Only playing 13 clubs, want a 14th. What would you get?

My bag goes (with distances according to Game Golf)

Driver - 280

3W - 260

4 Hybrid - 230

5i - 210

6i - 200

7i - 175

8i - 155

9i - 145

PW 45* - 135

GW 50* - 120

SW 56* - 100

LW 60* - 80

Putter

So I want to put a 14th club in my bag. So far I'm leaning towards a 5W with a higher loft or another wedge. Probably a 52* with a low bounce like an 8 as the 50 I have has an 11*.

What would you do? Or any opinions?

Judging by your yardage gaps I would say a 6.5 iron. Have you gotten your lofts checked lately?

That was my first thought too. Second- that 20yard between 7 and 8i. That being said a 2i for the wind and punch shots ;)

My thoughts too.  I find it really unusual to have only 10 yards difference between 8-9, but 20 between 7-8, and 25 between 6-7.   I would consider getting them adjusted to even out the gaps.

The driving iron is a good idea as an option off the tee.  Myself, I really only need 13 clubs, but I put in my "desert club" for any shot where I don't want to hit my i20's or SCORs.  For me its a forged 5-iron Macgregor blade.  I can hit a punch shot which works well out of the desert and if I have a decent lie, I can more easily shape shots R2L or L2R than my Pings.

I don't strike the ball r enough to have "true gaps" meaning, I hit my 4H 230 ish, but that means if I hit it on the nose its going 245 if I miss it even a bit its going 210. Same with most all my clubs. My 7i will go anywhere from 165 to 200 depending on how well I strike it. I haven't had my gaps or lofts tested ever, probably should. I have played maybe 6 rounds with my new irons, so I'm still figuring out the distances on those.

The only real issue I can think of on the course with distances is when I'm around 220 and I know if I hit my hybrid well its going way over and if I hit my 5 its probably going to come up 10 yards short. This is where a 5H lofted up would be nice. I don't know. Maybe I should get my lofts and gaps tested first.

Kenny - I was thinking about a "dessert" club also. Just something i can hack out of the crap if necessary, probably a 3 iron or so.

Lofts are jacked for sure- you should get em tweaked to fix your extreme gapping issue! What boggles me is that you hit 5 iron 210 but a 45* pitching wedge only 135???? 1+1 doesn't equal 2. If my PW were 45* I'd prob hit it 150-155.

I think I attribute that to not going 100% on my wedges, going for aim over distance. I should probably do that with every club though.

Might be a good idea to do gap test using a launch monitor where you can get averages for each club and throw away bad shots.

Game golf is good but it's not perfect. It doesn't account for elevation and wind and whatnot and averages can be skewed if you don't have a ton of data in for each club. A launch monitor would give you a good baseline to go off.

That makes sense. I'll have to do that soon. I really appreciate the tips and advice. I'm kind of stuck in my scoring right now, looking for ways to push myself over that hump and into single digits. Getting some fairly reliable gaps would help. As would having the right clubs.

Just because the "rules" allow 14 clubs doesn't mean carry 14. I only carry 12 clubs including my putter. My home course is an old design and short. From the back tee it's only 6560 yds. With these 12 clubs I can easily play courses up to about 6900-7000 yds. Perhaps putting in a 4i? Like others have commented; I'd go have your lofts checked/adjusted. And while you're at it have the lie checked/adjusted. Lie IMO is critical.

My Sun Mountain bag currently includes:   TWGTLogo2.png.06c802075f4d211691d88895b3f34b75.png 771CSI 5i - PW and TWGTLogo2.png.06c802075f4d211691d88895b3f34b75.png PFC Micro Tour-c 52°, 56°, 60 wedges

Just got lie adjusted actually. Went up 1 degree. Only played 2 rounds since, but I think I might want to go back in and make sure they  are where they need to be. I don't "need" 14, in reality I could probably get by pretty easily with like 7 or 8 but if the rules say i can have 14 I want 14 just in case I need that 14th some time.

I'll go get my lofts and lie checked out and go from there I guess. In my mind my options are

1. Something for around 240

2. Another wedge, with a lower bounce

3. A crap club to hit out of the rocks and stuff when needed

4. A low iron like a 3 for whenever its needed

Choices ... choices ....

Agreed. I hit my weak lofted pw 135-140 and I only carry a 5i 195-205 depending on the swing I take and what I'm trying to do with it.

Kfliffy you may want to get on a launch monitor and look at your carry distances. Also you should definitely get the lofts checked. Mine were jacked up all over the place on my last 2 sets of irons.

I think I attribute that to not going 100% on my wedges, going for aim over distance. I should probably do that with every club though.

Well here's your answer. I go for center face contact at about 80% and that 80% is my absolutely MAX I will swing. That's how you achieve consistent distance control. Very rare occasion to swing more than 80% on ANY shot, ever.

I'm sure your Lofts are fine, but sounds like LOFT may be holding you back!

Quit being so damn logical! I do need to work on a consistent swing. Generally when I pull out the 5 or 6 I'm a ways out and am going hard at the ball. When I pull out the 8,9 or wedge I'm going for the pin not for distance. I've got different swings for different clubs. Rookie mistake.

Maybe I'll just get the 64* PM grind just for the hell of it.

Like PlaidJacket, I only play with 13. I found that 4 wedges was too much and I never used the 60*, so I bent my wedges from 4* to 5* between each and called it good. I've looked for something else to put in, but gaps are good and I can't really justify stuffing another club in there just cause.
