Golfwrx Blade Review

I'm wondering if anyone got the chuckle out of this that I did....I've always found comparing heads of different lofts on different shafts to be of limited usefulness. They also included a weird mix of club, they didn't have anything from Ping or TMG which I think is a problem because it's hard for people to know how different heads might compare without a reference to something they've hit before.

I actually appreciate the test and its results, it's something at least.  From looking at the clubs side by side I'd love to take the Cobras for a spin.  Generally speaking I stay with GI irons even though I'm a lower handicapper, it's one less thing for me to worry about and it makes it much easier to keep my game up to speed when I'm not playing as much.

I think it's always important to recognize that any test provides a starting point.  They have the data available for anyone who wants to draw additional conclusions in regards to the clubs and their suitability for his or her game.

Every test has its limitations except the one that you do for yourself - then the limitation is the one that you will have to play with for real over the life of the club(s) that you select.

I can appreciate they TRIED. Former college players, and teaching pros will have a much different view than me: Average Joe Golfer. I agree that the choices of clubs were odd. Throw in some rec golfers to that testing data and I bet the results in rankings change.

I understand the difficulty in getting a test with the same shaft in all irons....but the same loft would not be that difficult, as these clubs can be adjusted by a professional....and the Hogan can be ordered for any loft...To me that would be the starting point.

That said, it looks like the the Japanese stole the show.

A lot of folks like these sort of "tests" because they appeal to their feel-good factor if they've bought into a brand for whatever reason. JDM enthusiasts are usually right up there when it comes to reeling off countless reasons why you should be playing a particular club, but as everyone else has pointed out - it's only the opinion of a few. Do we really need to know the opinion of a 58 year old? Well, I guess they have an opinion like everyone else, but that doesn't mean we should be hanging on every word they say about a particular club.

A much better way of getting an unbalanced review of how a particular club performs is (surprise, surprise) to go out and demo them yourself. Unfortunately, this is where most folks usually turn around and say "there's no demos near me - I don't want to travel that far - I want this but don't want that - etc".

Not surprising either given that most of the target audience hail from the land that invented the drive-thru consumer experience.

I can forgive any reviews that give the consumer some sort of informed opinion of how some looks, is finished, or the options (including baseline specs), but this sort of head-to-head "test" is nothing more than a bad case of self-indulgence on the part of the editorial. No change there then.

They didn't use the stock shafts in a lot of the irons.  For example, the Hogan iron.  Their stock shaft is the KBS Tour V.

Have a ton of back-ups in all categories, but there are always 14 clubs in the bag that differ depending on the course and set-up. Bomb and gouge. Yes, I'm a club gigolo.

I would LOVE for them to mythbust the "blades make you a better golfer"

Do a test with scratch, low teens, low 20's, and low 30 handicappers.

One go around with blades and one go around with some GI irons.

Get some launch monitor data, do some impact tape data, etc.

Then post it for the masses!

I would as well. In the end though folks are going to buy what fits their eye. My preference is to find what works and let it fit my eye later. After a year I still hate walking past my bag and seeing there. But I love the ball in the air with them and I know exactly what to expect and when playing well how to get it.

@jankaski what's wrong with 58 year olds? We still have a little game left on the bone old boy. Give us some respect! :)

The one major take away from this test for me was carry distances. High 150's with a 7. These were all good players and that was their average with that club. No accusations, just my periodic plea to be true to thine own self about the distance though actually hittest the ball.

Did anybody notice player 5's handicap was n/a and is a current teaching pro? What kind of teaching pro DOESN'T keep track of his/her handicap?

I can appreciate the test though. Like Rev said, it is something at least. The only thing I find annoying is when these sites (MGS included) do these tests and people keep saying they should do a test with all the heads using the same shaft? All these companies offer their stock shafts for a reason. Lofts the same thing. These are all stock and should be tested as offered by said company (with the exception of the Hogan iron) . I'm only assuming here but I would think that all these companies would have tested their irons with all types of shafts and determined that whichever shaft performed best overall becomes the stock shaft. If you want to try a head with your favorite shaft, got to a fitter.

Im a Class A PGA Professional and haven't kept a handicap since college. What's the point? Only events I play in score gross only.

Exactly, my question would be what class A keeps a handicap? Regardless of that the points were all take in Mbrodeur's post.

BTW in regards to handicaps I saw the ones from our club in the locker room the other day. There are several on the 1-2 range, strong young players. Mine is in a lower group but there is a player with a last name of L that is +3.8. Anyone care to guess who she is? I'm betting she doesn't turn in all of her scores. :)

Agreed- many valid points except that one.

I'm figure she'd be lower- must not enter all her tournament scores! Lowest I ever got to was a +2.7 and that was back when I had zero responsibilities. I'll never get that low again.

I'm wondering where they came up with the Chikara irons?  Seriously?

Those are just not easy to find, let alone demo.

I know I live out in the boondocks, but if I'm willing to travel 4 hours I can demo Vega, Mirua, Hogan, Edel, etc. and unless you're a bit of an equipment geek, you may not even be familiar with the names (other than Hogan, and there's still a LOT of folks that don't know there's a New Hogan available).

The review is worth whatever it is to you, but I suspect it's only relevant to a very small group.

Brittany is a plus 3.8 but only enters scores when she's playing at home, not on tour.  That means she's only entering scores from Bayou or Bardmoor, she's playing the tips on those courses and both are 7,000 plus from there - so much for those of us who are going to wax an LPGA player.

Hogan has a stock shaft so why not include them? Heck when we were doing our Hogan Fit profiles, I looked and didn't even see the dynamic gold as an option.
