Charles Haley Talks Golf on Football HOF Ceremony

Former San Francisco 49ers and Dallas Cowboys defensive end Charles Haley was inducted into the Pro Football hall of Fame on Saturday evening in Canton, Ohio. Typically speaking, most Hall of Fame speeches begin with thanking God and the family, followed with a joke or two and then going into teammates and coaches, mentors and heroes.

 

It is almost always the same routine, and while the speeches are deserved, they come off as snoozefests. That was until Haley got to the podium. After being introduced by Eddie DeBartolo Jr., the former owner of the 49ers, Haley stepped to the microphone and told a story of when he played for San Francisco and DeBartolo took him golfing at Pebble Beach.

Haley went on to say he doesn’t golf, but he was put in charge of driving the cart around. Haley, unaware that you are not supposed to drive onto the green, did so multiple times while course officials winced. Finally, DeBartolo told Haley he could not drive onto the green. This was his response:
