Playing with Players worse than you...

What are your opinions on playing with guys or girls who aren't as good as you? I do not like using that terminology but the truth is I seem to play worse when playing with golfers who aren't up to your level.

Example: I had my handicap at it's lowest ever at 6.7 I played a round with my 2 brothers ( who play around 13-15 handicaps) and after 4 straight rounds in the 70's I shoot an 86 and then an 82 and handicap back up to 7.2. I have NOT been putting well at all this season. My putting is actually costing me a lot of strokes. I've given up on my putter and am getting a new one.

What happens at our local course, not many guys that I know have a handicap at that level. There are certainly better golfers than me but I just don't know them plus I don't want to hurt my brother's feelings by playing with someone else.

What do you think?

I LOVE playing with people who are ecstatic with a par, happy with a bogey, and routinely struggle to break 100.

I HATE playing with people who think they are playing in the PGA Championship every round and act like every shot is for a million dollars and get pissed if they're not even or better.

I just enjoy golfing with people who like to play golf. Hell, I don't even keep score anymore. Figure it all out after the round. Rather not be consumed with all that anymore.

Great post!

The ones that drive me nuts are the ones like my f-i-l. A "good" round is if he breaks 110. So he hits more bad shots than good. But he'll slam his club down saying he can't believe it when he mis-hits something. What's not to believe? It's a bigger surprise when a good shot comes off his club.... Takes so long hunting for lost balls, which he picked up on the course to begin with I get nervous. All on top of the inherent slow play that accompanies 110 plus shots, it puts me on edge and I play worse. I hate seeing people wait on our group while he obliviously takes forever. It's exhausting.

Amen to that. Playing with two guys tomorrow in upstate NY that aren't the best but a heck of a good time and a blast to spend five hours with.

This from the guy who routinely shoots 68 ;)

I agree though. I really enjoy playing with people who are better than me but most of my rounds are with two of my good buddies. We all have a similar sense of humor and are dicks to each other. Neither are as good as me (one is a 6-8 with a lot of upside and the other a 12-15). We have a great time (although an outsider would think we hated each other). Even if I play bad I at least want to have some guys out there I enjoy playing with.

Just don't let someone else's play affect your game. I know that isn't always easy.

4 short years ago I was the guy that had literally never played golf before. I was lucky if the ball even got off the ground. Everyone that I played with was better than me and most of the time I was embarassed with myself.

If those guys didn't take the time to let me play with them, I wouldn't be where I am now and I probably wouldn't even be playing golf. I was straight up horrible, but I took pride in the fact that I wouldn't hold anyone up. I wouldn't waste time looking for balls and if my shot only went 20 yards I'd pick up and play from my partner's ball.

Now I play with guys that are scratch and I have a similar feeling and I also play with guys that shoot 110 and feel that way playing with me.

I tend to play better when I play with better players but I enjoy playing with almost anyone. I'll always remember where I came from.

I second this! Can get uncomfortable with the 2hcp I play with every now and then who yells every time he makes a mistake, the few he makes are accompanied with, "im so mad i can spit! !!". Some of the rowdy rounds have been with people who play 6 rounds a year!

I definitely play towards the level of the guys I'm playing with. I play with my brother often, he's around an 18. I always shoot high 80's with him. I have a buddy who's scratch and I'm pushing 80 everytime. It's just hard to focus when you're watching someone struggle. It's still fun and I'll play with anyone but I prefer the challenge of trying to keep up with someone better than me.

Yep, I'll play with anyone an time almost any place.  I do tend to play a bit better when I'm playing with golfers around my ability or  better but I'd rather play with people who enjoy their golf and are not Prima Donnas.

For those who feel they are lousy golfers and feel that better golfers are thinking what the hell are you doing - RELAX!  For the most part the better golfer is wondering what they are doing wrong in their swing and really don't give a toss what you are doing unless you are keeping the group waiting or having a hissy fit about your golf.  Good golfers tend to care bout their game and that's it! Apart from being polite and acknowledging your odd good shot they are absorbed in their own game so don't sweat it. ;)

I will echo much of what's said here, I enjoy playing with people regardless of their ability. If you let someone else's play effect yours that's on you, not them. There are lots of fun games that a "better" player can have with a higher handicapper or just use the caps if you want to have a friendly wager.

One of my favorite rounds of golf ever was playing with a guy from my church in a league. We had five man teams, four played matches each week and normally we were paired by handicap. This week we weren't so I was a 2, my partner a 23. He had been a much better player once but had Parkinson's and it made life tough. Shaking and all he shot 41!!!! I was so lost in his great play that I was shocked to discover that I shot 34. One of my favorite evenings offf golf ever.

My regular weekly foursome consists of:

Me  @ 17

#2 @ 14(Senior)

#3 @ 9(Senior)

#4 @  7

We play a robin with a dot game each week using the handicap system to determine each holes winner.  When I win a hole with a stroke "I Love the Handicap System"

So I am the worse golfer in the group. Because we play with handicaps, I don't think anybody(Me) drags anybody down.

The other side to this is do high handicaps play worse plying with a low index? When I started playing in my normal game at my club there were a lot of guys that did not want to play with me solely based on my index. Some were afraid that they would mess my game up and some were afraid I was a low index d!ck. Once word got out that I was actually fun to play with it all went away and people relaxed and now it is just fun. Things I normally do when playing with higher handicaps to make them at ease are hit last off the first tee, try and play the same tees as the rest of my group (for fun I am not playing the tips when they are playing the white tees), and compliment good shots in the group. The last thing I want to do is ruin someone's day on the course over anxiety that is baseless.

Isn't the whole point of golf and its handicapping system that anyone can play it, together, at the same time and have fun?

Yup. Simply playing with someone who takes more shots than me is never a problem in itself. But it sucks playing with someone who is always pissed off about their bad shots and takes FOREVER to play. And if you're not having fun because your group is holding the course up, it affects your game, mine anyway......

What do you think?

What's more important to you.....your brother or your handicap?

Families these days are SO spread out it takes effort just to see them a few times a year let alone play golf with them.

Don't take for granted the blessing you have of being able to play with your brothers on a regular basis.  I would gladly double....no....triple....my handicap to play weekly with my brother.

There's not a lot I can add without repeating. I play most weekends with the same guys. There are usually about 12-16 players. Pretty competitive stuff. Fun. I sometimes sorta look forward to the official end of season around my club. During the winter I start playing with a some other people (men & women) and have a relaxed fun time. It's a real mixed bag of playing ability. It's enjoyable in it's own way and keeps me grounded in what the game is really about.

Played a round this morning with some old high school/college buddies, celebrating one of their birthdays. Tougher course that they've never played- 74.2/143 and one guy struggled and shot low to mid 90's, the other struggled and high 80's low 90's, and the other played about average and shot low/mid 80's. For some reason they love playing with me- I'm the type of guy who can have a full conversation while addressing and hitting a shot, talk in my back swing, etc. I don't care. Maybe that's why... Anyway, I show up and they already had bloody mary's and bags of beer... for our 7:20am tee time.

I will say, however, they forced me into making a 10 on a par five today! Totally their fault  :P Par five, total dog leg left, forced carry over water for the tee shot and then up the entire left side of the hole. They kept telling me that I don't hit it far anymore and I couldn't reach this one bunker. I love a good bet! 1 in two out, three. Three in, four out, five. Five in, six out, Seven. Seven through the fairway (over the bunker) Eight on, two putts for a TEN! One guy actually said "Nice birdie, dude."  I started dying and I said, actually I had a ten. hahahahaha

Nah, I absolutely love playing with my brothers. Never got a chance to play with my dad because I only fell in love with the game after he passed away.

My point or the question I was asking was do you feel playing with somebody who is better or worse than you affects your game?

I really hated posting this because it really makes me look like a golf snob and that's certainly not my intention. I would gladly play with anyone anytime. I consider it a blessing if I can play with someone who loves the game as much as I do

My foursome today had a 6 playing like a six, a 13 playing like a 24, a 17 playing like a 14 and an 18 playing like a 20.  We had a fantastic time, the jokes and repartee were free flowing.

Nonchalant putts count the same as chalant putts.

Most people get caught up in the round and what everyone else is doing and let it influence themselves and their games. If your playing with people who aren't as good as you and you still want to score then play sidegames against yourself or something to distract from others play.

I went to the course by myself a lot this summer. Played with a bunch of randoms. Some good, some bad, some horrendous. Had fun every time and met some cool people. Played MUCH better when the people I was playing with were good though.

It doesnt really bother me.  I can play with good players or not so good players and it has no effect on me.  Honestly, Im so focused on my own game that I dont even think about what other players are doing.

Good bad better worse, the guy I hate playing with is the one that plays slow. I don't care if you're better or worse than I am and it generally doesn't effect me. But grind the pace to a crawl and I am irritable and play worse. Put me with better players at a good pace and I usually play better. But grind that pace from 4 hours or less to 4.5-6 hours and I'm scoring higher and am all kinds of mad about it.

Have a ton of back-ups in all categories, but there are always 14 clubs in the bag that differ depending on the course and set-up. Bomb and gouge. Yes, I'm a club gigolo.

I prefer playing with people better than me (not that hard really) because it lifts my game and I shoot better.

Florida in February is a good example. I played a round with my FIL, Uncle and a friend that all shoot in the mid 80's most times and the youngest is nearly 20 years older than me. I had the lowest score on the front 9 but then the wheels fell off, but I still shot a 90.

Last week I played with my usual golf partner (72, back broken 4 times, used to be scratch but is now about the same as me) and I shot a 105! Haven't seen 90 this season in Ohio.

So, you could see where my preference lies, but I enjoy playing with Sonny.

Naw..... I understood what you meant. I have the same issue most of the time.

I play with my brother every Sunday. He is in his third year of playing. I have a good time playing with him, even though I tend to play "looser" and not care as much. Most of the guys I play with aren't in my skill level (that sounds wrong, but I don't know how else to put it), and I don't think I'm really a very good player...lol.

Even though I didn't understand the point of your original post I most certainly did not think you were being a gold snob.

Like Plaid Jacket I have a competitive season and a non competitive one. It's eay enough to sort that out. I'm certainly a better player when I'm more focused but it's tough to be focused all the time so who's to say it's bad when my handicap fluctuates up a bit because I'm out of competitive season? My concern always is having fun, so long as I'm having fun I'm happy on the golf course regardless of the playing ability of the people around me. It mighty nagativeky affect my play a bit if they are playing slow causing us to hold a group behind us up. I will sometimes take overly long give me's or even pick up to move things along.

Late to the party on this one guys. Haven't had much time to read your posts, but this is a good one. Moms home from the hospital and doing OK following her stroke on Sunday.

My practice course is a haven for not so good players. It's cheap, short, and easy as long as you are in the fairway. I rarely play with anyone better than I am. Once in awhile I will play with the pro, and on this course we are pretty even. He hits the ball further than I do, but it's neck and neck on the short game. If I have a good round and he has an average round, I can beat him. He gets me on the longer holes. I did have the 9-hole course record at 31 on a par 35 for 3 years until some high school kid played there one day and shot 29.

Most of the people I play with are a lot worse than I am but I love playing with most of them. I tend to play to the level of my playing companions. I want to beat the pro!! But when I play with friends, I really don't care what I shoot; it's a fun time. A couple of my buddies play very well when they play with me; a lot better than when they play with equals. So, I would say you tend to step up to the level of competition.

I don't like slow play, but I also don't like to feel that I have to rush either. Either one will ruin my round. If I can play at a nice steady pace, I am happy and usually score well. My wife is a good player at 18 HCP at age 59, and we play fairly quickly. She played 9-holes by herself yesterday in 56 minutes. When we travel, we will play with anyone the starter puts us with. My wife can make friends with anyone and we usually have a good time. However ther are times when we get stuck with some guys that don't care to play with a woman. That usually goes away after the first hole or two when my wife beats them and we are waiting for them on every shot!! We played with a single once who met us on the first tee and the first words out of his mouth was: "I hate women.!" I would put $20 on my wife to beat him straight up! As long as people play at a reasonable pace, I'm OK with it.

I hope one of these days I can hook up with some of you guys, and we can play. I hope you can put up with us!!!

We don’t stop playing the game because we get old; we get old because we stop playing the game.”
