Snell My Tour Ball Forum Review -
Team Vardon

Welcome to "Team Vardon" and its reviews of the My Tour Ball from Snell Golf.

Since we had 12 testers, we figured it would be best to split the reviews up into three groups.  And in the spirit of "The Greatest Game Ever Played," we went with Team Vardon, Team Ray and Team Ouimet (obviously the sentimental favorite!)

Our boys will start off with their initial impressions of the ball, followed by their full review of the ball afterwards. As always, please make sure to ask our testers and questions you'd like about the ball and their experiences. And as you've come to expect with MyGolfSpy, these reviews will be honest and #Datacratic!

Go get 'em guys!!!

My first review for MGS...my initial impressions.

I honestly couldn't wait to receive these balls because of what a lot of you have said about them. As luck would have it, I had to work the night they arrived but my son opened the outer box for me.

I actually like the understated packaging that the balls come in. Not flashy like a lot of others, doesn't scream look at me and really doesn't have to.

Balls look quite nice but I have to agree with others that the logo could be a bit smaller but overall it's not distracting, at least to me. Other than that, I do like the red numbers as opposed to most brands black. Don't know why, but I think it looks better.

The balls feel pretty much like any others in the hand ie: hard and round!  :D

Well, I'm looking forward to the performance side of this review...but that will come later, so here are some pics.

Well, here it is, I was pretty excited about being picked to review the Snell MTB because of what a lot of you here have said about the ball...and you weren't wrong!

My first time out playing the ball side by side with my usual ball, the Bridgestone B330-RXS and I have to say on that day, it was longer. About 10-15 yards longer.

The B330 is near the base of the tree and I'm standing right on top of the MTB looking backward.

20151024_080419_zpsmluovrui.jpg

Here's the same photo zoomed in a bit.

20151024_080425_zpszlrhybgh.jpg

That was impressive, but it actually got better. The shots with full wedges on this day were something I've always wished I could do, 1 hop and stop. The B330-RXS is meant to be a spin ball around the greens, but it doesn't hold a candle to the MTB.

MTB from about 100 yards out with a 46° SCOR wedge.

20151024_085139_zpsc8kwjcuz.jpg

Same shot, same club with the B330-RXS.

20151024_085146_zpsfihaxxut.jpg

Another wedge into the green with the MTB.

20151024_081351_zps8vcjsqse.jpg

On hole 10 the same day, again, I'm standing on top of the Snell looking back toward the B330-RXS, just to the right of the rear wheel of the cart.

20151024_082114_zpsotarfj8c.jpg

Putting wise, the first time I putted with them they felt "clicky" which I'm not a fan of, but, I believe that was my putting stroke. Today, they felt softer off the putter and rolled really well.

These balls have got my attention! And I dare say, have given me more confidence on the course. I think my scores have reflected that with the last 3 times out playing the MTB I have shot an 84, then a best ever 82 and this morning an 87.

Playing these last couple of weeks with the ball has convinced me to use what I have left of the Bridgestones and then convert over to the MTB as the ball to use for the foreseeable future.

Thanks again to MGS and Snell for the opportunity to do the testing...do yourself a favour and buy buy these balls.

Hello MGS!

So I received my Snell golf balls and could hardly wait to get a chance to get them to the course but that is for the next post. In checking out the packaging I would have to say that the look was decent enough but not "over-the-top". The arrangement of the packaging is pretty standard - 4 sleeves with 3 balls each with the Snell & "My Tour Ball" logos on each. I like the look of the Snell ball but if I were allowed to change one thing I would make the logo on the ball just slightly smaller, other than that the ball has a nice look. For me like many of you, looks of the packaging or the ball are not so important if the ball performs well. I am looking forward to giving the Snell My Tour Ball a tour of my local golf course and letting you guys know all about it.

Hello MGS world!!

Snell My Tour Ball - Real deal or All hype?? I will have to confess my 1st impressions of the performance had me leaning more toward the hype conclusion but the more I used this ball the better I liked it. My most recent gamer has been the Bridgestone B330RX and it is my opinion that the Snell ball is every bit as good as the Bridgestone ball & seems to have an even softer feel around the green. I really, really like the way this ball reacts on and around the green!

IMG_0532.JPG

For my 1st interaction with this ball I took it out and walked 9 holes and it seemed ok, it didn't really blow me away but then it wasn't terrible either. A few days later I took the time one afternoon after work to really focus on the ball performance. Since it was late afternoon during a weekday the course was pretty close to empty. I went directly to the 10th hole which is a 340 yard par 4 (from the white tees) and found the 100 yard marker. I made shots from the 100, backed up and hit shots from 150 and then finally hit shots from the tee. The ball had a nice feel off of the club face and the ball flight remained the same as what I was used to. I did notice the shots seemed to be coming up 3 to 5 yards short of what I was used to but to be fair it was a pretty windy day. I finished off my "tests" with some green-side bunker shots, chipping & putting (did I mention that I love the feel of this ball around the green?)

IMG_0530.JPG

IMG_0523.JPG

IMG_0521.JPG

I finally had a chance to go out and play a full 18 holes and on a day that was not so windy. Let me just say that my initial concern about this ball not measuring up on distance was eliminated quickly! I hit some tee shots  that matched some of my best ever - admittedly still not great by some of your standards but that has more to do with my limited ability than the ball performance. My conclusion is that the Snell My Tour Ball is everything the company claims it to be, not everyone will love it but it is my honest belief that it is worthy of anyone giving it a chance.

I was a little late joining the testing group, so I had to wait a little longer for my package.  The packaging wasn't fancy, but if we're using these balls, we're doing it BECAUSE they're not fancy, right?  The balls were shipped in a very sturdy outer box, with the typical dozen ball box and sleeves inside.

The boxes the testers received were perhaps a bit bigger than normal, as Snell was nice enough to send us a very cool (and extremely comfortable) hat with our golf balls.  That all sais, your balls should reach you in perfect condition based on the packaging.

Once I had them open, my first thought was to examine the ball and compare the initial feel to the other balls that I'm used to playing/using.  The Snell My Tour Ball has the same feel in the hand as a high quality ball that you're used to.  The ball has the slightly waxy feel of a good urethane cover, not the slippery feel of a harder (surlyn) ball.  Others have noted the size of the logo as a detriment, but that doesn't bother me particularly.  The only time it might be a distraction is while hitting a second (or third, or fourth, or fifth LOL) shot, so it's really a small point.

I've played several holes with the ball already, so I'll have more notes for y'all soon!  Stay tuned!!

After I received my Snell My Tour Ball, I set out on a two part testing regimen.  I played a nine hole par three course here in South Carolina, using the MTB alongside my regular ball, the Bridgestone Tour B330.  Then, I played an 18 hole regular round in Texas alongside a friend of mine who doubles as my teaching pro.

My game is coming around after about a year of scuffling pretty badly and not playing nearly as much as I'd like.  My handicap has scooted up to almost 17, but it's slowly sliding back down.  I'm playing Mizuno JPX-825 irons, about 18 mos old, and fairly new Cleveland 588 RTX wedges.

My initial reaction playing the MTB is that it felt harder than I was anticipating.  During the nine hole round, I hit every club from four hybrid to 58 degree wedge, including many shots around the green.  The course was a bit busy ahead of me, so I spent a long time on the second green just putting the ball from various locations.  Off the putter face there is a very metallic "click" (I'm putting with a Mati Mamo, which is a milled 303 stainless steel head) and a hard feedback to the hands.  Not what I associate with a tour style ball.

Ball flight and carry distance were virtually identical off the irons.  The hard feel still was a concern, however.  The feedback through the club to the hands is harsh.  That's the only way I can describe it.  Around the greens I also noticed a considerable difference between the "known" B330 and the My Tour Ball.  Even when clipped well with a 54 or 58 degree wedge the ball didn't seem to check like a soft cover ball, but rather rolled out pretty significantly, more as a hard cover ball might do.

So, even though my initial impressions weren't favorable, I thought a different day in a different city (state!) on a different course could produce different results.  (I know it works wonders with my golf game, just not always in a positive way...)

I got very lucky both days I played.  Clear skies, good conditions, not a ton of wind.  Seemingly good days to test a golf ball.  My 18 hole round was my first opportunity to play the My Tour Ball with the Driver, fairway woods, etc.  I knew what I was anticipating based on my earlier experiences with the irons, but didn't mention to my playing partner what I was doing, just played a normal game.  The ball is quite long off the Driver.  I picked up approximately ten yards, but I am not 100% sure how much was carry and how much may have been roll.  However, as with the irons, the feedback at impact isn't friendly.

A couple shots stick out:  I hit an 8-iron from the tee, downhill to a large green, about 155 yards.  I really struck the ball well; one of the few times I really didn't get a ton of negative feel from the ball.  The shot landed about 5 feet short of the flag, and proceeded to roll uphill about twenty feet.  Now, I'm not Phil Mickelson, but I wasn't impressed to have a 15 footer downhill after that shot.  Ugh.

Finally, I told my playing partner what I was doing, described the ball, and asked him if he wanted to try it.  He's a golfer, he of course said "Sure!".  I did not tell him anything about my impressions up to that point.

This guy is a 1.7 index, hits the driver a legit 310, and can spin a can of tomato paste.  I wanted to know if I was crazy, or what was really up.  Off the driver, he reported what I already knew:  you get a harsh feedback.  We were playing a par five, so he had a long-mid iron left to the green.  Upon impact?  "Oh My God!", and not in a good way.  His initial impression was that the shot felt like he had hit a Top Flight.  Not a rousing review...

As much as I wanted to be impressed by the Snell My Tour Ball, I'm unfortunately anything but.  Based on my results, I know it's not the ball for me.  I just never felt that I was playing a ball that was comparable to a ProV1, Taylor Made Preferred, Bridgestone B330, etc.  The feel and playability just were not there as I played the ball.  I'm not ready to go so far as to compare the ball to a Top Flight, but perhaps to some other two piece balls such as a Titleist DT?  I know many of you have played the ball and liked it, and results may vary; give it a shot, just don't expect tour quality performance without tour quality prices.  As they say:  "If it seems too good to be true..."

"Where'd it go?"  "Right in the Lumberyard..."

This is my first review for MGS and I have to say I was truly excited to be selected to test out these golf balls... especially after reading MGS' review of them and the comparison of these (amongst other "no-name" golf balls) against the big boys.

That said, here are my first impressions (*Warning* brutal honesty):

1. I don't love the name "Snell" or the logo.  Unlike most premium golf balls, the logo seems large on the ball itself.  That and the font used make me think "cheap" at first...

2.  While I totally appreciate the thought, the hat that came with the package was ugly and I'll certainly never wear it.  I dislike the hat b/c it's made a an odd material (semi-mesh), has white contrast stitching (never looks good) and again, the logo is ugly IMHO.

3.  The packaging is similar to all other golf ball companies (4 sleeves side-by-side) so nothing good nor bad there.

4.  The ball feels amazing in my hands.  Feels extremely soft (the urethane cover) and indistinguishable from two other premium balls in my bag (Pro V1x and TM Lethal).

5.  The dimple patterns of all three balls are slightly different... I believe they have been patented, which would make sense.  It remains to be seen what affect that will have on the actual performance of the ball.

6.  Nothing about this ball has led me to believe that it will not perform at the level of other premium tour balls.  I would feel confident putting this in play without even knowing how it performs.

Not a fan of the logo on the ball either. If I were Dean I'd change that asap. Also I'd package them like MG does. 12 balls in a box with no sleeves. Who needs a sleeve? The balls will not suffer any wear. Sleeves are immediate trash. We already know the Snell balls are premium. Less packaging = lower price = sell more = more profit for Dean = remain in business. :-)

Nice first Impressions, all.

I agree with Plaid,  if your selling by the dozen, you don't need the cost of 3 ball sleeves.

Matt F or anyone else with an opinion,

Maybe I missed this in your review and I'm too lazy to go back and read it, but how was the green side spin for you? Like 30 yards and in and green side chips? I am one that struggles with spin on these shots anyway and while trying the My Tour Ball, it left me wanting more.

For me, I think it's better than the B330, I think.

I say that because my technique for those shots is not good and I have roll out, sometimes a lot of roll out. But, it doesn't seem to be as bad with the MTB as it is with the B330.

I will have to say I agree with MattF, I thought this ball performed well on and around the green!

Today, I will do what others will not so that...

Tomorrow, I will do what others can not

In my testing, it seemed no matter what I did, I could not spin the MTB as I often can a ProV, etc, ESPECIALLY around the green. As others have noted, everyone's technique is different. Your experience may vary from mine.
