Regripping an old Ping Anser

Recommended Posts

So I played in a charity tournament this morning with a buddy and two of his friends. At the end of the round, the one guy asks me if I'll regrip his putter. I say sure, no problem. He decides he wants a grip like mine (midsize SuperStroke) and throws his putter in my bag. He doesn't play very often so there's no rush. I get home and pull the putter out and this is what he's got:

I've only been playing a few years so my knowledge on older stuff is pretty limited. I don't know how old it is or if it's worth anything or what. I'm sure some of you guys know and can tell me. I just can't in good conscience cut the grip off this thing and slap a SuperStroke on it. If anything, I'd put a new Ping old style grip on that would be similar to the one on it now but again, I don't even know if I should mess with it. Any information or advice on it would be appreciated as always.

It's a Ping Anser - and there's around 1million out there exactly like it. Which means they are pretty cheap. Not that it's a bad thing - on the contrary it's one of the best putters ever made.

I can't really condone gripping it with a SuperStroke (because I hate them) - the original Pingman grip is still one the best putter grips ever made too. Even though this one looks a bit hard and cracked, I'd replace it with a new one and enjoy the putter as is.

Thanks Jas. I'll put a new Pingman grip on it for him. Just wouldn't look right with anything else.

I was looking at the zip code on the one you posted and if I saw correctly it is a common Ping Anser. It would not detract from the value if you put the Super Stroke on it if that is what the guy wants. Depending on the size of the SS grip it could throw the balance off overall because of the weight of the respective grip. I do not have my books handy but I believe most stock Ping man grips weigh more than a SS. But let him try the SS if he does not like it put him a stock Ping Man grip on it later
