Found a drill on youtube that saved my swing.

Recommended Posts

My irons have been god awful as of late. Everything going right. So I get my lie adjusted. Then everything starts slicing way right. Try to keep my arms together, swing smoother, go inside out. Nothing is working. So I'm scanning youtube and come across a teaching video.

I don't even remember what ailment they were trying to cure, but the drill they showed was to hold a golfball in your right armpit and hold it there during the swing. After slicing a few shots at the range I decide I'll try it. IMMEDIATELY my swing is smooth, my shots are straight, and I'm getting consistent height and distance. Granted it kind of hurts squeezing a golf ball in your armpit but it seriously worked wonders for my swing. It feels so smooth, I'm making such consistent solid contact, the ball is going where I want it.

If you suck at golf and shouldn't definitely give it a shot next time you're at the range.

I bet I know what it is. You're keeping that trail arm bent and tucked to your side (somewhat) coming to impact. Forcing your hands forward. Is that right?

Could be. I do know I do a few things.

1. My right arm disconnects and that makes me come outside in resulting in slices and pulls

2. I tend to lean back instead of bringing my weight thru

3. I swing to damn hard

Whatever this drill is supposed to fix it it fixes. I'm not going to ask questions. I'm just going to do it and have a sore armpit and straight shots.

I meant to say earlier... "you're not keeping the trail arm bent"  Anyway... I like your ball/armpit thing. Whatever works.

I found a good video that discussed generating power from the hips and turn. I'm not flexible at all so this has always been a problem for me. Really focused on this on the range and damn, gained 15-20 yards easy on every club. Was hitting everything straighter. I'm going to have some issues in the next few rounds re figuring out my distances.

  • 1 month later...

The golf ball drill (I actually use tees) is a great way to feel that right arm pinned to your upper body at impact.  I never try and hit full shots with this drill, because eventually you will have to lose pressure in the armpit, but for short wedge shots and chips (my favorite to use this drill with), it is a great feeling to have!
