Unboxing/Initial Impressions

I haven't been so excited for a pair of golf shoes in a long time! I ordered these shoes sight unseen after seeing pictures of them online and also on Tour Coverage. I have no idea why, but the whole “volt” campaign sucked me in. My initial impression is that they are going to be extremely light and comfortable shoes that provide fantastic traction. I have no idea what they are made of, but it is definitely not leather. I've had mesh shoes and leather shoes, never whatever this shoes is made of though. I like the design and hope that they are easy to keep clean and hold up for a while!

The Official Review

INTRO

Being in my early 30's, Nike has always been an athletic shoe and apparel powerhouse for my entire generation. Even though they have always had competition, it looks as though they finally have some serious competition with Under Armour. When Nike first entered the golf market, my first pair of Nike golf shoes can be seen above. Oh baby! The Tiger Woods shoes! They were ugly as sin, uncomfortable as heck, and didn't match a thing. The spikes separated from the soles and the shoe may have lasted me a couple months. Pissed off I swore them off and went back to FootJoy. Fast forward about a decade and I found myself wearing the Air TW 2009 shoes pictured below. Boy I absolutely loved them! Until the air pocket broke after a month and they squeaked every step I took. I swore off anything Nike (except soft goods) and was furious. Fast forward another five plus years and here I am again… The Volt got me!

Fit

Unfortunately I wear a size 14 shoe. Nobody makes 13.5 or 14.5 so you're either stuck with 14's or 15's- take it or leave it. Not many golf stores aside from PGA SuperStore carry 14's in any model on hand and to be honest with you, I don't blame them. For me the Nike shoes fit very similar to Pumas. I feel that Adidas are the narrowest and shortest and FootJoys are by far the widest. The fit of these Nike's is very good for me, but not quite perfect. An Adidas 14W or FootJoy 14C fits me the best. These Nike Lunar Control's are a 14 medium and that works okay.

Fit Score: (75 out of 100)

Traction/Performance

I was fortunate to be able to wear these shoes in extreme wet conditions and also very dry conditions. I wore them for 2 rounds riding in a cart (one being cart path only) and three rounds walking (two of which were the equivalent of 9.5 miles each).

  • Waterproofing in these shoes were fantastic- zero problems with leaking
  • Breathability of the LC3's leaves a little to be desired, feet weren't sweating heaps, but enough to notice in hot and humid weather.
  • Traction was fantastic, zero slippage traversing steep slopes and hills and also great traction while swinging in deep grass or soft, wet conditions.
  • Every time I played, I had to tie my shoes multiple times. I prefer boa tech or waxed laces.
  • It looks as though a couple of the spikes are already missing prongs, that's not good.

Traction/Performance Score: (90 out of 100)

Looks

  • For me this color scheme just flat out does it; however, I do wish I would have gone with just the white/black as opposed to the volt.
  • The material used for the shoes is pretty unique and has a sheen to it, no idea what it is.
  • The toe is very nice, not pointed but not quite square.
  • The laces loop into some strings which I thought were some type of support structure, but they're just strings so… kind of false advertising eh?
  • I would have given them a 99 out of 100, but I can't stand this weird toe spike thing, it bothers me at address; and that is why I give them a 90.
  • These shoes clean up very well! I clean them after every round or practice session. There will be two pictures showing what they look like after a round and then after a cleanup.
  • I feel that these shoes look just as good as most others in this niche. I also like that they have multiple color combinations that you can chose from. Pick one or pick them all!

Looks Score: (90 out of 100)

LC3 toe.JPG

Comfort

  • Perfectly comfortable right out of the box.
  • I thought they were incredibly light in comparison to my other pairs of golf shoes (LC3's weigh 1 lb 2oz per shoe and FJ Icon's weigh 1 lb 8oz per shoe)
  • Extremely comfortable throughout the round, even on rough terrain and long walks
  • For me these feel best when I tie them rather tightly, unfortunately that makes me have to retie them multiple times.
  • The sole flexes well when walking up hills and bends well when crouching.
  • Highly recommend cedar shoe trees to maintain form in all golf shoes and I've done that with these. They still look almost new after multiple rounds in all extremes.

Comfort Score: (95 out of 100)

Likelihood of Purchase (LOP)

MAP Pricing on these is about $175, so that puts them out of most people's budgets for golf shoes. IMO There isn't a whole lot of tech involved with these shoes to put them over the $100 mark. If this shoe was $100 I would recommend them over any other shoe on the market.

LOP Score: (75 out of 100)

Conclusion

The Nike Lunar Control 3's are quality designed golf shoes that offer outstanding performance and comfort. How long they hold up would be the only determining factor on whether or not they would be a good value for their premium price.

Total Score: (85 out of 100)

Nice review apprenti23,  Lot of pictures really helps.  As owner of 2 pair of TW shoes, I fully understand the shoelace issue.  I am constantly re-tying mine as well.

Great review! Just a couple of questions...

1. How long have you owned them/ rounds played?

2. And have you played the lunar 2s? They are 1/2 the price and calling my name

Thanks!

1- I've used them for five rounds- three walking and two riding. Two of the walking rounds were at Erin hills and one being on an 85* day with high humidity.

2- I have not worn the LC2's but many have said they are the least comfortable golf shoes they've ever owned. I would pass. Maybe try Lunar Commands if these are out of your budget?

I have those exact shoes. Just in blue and white, so not the exact. Either way I really really like them. They are sturdy without being heavy, are very comfortable, keep my feet dry in the dew and the rain and keep them cool in the heat. I'm sure there are nicer golf shoes out there, but I can't imagine them being better enough to justify spending more than I did on these.

Well that makes me kind of sad- the comfort or lack thereof. I am just looking for more color's without paying out the wood work.

I'm currently using the Adidas Pure360's that were $250, but they feel like I am walking on sunshine so haven't regretted the purchase. I think I will look into getting a white pair. I saw they were 2nd for most wanted traditional shoe a couple of months after purchase.

I think Adidas does too but Nike for sure doesnt

I did testing for boa a while back right when the FJ dna came out and they let us choose between a Adidas FJ or Nike to try the new boa with. I should've done the Nike but I chose FJ dna, anyways that's why I wondered if Nike had it for this one maybe they only did it for that test
