Do you have pet names for things like holed bunker shots?

Here in the land of Drop Bears, Grogans, and Giant hopping rodents (marsupials actually ;) ) when we play for side bets in our matches we have pet names for things like holed bunker shots, holed putts from off the green etc.  A holed bunker shot is called a "sandy ferret" and is also worth 2 bits.  A holed putt or chip in from off the green is called a "ferret" and is worth one bit.  A bit in our Wednesday club is worth 20 cents in my regular club can be worth up to $50.  A ball that hits a tree and then hits a green or fairway is called a branchy.  A ball hit onto the green using a 1 - 4 iron is called a Hogan in honour of the long iron that Ben hit at Merion in the US Open.

So 20 cent bits  branchies, Hogan's what pet names do you have in your matches?

We don't have any pet names for shots like that ( as far as I know), but I have several pet names for some of my bad shots. I just can't print them here.

Well i really only have one unusual name I use (in public, anyway). A birdie (in my opinion) is a nicely played hole where you actually put the ball in the cup a stroke under par.

However, an Oozlefinch is a hole where your tee shot was an abomination. Your approach shot was a joke. Your chip or putt was an example of everything wrong with your swing in one shot. Yet you still manage to sink the ball a stroke shy of par.

oozlefinch 2x.jpg

The oozlefinch actually came from my Army time. At NO time is it considered a compliment.

In informal rounds, a birdie that follows a mulligan off the tee is known as a "dirty birdie."

We also play Foley's and Callahan's.  Call a Foley on your playing partner and you're betting he'll 3 putt.  The stake is a dollar and you can't refuse a Foley.

Call a Callahan on your playing partner and you're betting he won't get up and down.  You can refuse a Callahan, and you can negotiate odds.  If you both agree on 5 to 1, if you don't get up and down you owe a buck, if you do get up and down you win 5.  Won $30 off one of my reps a few of years ago due to a series of ill-advised Callahan's, some shrewd negotiating and plenty of short game practice...

We play "chippys" if you chip in for birdie or par it's worth .25, "sandys" if you save par from a bunker.

A buddy of mine earlier this year went bunker to bunker. Left greenside bunker to right greenside bunker. Then holed out from the right greenside bunker to save par. I couldn't come up with a word for it other than bull****.

A "Skippy" is where you skip the ball off the water and still make Par.  A "Barky" is when you bounce it off a tree and still make Par.  A "Sandy" is a par out of the bunker.  A "Poley" is when you make a putt longer than the Flagstick.......all are worth a Dot in our game and we call them Garbage Dots.  Of course a Birdie gets a dot as well.   In one game the dot is a quarter and in another it's 1/2 dollar....just depends who I am playing with.

Let's say you play a hole and everything from tee to green is just bad. But, somehow you still manage to make par or better. That's called; Whip cream on horseS%it.

One other one in our group. We have a guy who's last name is Rhode. He's very long off the tee and can reach several par 4's in one which he often proceeds to par.

So any time you three putt for par it's called a Rhode Par.

We also have several places on the course we've named after guys in our group. Let's just say it's places they end up frequently and they aren't where you want to be.

We have a few places like that on our course such as "Up near Harry's Tree" - not a good place to be and Harry is up there a lot!  We also have a lake that has to be hit over on our 15th hole which is a 150 yard par 3 and the Lake is called "Lake Johnson" after a poor unfortunate that hits a lot of balls in there.  When I first joined the club I played with an older veteran of the club who complained bitterly about how his mates had named the lake after him and now all he did was hit balls in the bloody lake.  It was pretty funny hearing him tell the story.

I prefer cherry on top of horse---- but it's the same.

Also any putt that hits the edge of a hole and doesn't go in is a prom ball. Why? Because just like my prom, the ball got got all lip and no hole.
