Cally XR - Fly Z - Aeroburner

My range session got rained out tonight so I decided to head over to Dick's to look around.  Launch monitor was open, which is rare, so decided to swing some clubs.  For kicks I grabbed the Aeroburner, Cally XR and per Mizuno_Lover's thread, the FlyZ.  Keep in mind, I am not a pro golfer!  I have a high spin rate, which I HATE.  I didn't record every shot, just took a mental snap shot of everything and the numbers below are the general average I noticed for each club.

TaylorMade Aeroburner:

10.5* - Stock Stiff.

Club Speed: 107

Ball Speed: 154

I could make this easy and just say how much I hated this driver, but I will explain why just to justify my reasoning.  First off, I skied the first 3 shots, which might reflect my swing, but when I looked at the driver there were more signs of wear on the crown than the face, so apparently everyone else had this issue as well!  This club had ZERO forgiveness for me.  I was blown away by the numbers I was seeing...218, 225, 235...a long of 255. Just felt horrible.  I actually saw a spin rate in the 5000s...not one shot did I hit and get excited to see the results.

Cally XR:

10.5* - Stock Stiff

Club Speed: 105

Ball speed 153

I gamed the BBA last year and just wasn't for me.  Loved the RazrFit series so not against Cally drivers by any means.  The club felt good and had decent results.  Spin rate was around 2500, which for me isn't too bad, and my drives hovered in the 250 mark, with a long of 274.  I liked it, but wouldn't buy it.

Cobra FlyZ:

10.5* - Stock Stiff

Club Speed: 105

Ball Speed: 153

Hands down the winner and it wasn't even close.  It was by far the most forgiving and longest.  You didn't get punished for slight mishits...at all really.  My longest drive was right at 299, with several 280s and 270s.  I remember 1 shot that I hit off the toe and felt flat, it went 271 and was just slightly off line.  I actually saw a spin rate around 1600....most were in the 2500 range.  I would own this club in a heartbeat.  It screamed confidence and exploded off the face.

So take what you will from this.  I hit my R15 really well and while I am not a great driver, I was somewhat happy with what I saw.  I was really shocked by my hatred for the Aeroburner...I mean I REALLY hated it.  I was equally shocked by my FlyZ love, it was a great driver and is probably one of the best drivers I have ever hit.  It just had that wow factor on my shots.  As you can see, I am not super consistent.  Hell I hit drives anywhere from 200-300 yards, had a spin rate from 1600-5000...but I don't feel like I swung any different with any of these drivers.  So if my swing gets me a 2500 spin rate and 280 yard average from 1 club and 225 and 4000 spin rate from another, that just show which club fit me better.

Well that's all well and good, but let's get to the really important stuff... What color was it? :)

Wow Hayzee (excuse my murder of your handle it's an Aussie habit) what amazing numbers to come back with.  Where would we be without modern technology to confirm what our hands arms and brains are telling us anyway   Equally interesting for me was how we can just intuitively hate something like you describe above.  I have had similar experiences with Titleist Drivers and I think go figure.  They are a well respected brand and have superb quality in their equipment but I just can't hit them.

As soon as I can afford a Fly Z I'm buying one maybe even before I can afford it such was the impact hitting it had on me.  Thankfully my club Pro has said I am Welcome to use his Demo club whenever I play but it's not the same as owning it ;)

Thanks for sharing your experience it put a smile on my face :)

I want a cobra fly z in the iridescent earth color! Haven't tried one though. I have been too busy bombing my R15.

I had the similar blah attitude of the Aeroburner, but it had to do with the really light and long shaft and it being a "stiff."

Titleist drivers just haven't wowed me, except the 910d2- the best sounding feeling driver I have had (until I found my R15)

I agree on the AeroBurner. It was way to long and the shaft was too light.  This is even more shocking because I really like my R15!  Thought they might be similar but not at all!

I can't quit thinking about that FlyZ.  I don't NEED one....but....

I hit the r15, bba dbd, flyz, Titleist 915 and for me it was a tie between the cally and the r15. The fly z was not good for me as well as the 915.
