more than 10 balls per round... it's really not that hard

But of course, my balls, I paid for them...

There are about 3-4 buddies that I trust to borrow my clubs, that is basically it.  I know how they play and how they take care of their clubs...plus they will replace anything damaged - as will I if I borrowed theirs.

I bought a new driver several years ago, and this guy I know at the club asked if he could try it.  I knew he was not a very good player, but I have played with him a few times.  He usually hit a really bad tee shot about 1 out of 5 times.  I really didn't want to let him take a swing, but I did.  I guess it was that 20% swing, because he put a sky mark on the club.  I don't do that anymore unless I know the player is better than me, which means I don't have to loan out clubs because anyone better than me wouldn't want to hit clubs with my specs anyway!!  

 

The one exception to this is my wife.  She can't beat me... yet!  But she has a better swing than I do.  She borrows my FW frequently, but it's old and scratched up so it doesn't matter anyway.

At at near 14 handicap, I can ding and dirty my own clubs up well enough on my own - lol

 

Depending on my schedule, I don't always get my clubs cleaned up after a round, although if I were playing "borrowed clubs," I'd make damn sure I did.

 

I'd be PO'd more about the golf balls, as long as the clubs weren't actually damaged, at which point we'd have a serious issue if they didn't mention it and offer to make it good.

I always have a spare set for friends and relatives BUT I still suggest calling and renting a set :-) Of course I always keep a few dozen shag balls in the spare set just so they have a little bit of weight to carry... err I mean so they have enough balls!!!!
