westy
So my good friend emigrated a few months ago to California, he and I have held handicaps that are very similar for the last 10 years. His official U.S. Handicap has now arrived after he's played the requisite number of rounds..... +0.6 Right he's my mate, he's never been below 6 in the UK! What's going on over there? How's he going to play to that? To be fair I know it'll balance quickly, but it is strange he can't just bring his handicap across. Kenny B
A quote from Dean Knuth, the Pope of Slope: "There can be no conversion factor that will make USGA Handicaps and CONGU handicaps comparable. The two systems are far too disparate to make that possible." Here is his article on this disparity. http://www.popeofslope.com/scotland/usscothandicaps.html Of course, maybe he took some lessons... “We don’t stop playing the game because we get old; we get old because we stop playing the game.”

westy
Mind you read the article now and let's be fair he is hardly neutral. Our system ain't great, improvements are needed but changing things does take a while. I know my friend isn't good enough to play off +0.6 though - at least in the U.S. He can go up quickly, in England it'd take ages. Kenny B
I have found courses that I didn't think were rated accurately. I am a 9.4 right now, but fluctuate monthly between 9 and 10 depending on how many rounds I play. There is one course in my area that I can play and easily shoot my HCP. That shouldn't happen on a properly rated course. If I wanted to lower my HCP I would play that course all the time and I would likely be a 7! Question westy... does he play the same course all the time? If those 20 scores came from one course, that can bias a HCP. “We don’t stop playing the game because we get old; we get old because we stop playing the game.”

apprenti23
Like previously stated, the two systems are entirely different- much more difficult to get close to 0 on your side of the pond. He must be one heck of a stick though!
westy
I think the systems are more comparable than some might think, over time his average will sort itself out. We frequently see people get handicaps early on they struggle with, but in our system it can take ages to balance out - I reckon the US system will correct much faster. Kor.A.Door
I'm just a bit curious, how does the hcp system work over there? How does a guy have a European hcp of 6, come over here and go to +0.6. Are his scores different here? I mean if My scoring average is a 78 here, and then go over there and average 78, isn't my hcp going to be similar? Or I will it be drastically different like your friends? Lefties are always in their Right Mind

westy
The article is quite accurate, but a little biased. Your handicaps are based on an average of your best 10 of 20 rounds, with that average taking slope into account. (Simplified I know). In the congu system once you have a starting handicap which you get after putting in 3 cards - system works out your potential from them....it's usually wrong. When you shoot a score under the CSS (competition scratch score - which is the courses rated score altered based on the scores of the day. CSS can be up to 2 lower and 3 higher than the courses rated score, the SSS) then for every shot under you come down 0.1, 0.2, 0.3 or 0.4 ( so if your 5 and below its 0.1, 6 to 12 it's 0.2, 13 to 18 it's 0.3 and 19 and above its 0.4). If you shoot outside of your buffer zone (the CSS plus 1, 2, 3 or 4 - once again dependent on you playing handicap) then you go up 0.1. When you try and explain it you realise how over complex and daft the congu system is! Time we took the U.S. System I think. mizuno_lover
When we went to the slope system here in Australia they (Golf Australia) were supposed to rerate every course in Australia. They didn't and the end result is courses that are a push over are rated way too high and vice versa. We get guys getting 2 and 3 extra shots when playing a course that is so easy it's a joke and trying to compete with them is just plain bollocks. They are supposed to have fixing the problem on their agenda but it is a massive task and I can't see anything happening soon My Bag Driver: G25 Stiff shaft3 Wood: JPX 850 16 degree.
